PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE I would like to bring you up to date on efforts to address the high demand for our indoor tennis facility.The fastest growing program at our Club has been our racquets program and for many years the indoor tennis center, with 3 courts, has been operating at capacity with demand that far exceeds available court time. The racquets staff recently calculated that we have around 400 active tennis players. This number is 30% larger than it was 6 years ago. That's actually great news and highlights an opportunity for Wilmington Country Club to increase member satisfaction and further cement its reputation as the premier country club in the region. In response, in 2016, the Board authorized funding to develop plans and obtain County approval for adding indoor facilities. This difficult work has been quietly progressing and was recently completed. Within the tight space available, it is possible to add two additional indoor courts and a multipurpose court for our growing junior program and Pickleball. The plan would require us to relocate and, unfortunately, reduce the number of grass courts from four to three.We would retain the same number of clay courts. The project would also bring the existing tennis facility, which was constructed 50 years ago, up to code and the standards our members have come to expect at our Club. It is an exciting plan and the Board recently authorized additional funding to develop detailed drawings and construction documents. The obvious down side of the project is cost. Preliminary estimates put the cost over $3.5 million. I can assure you this would not be funded with an assessment or with an unusually high dues increase.The source of funding is routine capital which is generated by a combination of excess revenue over expenses from operations and stock purchased by new members. Therefore, the big variable in the financial feasibility projections is our comfort with the ability to continue to attract new members. What we can all do to make this exciting new facility a reality is to support the membership development efforts. We encourage you to help identify potential new members and promote the idea of joining Wilmington Country Club whenever opportunities arise. A NOTE FROM PHIL As we enter into what we hope will be the waning days of winter and prepare for the upcoming outdoor season, there are no detailed topics to discuss but rather a number of various items that are of a small, yet significant, nature that benefit from sharing. Think of it as my “Spring Cleaning”. As with any “Spring Cleaning”, some items you dust off and retain, others will be discarded because they are no longer necessary or

