H oog teen die hange van die bosagtige Drakensberg lê Mariepskopskool. Geen besoeker wat die geleentheid het om 'n oomblik hier te verwyl, word nie onmiddelik stom geslaan deur die oorweldigende betowering van kranse,bosse en vlaktes nie. Mariepskop, een van die bekendste bakens in die noordelike Drakensbergreeks, hef sy kransmasse duisende voet bokant die blou-groen see van bosse. Maar laat ons begin by die begin. In 1936 het Oom Broer en tannie Langie Mare in hierdie wêreld beland met malaria en leeus as gevreesde bedreiging. In 1937 het nuwe intrekkers naby Bedford (Kampersrus) hulself kom vestig en die naaste skool was 160km hiervandaan oor die berg in Lydenburg. In 1938 het Mev. Mare dus aangebied om leerders te skool en het die eerste dogter haar les ontvang. Soos dit met alle skole gaan het die getalle gegroei en 1940bestaandie skool uit 5 leerders. Daar was nogal interessante buitemuurse aktiwiteite om die skooldae af te wissel. So kon die 7 leerders in 1942 een oggende aanskou hoe Oom Broer 2 leeus so 200m van die skool af in die stof laat byt! Dis juis op die plek waar die koshuis pryk vandag. Gedurende hierdie jaar het oom Broer begin bou aan 'n skool, weg van die huis, maar oorlog beperkings het voorraadproblememeegebring. In 1943 het 12 leerders onder die leiding van tant Langie 'n konsert aangebied en is die boufondsmet £27 aangevul. 1945 het as 'n groot dag aangebreek want Bedford privaatskooldae was verby, tant Langie was die eerste bekleër van 'n amptelike onderwyspos en met 30 kinders op die rol word die eerste skoolhoof ook ingespan in Januarie 1946. OomBroer het 3 klasse bygebou en elkeweeksdag het 50 leerders saamdieMare's aan tafel gesit en eet. Met die jare het n hele paar skoolhoofde en geleidelike ontwikkelinge plaasgevind. Die bestaan van 'n volwaardige skool is 'n voldonge feit. Die onderwys departemant het 30morg grondby gekoop en ook aangebou. Na selfs 'n groot ramp toe die koshuis een nag tot op die grond afgebrand het, is 'n nuwe koshuis en skool in 1952 metmeermoderne geboue voltooi en ingewei. En soos die slimmense sê…die res is geskiedenis.

I t is at nightfall when the lights come on that you notice, from a distance, that there is a sizeable village tucked into the lap of towering Mariepskop. By day you have to go up close to see the houses hidden among the trees. The name-board says Kampersrus, and travellers on the road running next to the base of the Blyde River Canyon section of the Drakensberg can easily mistake this as referring only to the garage and the fewbuildings along the roadside. The houses are set well off the road in woods that rapidly change with the elevation from low bush-willow, leadwoods, acacias and the like to enormous forest types with an assortment of ferns covering the ground under them and with patches of lichen on their trunks. The street ends in a loop round the Mariepskop Primary School. Behind it soars the red cliffs of Mariepskop, towering 1 944 metres above sea level, and across its green sports fields in front stretches the Lowveld's Hoedspruit-Timbavati region towards Kruger National Park and the Lebombo Mountains appearing through the haze in the distance. “God's spoiling us,” acknowledged Renier de Meyer, a previous principal at the school. The hamlet was founded in the 1940s on a farm named Bedford whose owner, Broer Maré, gave it its name, meaning “campers' rest” because he thought it an ideal stay-over for travellers crossing themountain range into the Lowveld. The spectacular Blyde River Canyon is around the corner, Kruger Park's Orpen Gate is a half-hour's drive away and the Kapama Reservewith its cheetah breeding centre is down the road. Next door is the famedMoholoholoWildlife Rehabilitation Centre, the name of which is said to mean the “big, big battle”. It refers to a clash that took place in the vicinity in 1864 when the Swazis were

