tired of Zoom in my room. I want to see you all and talk to you in person. Watch out, I’m a hugger like my folks, and I’ve been Zooming for a year.

I got my vaccine. Have you?

Last month in this space, Levi presented a great treatise on how science and government came together so quickly to produce effective and safe vaccines in what seems to be record time — but how they're actually built on decades of study and preparation. I am going to give you the other side, the emotional argument on why getting vaccinated is the right thing to do. I cannot describe how happy I am to be vaccinated. It has been a long year. Apart from the fear of death and debilitating sickness, I’ve missed being among all the people that I value in my life, doing the things that I love, and experiencing life. You have a family and I have a family, so let’s start with them. I hugged my mom and dad the other day for the first time in 12 months. It felt so good. My folks are huggers. They are also elderly, and they did the hardest thing last March: They quarantined themselves so they could stay alive. In a word, not hugging their five kids or their 10 grandkids or their dozens of friends for a year was hell . And it was on the rest of us, too. Late last March, Levi and I decided that one of us should exit the corporate office. As the top two executives, we wanted to make sure one of us would survive the pandemic to run the company. That may sound dramatic, but in March 2020, it was smart and reasonable, and we’d do it again if we had to. I’m older, so I set up a home office and have existed largely on Zoom. True confession: I have spent many a day in meetings on Zoom wearing my Zoom shirt and gym shorts. I have barely been out to our stores, lumberyards, or design centers in a year. I can say emphatically that I am really sick and

I want to go to a concert and a baseball game, and I want to see someone get married. We missed about a

dozen weddings last year, either canceled, eloped, or postponed due to COVID-19. Knowing me like I do, I would have been complaining about going to another wedding pretty early in the season, but I darned sure would rather go to a wedding than be forced to stay at home. I had tickets to the Avett Brothers last summer and had plans to enjoy baseball in Seattle — both canceled. I am sick of this disease and what it has canceled. The vaccine is my ticket to getting my life back. I’ve done my research. I’ve reached my opinion on the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine. I took the jab. It was free. It was easy. We have lined up resources for you to do the work, if you aren’t already convinced. Finding and signing up for a vaccine is not difficult. This disease is not over. We do not yet have the numbers of people vaccinated or with the antibodies to make COVID-19 disappear. 2021 is not a safe year yet. I’m not going to be happy until I see a baseball stadium filled with people sitting side by side, eating popcorn, and catching foul balls. I want to see the capacity crowd at the United Center sing the National Anthem at the top of their lungs. I want to sit around a big table with my big family and laugh and share a meal. I long for spending time with you, doing the important things we do together, for our customers and for each other. The vaccine is our key to all of this. I’m convinced. Join me, won’t you?

Many of our locations and departments had outstanding years measured in financial results. Seven locations set all-time sales records, and 17 departments did the same. Seven locations and 19 departments broke their records for gross profit dollars. One location and seven departments turned in best net income percent in history. The one location with record profit percentage was McCall. General Manager Ben Thomas will be the first to give all the credit to his team, which is appropriate because he does have a stellar crew. By any measure, McCall’s year was one for the ages. They led the company in working toward a zero-injury culture. The year’s sales were 23.9% above budget. The gross profit from those sales was in elite status among all locations and 32.5% above budget. Net income percent led the company at 13.8% and the net income dollars produced by McCall were 96.3% better than budget. Whew! Right alongside McCall in the amazing department is our other mountain store, situated in a section of Bellevue called Poverty Flats. General Manager Art Hazelbush and his partner in leadership, CSR Scott “Lumpy” Lovell, ran a fast ship all year long. Hardest hit early by the pandemic, including our only location impacted by a government shutdown of construction activities, the “dirty dozen” of Bellevue turned in sales that were 20.2% higher than budget, gross profit at 39.5% higher than budget, and a net income percent of 10.7% and profit dollars a whopping 170.8% higher than budget. They did all of this without a DART injury. This proves that there is magic in our Idaho mountains! In all, there were six locations with 2020 net income over the BHAG of 10%. In addition to McCall and Bellevue, they are Boise Truss (13.7%), Elko (13.4%), Jerome Truss (13.2%), and Fruitland (11.5%). Congratulations to all these fabulous teams.

SPOTLIGHT ON BRIAN TUCKER Who Innovates the Innovators?

That efficiency makes it easier for Brian and his fellow employee- owners to make sure they’re providing the best customer experience we can, and that’s a satisfying feeling for him. “My favorite part of my job is being able to provide fast and efficient service to customers and coworkers,” he says, before adding, “always with a little humor and a smile.” Some days, that could mean applying Lean principles to their processes or helping a coworker with a problem. “On others,” Brian says, “it might just be catching a problem with a tile order and fixing it before it goes out.” On his days off, Brian enjoys some well-earned time with his girlfriend (Rachel), his son (David), and his stepson (Jayden) as well as visiting his daughter (Brittany) and grandson (Alex). “I also love any time I can spend in the mountains, doing home improvements on my house, and fishing,” he says. He also sponsors and assists with the Mini Street Stock Division #4 at Meridian Speedway! Thanks for all of your work, Brian. And thanks to our readers for tuning in for this month’s spotlight. It’d be fair to say that Brian Tucker has worn a few different hats during his nine and a half years as an employee-owner at Franklin Building Supply. “I spent

many of those years up at our McCall location, specifically in the door shop,” Brian recalls. “A few years after leaving that position as a production lead, I ended up

moving my family down to Boise.”

Some integral things happened for him once they fully settled in the Treasure Valley. “I came on as a warehouse lead at the Design Innovations Center — also known as the 'ultimate showroom floor' for the many products our company stocks and carries.” It was a new hat, but the changes weren’t over yet. Brian says, “In the three years since I came back on with the company, most of the procedures that were in place when I started have been reviewed — and often revised or condensed” to make sure everything is as efficient and Lean as possible.
