As November is upon us, I have been reflecting on what this change in season represents: a time of harvest, a time of giving, a time of gratitude, and the winding down of what has been another remarkable year at TPT. We have also been putting the finishing touches on our strategic plan. We can’t wait to share it with you soon. This month we are proud to feature programming that honors Native American Heritage month as well as Veteran’s Day. To those of you who have served, thank you.

I would like to highlight a standout documentary, The People’s Protectors . The film follows four Native American veterans as they reflect on their experiences during the Vietnam War. You can stream it now on our website at tpt.org/the-peoples-protectors or by using the PBS Video App on your smart TV or mobile phone. The film was notably produced at TPT by the accomplished Leya Hale. Her newest documentary, Bring Her Home , surrounds the missing and murdered indigenous women movement. In October, TPT was honored to receive twenty regional Emmy nominations and take home nine awards! Before high speed internet, telephones, and even Highway 61, Minnesota's North Shore was connected by water — specifically a fleet of sailing vessels and steamers that hauled mail, fish, freight and passengers to communities up and down the coastline. The Steamer America was a star in the early 1900s, with her speed and relative luxury she became a vital lifeline and a friend to many. Exercise YourWay to Better Brain Health Of the five components in Sherzai's lifestyle intervention, exercise is the one he typically recommends implementing first. "Whenever we apply behavior change to a population, we're looking to create sustainable habits with small successes people can see right away, and nothing is better than exercise. It's easy to implement, measurable and precise, with a fast return," Sherzai said. After only a few weeks of regular exercise, his patients often feel better, get better sleep and their lipid and blood glucose profiles improve. Sherzai explained that these are some of the indirect ways exercise reduces risk for Alzheimer's, because each of those factors are associated with higher rates of the disease.

Alzheimer's disease is among the fastest-growing and most deadly diseases. What's worse, there are currently no effective treatments or therapies to stop or reverse it and it's commonly thought that cognitive

function inevitably declines as we grow older.

It makes sense, then, that so many people feel a powerless kind of fear when pondering their cognitive futures. A big question mark looming out there beyond age 65: "Will I get it, or will I be lucky?" Happily, according to leading brain scientists, luck has little to do with it for most people. Prevention, The Magic Pill While there is no cure for Alzheimer's disease, and an estimated 3% of all cases are entirely genetic, recent research suggests that lifestyle interventions could help slow its progression. Dr. Dean Sherzai, a clinical neurologist and co-director of the Brain Health and Alzheimer's Prevention Program at Loma Linda University in California, has developed a five-component lifestyle intervention therapy he uses with patients. "We have people coming to us with early signs, or so- called subjective impairment, and then we have people a little more advanced, classified as having mild cognitive impairment, or MCI," Sherzai explained. "We give them interventions, give them advice on changes they can make to their lifestyle components and we look at what happens."

He also listed three direct links between exercise and improved brain health:

First direct benefit: Exercise increases blood flow to the brain, which delivers more oxygen and nutrients.

Second direct benefit: It simultaneously flushes inflammatory and oxidative elements out the brain faster. "Cognitive decline starts vascularly," Sherzai said, "and exercise helps with this more than anything else. Third direct benefit: An increase in a chemical called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) which Sherzai says, "is almost like growth hormones for neurons, but specifically for the connections between neurons." Maintaining these neuronal connections is a key in preventing Alzheimer's disease.

What Type of Exercise Is Best for Brain Health? While brain scientists agree that exercise is good for preventing cognitive decline, they don't yet know if any one type is better than another, but it's something scientists are starting to research. For now, multiple studies have shown that both aerobic and resistance training have major cognitive benefits.

In a study published in July 2021 in the Journal of Applied Physiology, brisk treadmill walking at moderate-to high- intensities was shown to improve performance on memory tests of participants previously classified with MCI, aged 55 to 80. A 2020 Australian study published in the journal NeuroImage: Clinical showed six months of resistance training not only resulted in improved cognition, but protected a region of the brain particularly vulnerable to Alzheimer's disease for up to a year after cessation of exercise.

Here, participants aged 55 and over did three sets of eight repetitions of five exercises three times per week. The exercises were done on pneumatic resistance machines and included the chest press, leg press, seated row, standing hip abduction and knee extension. Intensity Matters While a wide variety of exercise types offer protection against developing Alzheimer's disease, they all tend to be fairly intense. Sherzai noted there is some evidence that there may be an upper limit to the intensity, above which there is no added benefit, or possibly even harm. But generally speaking, the more strenuous your workout, the better.

"Both aerobic and anaerobic exercise are effective," Sherzai said, "but they must be strenuous enough to get your blood pumping."

He especially recommends exercises involving the legs, whether that's walking, running, cycling or weight lifting, because, "your legs — not the heart — are the largest pump in the body and moving that blood changes the architecture of the brain's vascular system. It makes it healthier."

