YOUR MONEY, YOUR DREAMS Joan Edwards on Achieving Peace of Mind

It’s a great feeling to know your money is working for you. As a Branch Manager with Jamaica Money Market Brokers, I get to help persons

Every client who comes to us has unique needs and financial goals when it comes to their money. With that in mind, we go to work to develop a documented plan that is specific to those needs and goals. Then, when we implement the plan and it starts to work, that’s when we see their peace of mind. That peace of mind means everything! It means everything to the client, and it means everything to me! I know I’ve succeeded for a client when they realize they can achieve their goals and when their dreams become possible. When clients first come to us, they have questions about the next steps they should take with their money. After all, like you, they’ve worked hard over the years. They have saved, and now they are ready to grow their money further. I’ve been working with JMMB wealth management and the financial services industry for 20 years. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of helping hundreds of clients reach their financial goals. For me, there isn’t anything greater than watching dreams come alive. It’s an amazing thing to see! And it’s not just in working in wealth management that I’ve seen dreams come alive. I have another passion: volleyball. Years ago, I started playing volleyball to keep in shape. I got pretty good at it! Eventually, I was asked to work with Special Olympics Jamaica and formed a part of the first ever unified volleyball team for Jamaica. I got to teach a wonderful group of people about teamwork. This past April, the team played their first international competition in Panama at the Latin American Games. In the end, we came home with an Olympic bronze medal! It was miraculous! I watched this team pursue their dreams and saw them come true. Now, the team has set a new goal. We are getting ready for the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi, Dubai in 2019. This

put their money to work and achieve financial security and peace of mind.

Specifically, as a Branch Manager, I provide oversight for many of JMMB’s day-to-day activities. I am blessed to lead a team of dedicated

Personal Portfolio Managers who are warm professionals, committed to helping clients achieve their financial goals while delivering exceptional service. I help guide my team as they manage client portfolios, and I seek out new and exciting investment opportunities in the marketplace, while monitoring the performance of existing strategies.

We are always looking for new and innovative ways to invest, and then extend those opportunities to you, our clients. The truth about wealth is that there are many different ways to create it. In short, we know you want to see your money grow. That’s where we come in. When we identify new, creative, nontraditional forms of investment, we give our clients more options that allow them to diversify their portfolios and achieve their goals sooner. When you can diversify your portfolio, you spread around financial risk, meaning you have less to worry about. Another aspect of my role is to keep my team educated and up to date on market matters and upcoming investment strategies, both traditional and nontraditional. Through this ongoing education, we can deliver the highest level of service possible — service that keeps our clients happy! I love it when our clients are happy, but more than that, I love when a client comes to us with a question, concern or goal they want to achieve, and we can help them. For instance, a client may come to us with a financial goal in mind, but no idea or plan for how to get there. We patiently work with them to develop and implement a personalized financial plan and celebrate with them when that goal is achieved.

will be the first time the Special Olympics World Games will have been held in the Middle East.

I can’t wait to see what our team achieves next — and I can’t wait to help more clients achieve dreams of their own! -Joan Edwards

4 FOODS FOR YOUTHFUL EXUBERANCE

Blueberries These juicy little blue balls of goodness are packed with antioxidants, which keep cells functioning at peak performance. That includes cells in the brain and those believed to be associated with both short- and long- term memory. Eat blueberries as a snack, toss them in a smoothie, or add a handful to some salad, oatmeal, or cottage cheese. Flaxseed One of the easiest ways to boost your omega-3 fatty acid intake is to add a few tablespoons of ground flaxseed to foods you already eat (freshly ground is best). Omega-3s help reduce inflammation, which in turn reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke. Flaxseed is also high in fiber. These wonderful things come together to lower LDL cholesterol. Salmon This is one fishy friend that’s packed with omega-3 fatty acids. Salmon is one of the heart-healthiest sources of protein you can eat. Other varieties of fish are exceptionally heart-healthy as well, namely sardines and anchovies, but those can be an acquired taste for some folks (though they are great in salads).