• We will all be adjusting our clocks (spring ahead) on March 11th. I hope you take full advantage of the longer daylight hours to use the Club into the evening.Weather permitting, we’ll also expand the hours of the Bag Room/ Range as required. • With the mild winter, we have enjoyed several days of “bonus golf ”. In fact, enough has been played on the North Course to necessitate reopening the Snack Bar on the “honor system”. A limited assortment of beverages and snacks are available for members to self-serve and sign. Because it is so early and the risk of a hard freeze is likely, it would be premature to reestablish the water fountains and ball washers. • One of the great privileges of being a member is the ability to utilize your Club’s facilities for private entertaining. If your plans for the year include the opportunity to host a party or business gathering this year, please consider having it at your Club. Our reputation for ease of planning and flawless execution is well known. Let us prove it to you. • Annual, semi-annual and quarterly food minimums come due at the end of the month. In the event you fail to fulfill this obligation, please don’t ask for relief - none can be given. • Your usage of the Fitness facilities has been strong all winter. At times, it could even be considered crowded.To help keep the space safe and organized, please return any exercise devices to their appropriate “home” after use. It is also very important, especially during “cold and flu season”, to use the anti-bacterial wipes before and after using a piece of equipment. • Also in the “health and fitness” arena . . . don’t forget that Massage Treatments are available in the Treatment Room located between the Ladies’ Locker and upper level Men’s Locker Rooms. More information and appointments can be gained by contacting the Fitness Desk. • Sometime this month, the 2018 edition of the Rules and By-laws Handbook will be made available.We will notify all members via email with a link to the online version. Hard copies will be placed in each Senior Member’s locker with additional copies available at the Front Desk for pick- up. Once you receive yours, please take a moment to review it. Knowledge and adherence to the Club’s rules and schedules will enhance your usage of the facility as well as that of your fellow member. As always, thanks for reading and I’ll see you at your Club. Full Tuesday service will resume beginning April 3rd.Towards the end of March, if weather and conditions dictate, there may be some “early openings” in the Bag Room, Hut and/or Pub. These will be communicated in theWeekly Happenings. • We will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on Saturday, March 17th in all areas. All day, we will be featuring traditional Irish favorites (in addition to the regular menu) as well as a special selection of Irish beer.Yes, you can get them green if you insist! Additionally, in the Hut, we will be hosting a special multi-day March Madness Party,Thursday through Sunday, March 15th through 18th. Of course, we will have a bracket competition as well. Details will be shared via email and our social media accounts. • Social Media accounts?? Yup . . . for more than a year, we have been “out there” and the number of members following us is constantly growing. While the rest of the world was in upheaval during the tumultuous days of the early 1970s, family and tradition were very much alive on a bucolic farm in Oakley, California, asValeriano Jacuzzi (yes that Jacuzzi)- one of the original Italian immigrant brothers of spa fame - showed his grandson Fred Cline how to tease magic from the soil. Fred learned, among other things, how to turn grapes into wine ripe with character and intensity, with full and abundant heart. Nancy Bunting, herself the product of pioneer family roots, met Fred when they were both students at UC Davis. They married and began a humble winery in Oakley with Fred's small inheritance. Ignoring the hyped-up wine trends of the day, Fred and Nancy chose to restore acres of 100-year-old vines and produce Rhone-style varietals like Mourvedre, Carignane, Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier.They also planted acres of what would become legendary Cline Cellars Zinfandel. In 1991, Fred and Nancy moved the winery to a 350-acre ranch in the famed CarnerosValley in Sonoma County.There the Clines planted Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. They opened a tasting room in the 1853 farmhouse, and renovated the grounds to highlight the history and pastoral beauty of the property. The Sonoma Coast Series showcases the soil and climate of the area with cooler temperatures and fog filled nights leading to wines of clean, crisp acidity. The Chardonnay exhibits tropical notes and the Pinot Noir is in the delicate style associated with the Sonoma region.The grapes take longer to ripen in the Sonoma Coast region but the wait is well worth the final product. BOOK CLUB Our Tuesday, March 6th selection is J.D.Vance’s bestseller, Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis .Vance was born in Kentucky to a Scots-Irish family who had lived and worked in a poor Appalachian town for generations and whose story provides a close look at the struggles of America’s white working class. Vance’s grandparents moved to Middletown, Ohio, so that his grandfather could get a job working in the steel mills and escape the poverty, but soon the low-paying jobs vanished or offered less security and his grandfather turned to alcohol. Vance’s grandparents loved America, but they were verbally abusive and violent - true hillbillies. His mother could not deal with the poverty she faced and often became violent and abusive, was addicted to painkillers and then heroin, and moved from one husband to another. Vance had fifteen step-dads growing up. The trauma was horrid for Vance who frequently skipped school and got Ds and Fs. Life became more stable when he moved in with his grandmother and later joined the Marines. His support system was his older sister, his grandmother and his desire to make a better life for himself. Amazingly, he defied the odds - he managed to graduate from Ohio State University andYale Law School.

Our April selection, A Piece of the World , is Christina Baker Kline’s fictional memoir of Anna Christina Olsen, the subject of Andrew Wyeth’s painting, Christina’s World.The story is told from Christina’s point of view as she thinks of her own life, played out in a harsh landscape. Through it all, the author’s insightful, evocative prose brings Christina’s singular perspective and invincible spirit to life.

A NOTE FROM GROUNDS

PREPARING FOR SPRING

March is upon us and the winter months have left their mark both physically and psychologically.With our spring juices beginning to flow, project total optimism that this will be the year that March weather will be kind and lend support to some early outdoor golf and tennis. That would also bode well for our Grounds Department activities as we try to get a jump on a wide range of undertakings at the beginning of the season. Even with reasonable support, early month conditions still restrict our access to grounds to only the lightest weight equipment.Toward the end of the month, with plans of accomplishing some more critical processes requiring larger equipment, reasonable

conditions are essential. A typical outline of our intended activities do include:

Complete any off season construction areas including regular bunker maintenance, stump area repairs, select areas of sod repair from winter snow plowing damage, etcetera. 4. Finish Pub patio and regrade grass border area for proper drainage and turf restoration. 5. Initiation of spring fertilization and seeding program for primary rough areas. LATE MARCH 1. Aeration of all turf entities of the South Course, Short Game as well as the Putting Green. 2. Spring rehabilitation of all Clay Tennis courts both traditional har-tru and hydro-courts. 3. Pressurize irrigation system. 4. Prepare South Course for April opening. Early spring can be our most vexing period of the season. Early assessments for March weather may more resemble in like a lion, out like a tiger, with the lamb hiding until sometime in April . All we can do is wait and see.The transition from winter into spring always seems to be a slower process than we hope for and our greatest challenge is sometimes maintaining patience. Though the waiting game with Mother Nature typically proves frustrating, we look forward to the warmer temperatures of late April when we can get back into our daily maintenance routines.

