Don’t Give Up

We Know Resolutions Can Be Tough, but So Can You!

Did you make a resolution this year? New Year’s resolutions offer us a chance to make positive changes and additions to our lives. Many are related directly to health, like running daily or taking better care of your teeth — one that Gardens Dental Care sees a lot! Others might be more social, such as learning a new language or picking up a sport. And some people decide to start saving for retirement or set up plans to pay off debt. But after a few weeks, it gets harder to stay on track with those goals. The excitement wears off, and the size of the resolution sets in. By February, sticking to that resolution can get difficult — with some people giving up altogether.

Which is why I’m here to tell you that you can do it.

Just as the “beginning”mindset was helpful but temporary, the “reality setting in” that happens in February is also temporary. It’s the first of many setbacks you may encounter on your way to the goal you set. But the discouragement you might feel is just that — a feeling. And it will go away, especially if you keep working. Failure might happen all at once, but success is incremental. It might not seem like much is happening in the moment until you look back and see how far you’ve come. The topic of goals and resolutions is close to home with me because for the past few years I’ve been pursuing a goal of my own: becoming licensed to practice sedation dentistry in the state of Florida. I’d held a license in another state, but Florida has its own regulations and requirements. And I have to say, they are pretty rigorous. But the difficult part was that it felt like just as I was close to my resolution, the goal posts would move, and I’d have much further to go. That can be discouraging, and it adds time to a resolution. I found that keeping a healthy attitude during those moments was important. Even though it seemed like there was always “one more” class to take or “one more” requirement to meet every time I got near the finish line, I also knew that each “setback”was a chance to learn and practice more. Although it took a little longer than anticipated, my team and I worked hard toward this goal, and eventually, we accomplished it. We were confident and prepared for the final tests and inspections, and now we’re helping patients with their own resolutions.

You can accomplish your goal, too. Just don’t give up! The discouragement you might feel now is temporary. If you keep working, you will get there — even if it takes a little longer than you might expect. As they say, just because it’s a New Year’s resolution doesn’t mean it’s a one-year resolution. And if your goal involves taking better care of yourself, we’re ready to help you accomplish it. Sedation dentistry is really valuable for patients who haven’t seen a dentist in a while, patients who may need more care than usual as a result. We can do more work in one sitting with sedation, which lets you play catch-up faster. If that sounds like the thing for you, or you have any questions, please call our office and let us help. –Dr. David Yates

It doesn't take a scientist to tell us that a healthy, loving relationship can lessen our stress — but did you know it also boosts our immune system's response and could help us live longer? Multiple studies have shown that couples in happy, loving marriages tend to have lower blood pressure. Marriage itself isn’t the key to a healthier life — the love is, researchers find. How do researchers define a loving relationship? To put it simply, it depends on the couples’ own opinion. Married couples with a high quality (aka loving) relationship showed significantly lower ambulatory systolic blood pressure than singles. However, happily married couples and singles had lower blood pressure than people in low quality marriages. Which means, at least in terms of your health, it’s much better to be single than unhappily married. How does it help your blood pressure exactly? Well, when positive events occur, the hormones oxytocin and vasopressin interact with your dopamine reward system. Vasopressin in particular helps control blood pressure. Love Boosts Your Immune System and Lifespan

However, it quickly drops in a long-term, stable relationship. Those low cortisol levels sustained for a long period of time contribute to many health benefits. But how does it improve your immune system? That’s a bit of a mystery to researchers. So far, women in love have shown changes in their gene regulation of immune cells compared to women not in love. Some theorize that this is in order to prepare for pregnancy. Unfortunately, we still don’t have conclusive research on whether men in love better fight flu and other viruses, too. High blood pressure is known as the “silent killer” since it has no symptoms, but it will steadily degrade your health over time, significantly increasing your risk of chronic conditions like heart disease. And while love is certainly not the only way to lower blood pressure, it’s comforting to know our loved ones can boost our health for a longer, happier life. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Of course, getting into a new relationship can be a little stressful! Cortisol, the stress hormone, initially rises when you fall in love.

The Truth About Hard-Bristled Toothbrushes Every time you’ve shopped for a new toothbrush, you’ve probably seen hard-bristled brushes mixed in with the soft-bristled brushes. However, dentists tell you to avoid them. So, why are they there? All three of these issues can then lead to other problems, such as increased sensitivity to hot and cold food and drinks and serious pain. As enamel is worn away and the gums recede, you also increase WHY THEY EXIST, AND WHY YOU SHOULD NEVER USE THEM

the chance for bacterial infections and inflammation. While it may feel like you’re giving your teeth a healthy cleaning with a hard-bristled brush, you’re actually doing lasting damage. When it comes to cleaning braces, retainers, or dentures, hard-bristled brushes can be useful. Anyone with braces knows how annoying it can be to clean them, and the occasional hard-bristled brushing is helpful. Just don’t make it an everyday habit. You can, however, use a hard-bristled toothbrush every day to clean your retainer or dentures. A hard- bristled brush is very useful for keeping these appliances clean,

Simply put, there is a market for them, and toothbrush manufacturers are going to take advantage of it. Some people use them because they think hard bristles “work better” to clean away plaque, tartar buildup, and stains. Other people also use them to clean braces and dentures, and some people don’t buy them for teeth at all! Instead, they use them for household cleaning, like scrubbing tile grout. So, are hard-bristled brushes really as bad as dentists say? Yes! If you use a hard-bristled toothbrush for your daily brushing, you put yourself at risk for several serious dental problems, including:

which, in turn, helps keep your mouth clean.

Enamel erosion

Here’s the bottom line: Never use a hard-bristled toothbrush for normal, everyday brushing — only supplementary cleaning. Otherwise, stick to softer brushes and regular checkups with your dentist to keep your teeth and gums looking their best.
