B espoke; Personal; Tailored; - all of these words continue to be important to both manufacturers and consumers, particularly with the home improvement market. Additionally, Spring is traditionally the time for upgrades and according to recent reports the ‘don’t move but improve’ trend has been buoyant for the last few years. This sector has apparently grown over the last 5 years from 3% to 15% which translates to around 4 million UK households having made the decision to invest. This sector is confident with predictions that it will continue to see growth as the market is driven by consumers looking to invest rather than move. The market trends look set to be defined by greater performance products, colour and a variety of materials that will make bold statements for consumers. Individualising properties is really gathering momentum as homeowners are ready to invest in their dream properties.

In respect of design, there is no clear front runner when it comes to colour choices for windows, doors or conservatories, Green, Grey, in varying shades, and wood foils appear to still be very popular with specifiers, designers and investors. The retail sector is looking healthy with homeowners looking to invest in quality and being more aware of carbon footprints, they have recognised the value in updating their homes. Which bodes well for the installers out there. ON WITH THE SHOW No doubt with the forthcoming exhibitions and events lining up to show the latest in innovations and benefits of product developments, May was a busy month for many. The Construction Expo took place The Arena in Milton Keynes at the beginning of the month with more than 2000 delegates from across the construction sector attending. Hot topics at the show included Brexit, Foreign Direct Investment, Public and Private Housing, Building Materials and of course Sustainability. Skills and

SO WHAT’S NEW? There are some obvious developments in glass manufacturing with modern trends in thin and curved glass products continually evolving. The speed and ability of glass engineering to adapt to demanding markets is quite staggering as bold architectural designs prove. Pushing the boundaries in terms of concepts is one thing, for glass machinery companies to then answer that call with equipment that surpasses its predecessors by leaps and bounds is seriously impressive. Projects that include glass lifts, circular glass staircases, underwater restaurants, biometric capabilities each require their own unique systems to answer the demand for striking design that is also eco efficient and cost competitive.

training was focus for the exhibitors and industry professionals attending with a view to look at future market direction. Grand Designs Live once again reached out to the self build and renovation markets bringing inspiration with new product launches and over 500 specialist exhibitors in London’s ExCel arena. This continues to be a show that attracts a strong footfall and gives visitors access to ideas for all sized projects. Kevin McCloud still continues to draw in the crowds for this one. The FIT show once again promised innovation and ways to improve business for the fenestration sector opening its doors at the NEC. This maintains a high profile for builders, installers and fabricators looking for fresh ideas to help grow their business. The success can be measured by a positive foot-fall and good networking opportunities for everyone involved in the sector.

Architects and designers are becoming more and more adventurous as they look to create artistic statements that provide business and consumer living solutions under huge glass ceilings and within glass walls. The Apple store entrance on Fifth Avenue is a true spectacle that highlights how glass technology and architectural design are inextricably linked. There are tremendous possibilities and the ability to adapt to this glass design market as it emerges is essential for processors to survive. The entrance to the current Apple store is meant to reflect ‘minimalism’ and with the structure comprising three glass panels on the roof and on each face that certainly works. Made up of only 15 sheets of glass it is simplistic and chic - jumbo design in its simplest form perhaps, however, it is breathtaking and bold and people notice it. Reinventing glass as a product continues to inspire architects and designers as they experiment in ways to incorporate it as a visual that can provide not just shelter and warmth but comfort and security. Floors and staircases are modern concepts that have in fact been round for decades - but the ability to make this versatile product work so well in building design now, is down to the glass engineers and their capacity to help turn concept into reality. LOOKING AT THE FUTURE When looking to take a business forward, the terms ‘modernisation’ and ‘development’ are often used but now with the dawn of The Millennial there are new dimensions to consider. Everyone has been forced to alter their perspection in terms of business practices, as rapidly changing technology and greater audience reach are new ‘must haves’ in the business world. The Millennial has taught all of us, and very quickly, that they don’t have time to use methods that take up too much time and this attitude is also changing customer expectation.

