A NOTE FROM SYLVIA

Welcome to our first member magazine of the new year. As we turn the corner on 2020, we are all hoping that 2021 will mean healthier days, significant progress to eliminate COVID-19’s impact in our communities and across the globe, and perhaps even socializing in person with our family and friends. This month we will feature Minnesota Experience programs from all six public television stations that tell a Moving Lives Minnesota story, and Almanac at the Capitol is back beginning January 6th. Part of PBS Masterpiece , the re-make of period veterinary drama All Creatures Great and Small returns January 10th.

Throughout this issue, we’re highlighting Racism Unveiled , our newest initiative. Racism Unveiled is a storytelling project that aims to call out racism and highlight solutions from our communities to end systemic racism. This multiplatform project focuses on complex societal issues and inequities that affect the daily lives of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color in Minnesota. Over the next two years, TPT will deliver multimedia content and engage our community on topics such as Health and Wellness, Internalized Racism, Justice and Law, and Housing and Employment. We began this project last February with lead support from the Otto Bremer Trust, and subsequently also received generous support from HealthPartners. The initiative took on even greater urgency when the pandemic struck in March and then, in May, George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis while in police custody. Our creative team directed their energy toward this project by collaborating with community leaders and partner organizations, to listen, be informed, and ensure that we meaningfully address subjects that matter to our communities.

When Your Trusted Professionals Retire By Jon Friedman

A few months ago, I received the kind of jolt from my tax preparer that many of us will get sooner or later. He informed me that he'd decided to retire in the coming years. While I was happy for him, I immediately recognized the implications for me: our 29-year association would be coming to an end and I'd need to find someone to take his place. Someone I could trust, afford and enjoy doing business with. His bulletin threatened to upend my life, the same way similar news from a long-time doctor, dentist or lawyer might. Finding a new specialist can be a challenge and a potential point of stress or anxiety. Now I'd have to find someone just as trustworthy, wise and knowledgeable of both the tax code and my unique financial life. Could I succeed in finding someone every bit as reliable? It's helpful to do your own research when your pro is nearing retirement. But a word-of-mouth reference from someone you trust can be key. That could help you know whether their expert's personality would be a good fit for you. Let's face it. We're bound to feel skittish the first time we enter the office of a new specialist for us. "You can get intimidated," acknowledged Mark Diamond, an attorney who recently had to find a dental surgeon to replace the one he'd been using for 30 years.

Fortunately for Diamond, he found a new dental surgeon referred by his retiring one and is pleased — he trusts the man's expertise and the office is a short drive away.

A Former State Lawmaker Wants to Change the Mental Health System By Laura McCallum

Former Minnesota lawmaker Mindy Greiling hopes her new book will lead to systemic change across the country. In "Fix What You Can: Schizophrenia and a Lawmaker's Fight for Her Son," Greiling tells the story of trying to get care for her son Jim, diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder in his early twenties (he's now 43). She discovered the gaps in the system, pushed for more mental health funding and helped found the nation's first state bipartisan mental health caucus.

Greiling served in the Minnesota House for 20 years as a Democrat from Roseville.

Next Avenue: You wrote about trying to get help for Jim while you were a state legislator. You were trying to change the system and deal with your son's illness. Why write the book now? Mindy Greiling: When I left the Legislature, I no longer had a voice in the mental health arena. I could work with my legislators, I could work through NAMI, (National Alliance on Mental Illness), but I missed having a voice. When I was invited to join a memoir group at the Loft Literary Center, I quickly felt that I was meant to write this book. I'd always been a writer and kept a journal. So I had places to go back and help jog my memory. It also then gave me a chance to continue stronger advocacy. There's something that gives you a certain gravitas if you've written a book. And I'm finding that with this book, I'm invited to go places besides Minnesota and talk about the mental health system.

Still Learning After All These Years By Barbara Snow

This essay is part of the Telling Our Stories series, featuring the voices of Next Avenue readers.

Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, speaking at the National Press Club in 2018, quoted Robert Frost, "The older I get, the younger are my teachers." Maybe Madeleine and I have the same teachers. Dealing with COVID-19, and the results of the systemic racial disparities in our country, while watching our nation teetering on a tightrope between democracy and authoritarianism, it would be easy for me to slip into a feeling of despair that nothing will be right again. But here's where I luck out. I live in an elegant, slightly quirky, 80-year-old inner-city apartment complex in Minneapolis, made up of mostly young tenants, many of them recent college graduates. A lot of them are deeply in debt for their education and work multiple jobs, including maintenance and cleaning in our complex. I've come to know most of these "youngsters," and while my first impulse was to share all 66 years of my life experiences and advice with them, I've quickly learned that they offer me much more wisdom if I just shut up and listen. For example: I’ve learned that those with the least to give, give the most. During the protests over the murder of George Floyd, I watched as they formed groups to keep tabs on what was happening in our neighborhood, stood watch through the night and then went out in the morning to help clean up the streets that were at the epicenter of the looting. They continued to demonstrate their commitment to humanity throughout the summer by cooking and delivering much needed meals to the homeless encampments that sprung up in our parks as a result of the economic disaster that unfolded because of COVID-19.

I've learned that a portfolio of investments means nothing to most of these young adults, but making enough tips from a waitressing job to help pay for food for someone else is an investment of inestimable worth. I've watched them collect clothes, diapers and hygiene products to give away in the neighborhood. I'm lucky because my portfolio allows me to invest a little cash in their good work, which is a win- win for all of us.

I've learned that as disheartened as the news makes me some days, if I just go outside into our apartment courtyard and hang out for a while, I'm sure to feel a little better. Everyone was out there on the fine summer days, tending a garden plot or practicing the violin or working on a drawing. Their generosity of spirit and willingness to accept people of every age, creed, color or sexual identity gives me hope that despite the ugliness I see on all the news outlets, there is a spirit in the young that won't be broken by our fears, our prejudices or our acquired bad behaviors. I've learned that I have nothing to teach them and every reason to follow their lead.

The Tax Rules for Home Businesses andWorking from Home

Maybe, due to the pandemic, you've started a home business this year or working from home as an employee. If so, you'll want to understand the tax rules so you know what you can and can't write off on your 2020 tax return. If you are self-employed working out of a home office, here's the basic rule: the office area must be used for work entirely and on a regular basis, either as your main place of business or a place to meet with clients. That doesn't mean the whole room must be used exclusively for work; just that at least part of it is. Deductible expenses can include a pro-rated portion of your mortgage or rent, homeowner's or renter's insurance, home repairs and utility bills, based on the square footage of your home and office. You can also deduct the cost of your home-office equipment and supplies. The tax law lets you fully write off in one year any purchases like a new computer and office furniture. Self-employed people can write-off business expenses such as professional fees, training and education, licensing and certification.

People telecommuting due to the COVID-19 pandemic who are full-time employees cannot claim the home office deduction – even if they set aside a part of their home as an office.

Instead, "taxpayers can request reimbursement from their employers for home-office expenses such as office supplies and equipment, and those repayments are not taxable to the employee if there is adequate documentation" said Eileen Sherr, American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) director for tax policy & advocacy.

I n many ways, Minnesota lives up to its nickname, “The North Star State.” We rank among the top states in the country in terms of home ownership, education achievement, and health and wellness. We have an abundance of green space and, despite the undesirable winters, we find a way to power through every year. For a high quality of life, you’d be hard pressed to find many places better than this... if you’re white. But, for many BIPOC residents, we experience an alternate reality. It can feel like this utopia is a façade, or worse...it isn’t meant for us.