The Golf Learning Center is open with two heated hitting bays for those who would like to get a jump start on the season. MICHAEL SHANK, PGA

Michael’s professional career has reflected continued development to prepare him for this newest opportunity. He will join us having completed ten years as Head Golf Professional at North Shore Country Club on Long Island. Prior to that, he was an assistant professional at Ardsley Country Club in Westchester, NY as well as an assistant at the Chevy Chase Club in Maryland and Jupiter Hills in Florida. Michael has been actively involved in the Metropolitan section of the PGA, serving on various committees and as an officer of the Chapter. He is a graduate of the Professional Golf Management Program at Penn State University. Michael enjoys the reputation of being a strong player and an excellent teacher of the game. He is originally from the Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania and will be joined by his wife Heather and their 7 year-old son Lucas. Although his official start date is yet to be determined, we anticipate his formal assumption of duties sometime in mid-March.

March is a transition month as we wind down the primary squash and paddle season and begin to think about outdoor tennis. Listed in The Bulletin are the weekly tennis and squash activities as well as our last few paddle events for the season. Also highlighted are the junior programs for the upcoming summer season with sign ups opening on March 1st. Junior summer programs will again include sports camps including paddle with Lisa Murray, tennis and squash camps, transition camp which allows junior ages 5-9 to pick their activities and be supervised by our staff without parents being on site. In addition, there will be many junior events and tournaments throughout the summer as well as our adult weekly activities and events.The ladies' Wilmington Cup tennis league begins the week of April 16th. SQUASH NEWS HIGH SCHOOL TEAM SQUASH CHAMPIONSHIPS

Tower Hill School won its first ever National Championship when the THS squash team won the Division 5 High School Squash Nationals in Philadelphia in the beginning of February. Numerous members of the squash team are also members of Wilmington Country Club. Captains Bo Anderson and Ben Schiltz, along with fellow teammates: Jen Cleary, Sean Beberman, Peter Harris, Gaurav Rastogi, Sander Saridakis and Harry Saridakis had a terrific season that came to a very Climactic end. In the Nationals, teams only play 7 players as opposed to 9 players in the regular season, so it wasn’t looking good in the semi finals when the the team was down 3-1 in matches to Greens Farms Academy (Westport CT). in the 5th match, Ben Schiltz won 3-1 an extremely difficult match to keep the hopes alive.Then Sean Beberman who was down 2-0, made a remarkable comeback to win 3-2, which gave Peter Harris the opportunity to win the match for THS. He dominated his match to secure a place in the finals against the Hill School (Pottstown, PA). Although all players were geared up for the finals, THS went down 3-0 early after some tough 4 and 5 gamers.With every match counting, Bo Anderson came up with the first big win, followed by a strong showing from Ben Schiltz. With the score 2-3, Sean Berman again made a huge comeback from 2-1 down to hand the reins to Peter Harris. In perfect fashion, Peter Harris won 3-0 to bring home the Division 5 title.To cap the season off, theTHS team also participated in the Middle Atlantic Squash Association Regional Championships the following week.They defeated Malvern Prep in the first Round, Shipley JV in the Semi Finals, and then beat the Hill School again, to capture the Division 3 MASA title. Congrats to the Team in their third year program.

MEMBER-GUEST SQUASH DOUBLES The Member Guest squash Doubles was held this past weekend here at WCC. We had two divisions with 8 teams in each. There were many exciting 4 and 5 game matches on Friday and Saturday. In Division 2, Damian Dell’Oso and his partner Blake Rohrbacher narrowly defeated Jon Saunders and his guest John Bonnell 15-14, 12-15,15-14, 10-15, 15-12. Numerous long points with some diving gets and stellar winners. In Division 1, after some interesting upsets, Andy Houston and his guest Jason Clare defeated Bo Anderson and guest Jim Zug Jr. 15-6,15-10,15-10. Houston/ Clare had enough winners to satisfy all the players in both divisions in the finals alone. Next year’s event will be held February 22nd-23rd, 2019.