convincingly beaten by a Bapedi tribe led by Chief Maripi Mashile after whomtheMariepskop buttress was named. A day's circuit route takes you across the Blyde River past numerous curio and fruit stalls, through the StrydomTunnel and to a cluster of curio stalls just beyond where Michael Khumako will, for a fee, point out the tiny shapes of the rare Taita falcons breeding high up the cliff above the road. From there the route takes you down the scenic Abel Erasmus pass and on to the escarpment's Panorama Route with its spectacular viewing sites such as God's Window, Bourke's Luck Potholes, the Pinnacle and the Three Rondavels. You then swing back via the charming town of Graskop and down pretty Konwyn Pass. Highest up themountain slope of the Kampersrus lodges is Amafu, meaning clouds. With its back to the cliffs, and with sweeping views over the Lowveld, it is a distinctly upmarket lodge set among the rocks under low, Lowveldcombretumtrees. Further down is Little Bush Lodge, owned by Stephan Kemp, a grandson of the hamlet's founder, Broer Maré. He has constructed a charming rock-and-thatch lodge among the trees, with bridges crossing a pond where bridal couples like to pose for pictures against a backdrop of bush and the toweringmountain. Kampersrus offers freehold properties, and a large variety of large plots, with amazing views of the lowveld. There is also Escarpia Security Estate which borders the Moholoholo Nature Reserve. Escarpia is made up of 63 stands of 250 sqm each, with a communal pool for the use of the owners. COLD BLOODED? South Africa is known for its snakes, especially its venomous ones, however one of the nation's most impressive snakes is its only python species, the Southern African python (Python natalensis). The Southern African python is by far the largest snake in Southern Africa. This gigantic snake can reach just over five meters in length, can weigh up to 65kg and can live to more than 30 years old. The Southern African python is a protected species in South Africa however, it is rare to find specimens over 4meters these days.

Snakes are often thought of as callous and uncaring however the Southern African python is a prime example of the exact opposite. Female Southern African pythons are dedicated and attentive in their care for their babies rivalling that of any mammal or bird. Who knew cold blooded animals were capable of this? There is much more yet to be discovered about the secret lives of reptiles.

The Southern African python is predominantly nocturnal and feeds on a variety of small to medium sized mammals, birds and occasionally reptiles. Mature adults can swallow large prey which regularly includes duiker and other juvenile antelope species. Snakes play a vital role in ecosystems as pest controller's in our natural environments. This species is an effective predator that has heat-sensitive pits that detect the heat signature of other animals allowing these snakes to hunt and capture their prey in complete darkness. Southern African pythons can only reproduce once they are two to three meters in length, generally at least three to five years old. Males will travel in search of a receptive female and may then remain with the female for several months. A female southern African python can lay 30-100 leathery shelled eggs every second to third year. Pregnant females will carefully choose a nesting site, usually a unused termite mound or aardvark burrow, and coil around their eggs incubating them. Almost daily, the female will leave the safety of the nest site to bask in the sun, raising her body temperature to its critical maximum limit. She then coils back around her precious eggs, keeping themwarm. A femalewill remain in the nesting site in this waywithout feeding for a period of more than six months. In doing so, a female can lose up to 40% of her body mass whilst incubating her eggs showing tremendous dedication to her clutch. Whilst maternal care through incubation is not unheard of in pythons, Southern African python mothers have been shown to continue to watch over their babies even after they have hatched. After basking, she carefully coils around the newly hatched snakes, with care not to squash any of her precious babies. Indeed, Southern African python females have been shown to provide their offspring with warmth and protection until they dispersed some two weeks post hatching, something previously unheard of in egg-laying snake species. When a female African python breeds, she also changes colour to almost black in a process known as facultativemelanism. This process has never been reported in other snake species and is believed to be an adaptation allowing females to warm up faster and more efficiently during basking. It may therefore allow females to bask for shorter periods of time and consequently protect their clutch for longer periods of time.