For those not healthy enough to engage in moderate or strenuous activity, Sherzai says that lighter exercise still has both direct and indirect benefits for the brain. It's not one or the other, but rather a matter of degrees.

The take-away here is this: Exercise! As often as you can, for as long as you can, as strenuously as you can. Your brain will thank you.

How The CREW Connects BIPOC Youth To Horses and Hopes To Change Lives Racial gatekeeping often prevents kids of color from experiencing equine sports and the great outdoors. By Maren Machles

Arocho grew up in a first-generation immigrant household. Her family is from the Dominican Republic and, while growing up she was able to occasionally go to the Dominican Republic to see family and be in nature, most of her life was in an urban setting without much access to natural spaces and outdoor activities. Because her mom was a single business woman, Arocho had to grow up at an early age, she recalls. But she wants her children to really enjoy their childhood – and part of that involves connecting with nature. Both Hannah and Raquel love horses, and their mother has made an effort to try to find opportunities for the girls to be around them and learn more. But as a family of color, they’ve experienced feeling “othered” in equine spaces, with Arocho even saying she goes out of her way to dress in a way that prevents others from confusing her as “the help.” “In certain spaces, we are looked at like we don’t belong, and I could say honestly, we probably don’t, based on their mindset,” Arocho said. “There are very few families that have opportunities like this, and that’s where I think Jenny comes in, and the CREW comes in, and opens spaces.” Gatekeeping in the Outdoors While affordability is certainly an issue, basic access has historically been a key barrier when it comes to Black, Indigenous and communities of color utilizing and partaking in outdoor activities. Dr. KangJae “Jerry” Lee, an assistant professor at the College of Natural Resources, Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management at North Carolina State University, has written and published research on how African Americans and other communities of color have systematically been cut off from accessing public parks, travel and other outdoor activities.

Across a pasture of tall grass, brown, black and white horses munch on hay and shake their manes in the wind. Behind a stable, Hannah Mordan, 9, and Raquel Mordan, 8, brush Paprika – a Welsh pony – and clean her hooves. Hannah and Raquel’s mom, Noemi Arocho, brings them to the Strofus Stock Farm almost every weekend for the girls to learn about horses and connect with nature through the CREW Urban Youth Equestrians. Paprika and Samir, an Arabian-cross gelding, belong to Jenny Benton, one of the co-founders of the CREW, which stands for Community, Relationship, Empowerment and Well-being. Benton, along with her childhood friends Kenatia Gilmer and Chauntel Allen, co-founded the CREW in order to create a space for urban American descendants of slaves, Indigenous/Native, Hispanic/Latino, Asian and all youth of color in Saint Paul and Minneapolis to discover confidence and power in themselves through horses. Hannah and Raquel were the first to sign up for lessons when the CREW opened shop in March 2021. “They often say that this is their happy place, and so that says to me that this is filling their hearts,” Arocho said. “For me, it was important for my girls to connect with nature at an early age, because it took me until later on in life, being an adult, to be able to really appreciate and love nature.”

These historical contexts had a significant impact on the access communities of color had to the many mental and physical benefits that outdoor recreation provides. And because many of the skills and knowledge for outdoor activities are passed down from generation to generation, these negative experiences with outdoor spaces have had lasting impacts. “Their grandparents, their great grandparents, they were not able to enjoy these natural amenities, and if they did so they may have risked their lives,” Lee says. That is why the CREW and other programs like it are important. They are trying to rid the stigma around outdoor spaces and instill natural knowledge in younger generations.

Lee said that initially American settlers didn’t perceive the natural environment as desirable because they had to overcome and tame it for agriculture in order to survive. But in the mid- to late- 1800s, with urbanization, the white, powerful conservation and park leaders started to romanticize nature for the first time, and created an implicit binary between nature and city life. “In this implicit city-nature binary, nature was viewed as a desirable environment and a get-away from many urban problems such as crowding, poor housing and sanitations, and… a lot of immigrants and people of color.” Lee goes further, explaining that conservationists, such as Madison Grant, Theodore Roosevelt and Gifford Pinchot, who played a critical role in creating national parks, were eugenicists and expressed little-to-no interest in racial and ethnic inclusivity in nature. “Those three individuals were eugenicists who believed in white supremacism. And, one of the main reasons they wanted to preserve nature was because they believed nature was the perfect context for the white race to thrive,” Lee says. “Basically, they equated conservation, such as creating national parks and forests, as a means of white race preservation and the nation’s advancement.” Prior to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, many people of color were barred from, or segregated at public recreational sites.

Despite the fact that the equine community is predominantly white, the co-founders shared that they’ve received an outpouring of support from the community and hope to continue to grow. “This space has been closed off to families of color, and that’s not okay. What we’re building at the CREW is changing the perception of who gets to be an equestrian,” Benton said. “[The kids in the program] own this space, this is their time.
