PROUD TO BE AMERICANS
Celebrating the Red, White, and Blue
Each year on the Fourth of July, we celebrate with a “boom” (or many booms, depending on the size of the fireworks show that year) while proudly supporting our red, white, and blue. We come together as a nation to celebrate the founding of our country and our independence. Parades, barbecues, picnics, parties, fireworks shows, and family gatherings all take place for the birthday of our nation, and it’s always a fabulous time. In the 1760s and 1770s, “taxation without representation” rang throughout the 13 American Colonies while they were under British rule and were forced to pay taxes to the King of England, even though they were not represented in the British Parliament. On June 11, 1776, the Second Continental Congress, including Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, John Adams, and Robert R. Livingston, met to draft a document setting forth our intent to be free from British rule. Many changes were made to this document, and on July 4, 1776, the final version was completed and called the Declaration of Independence, America’s first symbol of independence. The Declaration of Independence provided the groundwork for a fair and just government, and the Constitution, which protects our nation from an overreaching state, outlines how this government should function as a democracy with equal rights for all. Our freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of press, and more come from the Constitution, which acts as the framework of our democracy as we know it today. It’s a system of checks and balances between the branches of government.
From the Constitution, we have the judicial branch, which we rely on heavily to seek justice for our clients. In fact, one of the very first acts of the new Congress was to put a judiciary system in place to outline the laws citizens must abide by to keep our society safe, just, and peaceful. Today’s judicial system is based on a set of principles that defend the freedoms we gained on the Fourth of July. Equality, justice, fairness, and tolerance are all protected by law — our foundation here at the firm. We aim to deliver the best for our clients while seeking justice and protecting their rights. Without all of the liberating events that took place on July 4, 1776, freedom as we know it today would not be the same, and I’m not sure my role here at Holland & Usry would exist or hold as much importance in our society. This Fourth of July, I hope each of you celebrates safely with family and friends. Remember to wear sunscreen, have a designated driver if you decide to drink, be extra careful on the roads, and have a great time! Happy birthday, America!

A LOVE OF LEARNING
Starts at Home
show how your school experiences developed your critical thinking skills, enhanced your creativity, and put you on a career path that was best for you. If your child enjoys more hands-on activities to learn, engage them in projects or field trips that allow them to touch and interact with materials alongside others. They’ll develop a love for learning in a mode that connects with their ideal learning style. Another way to instill the value of education in your child is to cultivate their passions while teaching them. Take them to the library and check out books about what they love. If they’re interested in a certain animal, take them to the zoo or to an aquarium to see it in real life. You can even take them to museums to explore science and history. Keep in mind that your child is going to mimic your behaviors, so be open-minded when it comes to education and learning. Read your own books alongside your child to motivate them to continue reading independently. Talk about the zoo animals and museum exhibits with your child to further encourage fun conversations about each topic to keep them interested. Finding activities that encourage your child to grow as a young learner will benefit them, no matter what time of year it is, but fun summertime educational experiences will keep your child entertained and prepared for the next school year!
When you were growing up, you probably dreaded going to school as much as any other kid until your parents taught you the value of education. And now, your child may be going through that same phase. Perhaps they’re struggling to understand specific concepts, or they’re falling behind their peers and are embarrassed. Whatever the case may be for your child, you can use summer to teach them how to love learning and value education as much as you do. First, you can start by explaining the reasons why education is vital in a relatable way. Use examples from your own educational journey to

CASE RESULTS SNAPSHOT Prior Injuries Can’t Stop Us!
Our client, Sharon, had a seemingly long-shot South Carolina slip- and-fall case: She fell on invisible black ice in a Spartanburg parking lot and re-injured a knee she’d already had several surgeries on. She was referred to us by another lawyer who doesn’t handle injury cases, and while we knew her case was tough, after some investigation, we were confident we could prove the parking lot owner’s carelessness caused her injuries. When Sharon fell on the invisible black ice, her boyfriend, James, witnessed it and together, they did two very important things right away. First, they reported the fall to the business owner (the employee said she saw the fall but couldn’t do anything), and they also took photographs of the scene, which showed the sidewalk appearing to be free of ice. Sharon’s picture of the “ice-free” sidewalk set the stage for us to prove the business gave her the expectation the parking lot had also been cleared of ice, explaining why she exited her car without expecting any ice to be present. This fact stripped the defense of comparative negligence that Sharon caused her injuries because she wasn’t careful enough. But we still had to prove the company’s negligence. The employee was wrong in shrugging it off by saying, “There’s nothing I could do.”
Here’s how we proved the slip-and-fall accident was preventable, and why the business was careless:
1. They didn’t do anything to clear the black ice from the parking lot.
2. They didn’t warn customers the parking lot remained icy. 3. They didn’t inspect the parking lot to make sure it was safe for customers. The next hurdle was proving Sharon’s new injuries to her knee, which had prior complications and surgeries. Knowing the insurance company would fight like dogs over this, we met with the orthopedic surgeon who had handled her previous operations. Those meetings yielded clear, powerful evidence of exactly what this fall caused. Once the insurance company received our evidence, we reached a settlement leaving both Sharon and her referring attorney happy she came to us. While it was a challenging case many attorneys might not have pursued, I’m thankful we took it on for Sharon and proved to the business that, yes, they could have done something about it. Sharon saw a $75,000 success in this case!

Heroes don’t always wear capes or stand on two legs — and in a specific case with a German shepherd, this is exceptionally true! A dog noticed that one of his favorite tiny humans was in some serious danger, so he saved the day, two times! A little boy and girl enjoyed the day, tossing a ball back and forth in their backyard. When the girl overthrew the ball, it unfortunately fell into a small pond behind the boy. The girl rushed inside the house to get help, but the boy stayed outside and even ended up leaning over the edge of the pond as he tried to retrieve the ball on his own. This is when a protective German shepherd, lying nearby in the grass, saw everything and immediately sprung into action. The dog first looked into the pond to locate the ball. Then, knowing the boy was in danger as he teetered on the edge, the dog tugged on the little boy’s vest with his teeth, pulling him backward to safety near the back patio of the home. Once the little boy was in a safe location, the dog located a pole net that had been leaning against the house and brought it over to the pond. While his tail wagged with pride, the dog fished the ball out of the pond. A Round of A-Paws This Amazing Pup Saves the Day — Twice!
The dog then put the net down on the ground near the pond and brought the ball over to the boy. This German shepherd saved the day for this little boy and girl — and also saved the boy from injury and needing a dry set of clothes! What an amazing canine. He deserves a treat and a round of a-paws!