Plan a Succulent Garden | Part 2 by Admin Fieldworks

Focal point A focal point is one of the key elements of good garden design that does not need to be in keeping with the style and feel of the rest of the garden. ALWAYS consider putting a focal point in the garden. Plant this first, and then continue planting around it. Repeat plantings Repetition creates rhythm in the garden and ties it t o g e t h e r b e a u t i f u l l y . Repetition can be in the

form of plant species, shape or form, colour or in the containers that you use. Repetition creates visual simplicity, and this will enhance the harmony in your garden. Groupings Group plants together for a stronger effect. Make a statement with a couple of the same species of succulents. This is particularly impactful if you use plants with different leaf and stemcolours. Contrast Succulents come in an array of shapes, textures and colours. Contrasting these against each other can accentuate their features, providing variety and interest, but always keeping the harmony of the design inmind. Height and Scale Be aware of the eventual size of plants newly planted in your garden relative to the size of your garden and other planting. Tall, bold succulents are wonderful focal points, but keep their scale in proportion to the size of your garden. When planting, leave space around younger large plants to accommodate their eventual size. Using Rock and other accessories Apart from creating interest in the succulent garden, accessories such as rock, pebbles and driftwood, create habitat for wildlife. Accessories such as pots and sculpture can even be used to create a focal point or enhance a plant that is the focal point. Keep accessories in context with the rest of the design. Ultimately, whatever garden stylewe choose to adopt in our gardens, we should endeavour to act sustainably, conserving energy and water in every way possible. By preserving natural habitats and incorporating all or at least some elements of sustainability in our gardens we can maintain the bio-diversity that urbanisation so often displaces and often exterminates.

we are a wildlife rehab centre, but importantly, we are also a sanctuary.

We hope that with the new year it brings lots of new visitors (as well as old) to our rehab centre! Whether this be by volunteering or by simply joining us for one of our guided tours around the centre! Moholoholo Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation Centre is open Mondays to Saturdays with two guided tours per day. The first is at 9.30amand the second at 3pm. When you arrive at the centre you are encouraged to take a walk around our museum… it is unlike any in the world! Here you will see many individuals that sadly did not make it, whether it be due to car accidents, fence and powerline collisions, poisonings, snaring and trapping etc. All of the wildlife in our museum are cases that we have personally treated and cared for here at Moholoholo. After themuseumyou arewelcome to browse around our curio shop in search of the perfect piece of memorabilia to take home as a reminder of your visit to Moholoholo or grab a cool drink at the tuck shop before your tour starts. At the beginning of your tour, your experienced guide will talk to you all about the inception of Moholoholo, what work we have achieved and what our philosophies are. They will also explain to you that all the animals you will see on the tour are our residents, they will not be released! Due to their injuries or upbringing they are not suitable for release but instead act as ambassadors for their species so that visitors like yourself can learn about Africa's wildlife and the problems it is facing! After this important introduction, you will begin the tour. Depending on your guide, it will determine where you begin but you will be taken around the centre to see our birds of prey including the largest eagle in Africa, the Martial eagle, some smaller raptors and the incredible vultures. Youwill also get to see the predators that call Moholoholo home including

A visit to Moholoholo is a real experience; one which many do not forget. Many walk away from the tour wanting to help spread the word of what problems we need to tackle to help wildlife or even more amazingly, begin a career withwildlife. ANY and ALLWILDLIFE THATWILL BE RELEASED IS KEPTOFF TOUR. These individuals are kept far fromhuman activity to ensure that they do not become accustomed to humans, in other words so that they stay naturally wary of people. It is also to ensure that their stress levels are at a minimum. Unless it is a patient that requires intensive treatment or is a baby that needs around the clock care, human interactionwith the releasablewildlife is kept to aminimum. This includes feeding, cleaning when needed and the necessary health and enclosuremaintenance checks.

As previously mentioned, the animals and birds that you will see are not suitable for release. Some of these reasons are

obvious to the naked eye, for example, many of the birds here have only one wing or wings that have healed in the wrong position from being found too late. Others are not so obvious. For example, the predators. Most of these have been hand raised. When an orphaned, t iny and helpless predator is brought to us by the public, our only option is to raise it ourselves. That involves bottle feeding, toileting and providing the love and interaction they would receive from their mother or family unit. Yes, the alternative argument is