What we eat influences not only our overall health, but how we age. Diets high in fat and sugar tend

to age us quicker — and they can be detrimental to our brain, especially when it comes to memory and cognition. Want to maintain a youthful spark and

keep your mind sharp as you age? It’s all a matter of incorporating the following foods into your diet (while cutting down on the junk).

Avocados These green machines are high in healthy,

monounsaturated fat. It helps maintain a more ideal blood pressure and can help reduce the risk of high blood pressure as you age. Because avocados are high in fat, you still want to watch how much you eat. Like any of the foods on this list, consuming too much of a good thing can negate the positive health benefits.

A Nontraditional Investment You Need to Know About COMMODITY REPO DEFINED

There are many nontraditional ways to invest your money and to put it to work for you. One such method that offers low-risk returns is a commodity repo.

When it comes to sugar, the product is insured, and it is working capital for the sugar producers, which lowers investor risk. At the end of the term agreement, the seller buys back the sugar and then sells it on the open market. This allows them to pay the farmers while also earning profit. It’s a win-win for all involved parties. If you would like to participate in a commodity repo offer please contact your Personal Portfolio Manager to participate in the Jamaica Cane products Commodity Repo outlined below: JCPS 10.5% COMMODITY (REPO) REPURCHASE AGREEMENT Investment Type COMMODITY Vendor Purchaser Minimum Purchase Total Amount of Commodity for Sale Sale/Repurchase period Yield Currency Maturity Date Tax Insurance Offer Period Offer is based on Commodity Sale and Repurchase Agreement Sugar Jamaica Cane Products Sales (JCPS) Investors JA$5,000,000.00 JA$100,000,000.00 Five (5) months 10.5% p.a. JA$ February 2018 No tax withheld Commodity is insured September 4 – 15, 2017 First come, first served

The commodity repo, or repurchase agreement, has a lot in common with the traditional repo. Rather than securities, commodities are bought and sold. Commodities include metals, livestock, and agricultural products, such as coffee and sugar. One commodity repo that we recommend, for instance, is sugar. Generally, the “true sale” nature of commodity repo transactions (i.e. the transfer of title from one party to the other by way of sale, rather than the creation of a potentially unsecured loan obligation) is a key part of these structures. How does a commodity repo work? The sugar producer offers their sugar to a buyer or investor, and during the exchange, the seller agrees to buy back the sugar at a later date at a specified price. This date can vary and may be defined in the agreement, but it is generally short-term. It may be days, weeks, months, or longer. Additionally, the cost of buying back the sugar is higher than the selling price. The difference between the initial selling price and the repurchase price is comparable to accumulated interest. The buyer earns the difference in return. Commodity repos are ideal for investors who want to diversify their portfolios instead of tying up all their cash in long-term investments. Repos are generally fast, simple, and low risk, as commodities are always in demand.

CELEBRATING CULTURE, KINGSTON STYLE

September is a great time to be in Jamaica, especially when it comes to fishing. We have a few ways to celebrate and enjoy the season, including local and national events.

MONTEGO BAY INTERNATIONAL MARLIN TOURNAMENT September 26–30, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day Montego Bay, Jamaica

Games is a live reality competition where contestants compete to be the ultimate Guardsman. An obstacle course inside the zoo takes competitors through monkey bar challenges, wall climbs, rope swings, and barbed wire. This two-day event begins on Saturday with finalists competing through Sunday. If you think you have what it takes, sign up and become the next Guardsman.

Every September, residents and thousands of out-of-town spectators get excited about one fish: the marlin. This is the 56th annual Marlin Tournament, and it is sure to be one of the best yet. Watch world-class anglers reel in the biggest catch. If you enjoy fishing, bring your pole and put a line in the beautiful bay. Even if you don’t, spectating is more than half the fun, and enjoying the catch of the day is a sure way to please the taste buds.

Tourism plays a huge role in the Jamaican economy, and we show our recognition of that during World Tourism Day.