The next generation of entrepreneurs have created a new dimension when it comes to value as they have taken digital technology and turned it to their advantage. There is a presumption by the next generation of business owner that research platforms, financial forecasts, medical advice even food orders can always be found at the touch of a button. They attack technical issues differently, becoming part of the solution if there is a problem. They stay on top of things and can hold their entire life in the palm of their hand. They actually expect to be able to have access to any part of their life in a nano-second and leave many of us standing when it comes to using the power of digital technology. Some consider this new business leader lazy, but the older generations are now recognising that efficiency of effort optimises impact and the way to achieve this is via technology. Modern entrepreneurs are always prepared to research what they will need to learn in order to guarantee success, with knowledge and experience overriding qualifications to a degree. If we are to keep pace, we all have to accept that learning is a continual evolution. Garnering infor-mation from someone with experience in the area they are looking to explore is a natural progression for a modern business leader, absorbing experience and stories from trailblazers and industry experts as role models.

NFA WINNERS’ EVENT - CELEBRATING THE SUCCESSES OF THE SECTOR

L ast month saw the industry come together in Doncaster to celebrate the NFA Winners from 2018. The aim of the event is to set the achievement benchmark across the sector which recognises exceptional people, companies and projects in a fair and just way. With more people becoming interested and choosing to be part of the Awards and all they represent, the NFA team is working diligently to fairly recognise success. It also is a viable platform to bring into focus some of the challenges facing the industry and to help create a more positive arena for everyone. As the UK currently faces a substantial skills shortage the Awards offer encouragement and acknowledgement that will help to create a positive impact and will help to kickstart the next generation. This year there were more categories than ever before and voting reached an all time high, proving that the industry is engaged and looking to find ways of sustaining a positive future for the sector. The Awards intend to raise awareness of innovation and technical advancements by bringing into focus the quality standards across the board. Our Award sponsors are also an important part our Winners’ event and by working collaboratively

with them we can highlight the important and very relevant issues. Through these associations we can also share ideas and look at ways in which we can influence changes for the better. April 27th was a day that gave people the recognition they truly deserve and as many said, it was one not to be missed. With all nominating and judging decided by the industry this ensures that the Awards are fair and gave everyone at the event a positive discussion point. In a fiercely competitive market the NFAs help to differentiate companies, products and services as well as the skills of individuals. By being nominated is a recognition as being one of the best in the business. On top of all that there are great marketing opportunities for a company whether as a nominee, winner or sponsor. Nominees have told us that they have gained greater exposure for their business and this provides a great narrative for social media that lasts. Bringing together the best in the industry generates a confidence in the future, with a growing list of high profile attendees, many are enjoying the event as a way to chat and discuss the important topics of the sector, in an informal, social setting.

INTRODUCING MOLLY WATT - OUR NFA CHAMPION

She has worked with pioneering companies including Apple, Sigma and ReSound as they develop technology and items of assistive enabling equipment to help the world communicate effectively with each other. “LiNXQuattro is an incredible technology that has compensated in a positive way for my deafblind- ness more than anything. I’ve said it over and over and cannot stress the importance of this assistive technology it really is the “gamechanger,” Molly Watt. The Molly Watt Trust fundraises for items of assistive technology that can enhance the life of some-body living with Usher Syndrome, which in turn also improves their connection with family, friends and colleagues. Consequently, the NFAs will support Molly on her journey and give her voice a greater reach via the publications and online portals in the form of our new Champions Corner. It is hoped that in raising awareness that this will significantly benefit the charity and help Molly to improve the delivery outcomes she seeks to achieve. Lee Clarke comments, “We are passionate about making a difference and hope that in supporting Mol-ly that she can make an even greater impact, at a global level.” Jason Grafton-Holt concludes, “Everyone at the NFAs wants to help Molly make a real difference to the lives of many people. We will be working with her and tapping into the generosity of the good people in this industry, to help The Molly Watt Trust make a long lasting difference.”

A s we celebrate the successes of the industry at this year’s National Fenestration Awards, (NFAs) the team is looking to further mark this occasion by launching our Champions Corner. Throughout this year we will be bringing into focus The Molly Watt Trust, which is an independent charity set up to support those diagnosed with Usher Syndrome. Usher Syndrome is a progressive condition for which there is currently no cure. Although the disease affects hearing and sight, other difficulties arise such as mobility and communication which can lead sufferers to feel isolated and depressed. Many people diagonsed use hearing aids or cochlear implants to access sound so they can verbally communicate. Yet as the sight begins to deteriorate this creates further issues as visual recognition, such as lip reading and body language indicators, all begin to decrease. We are seeking to support Molly as she builds her charity further in a bid to provide all those diag- nosed with Usher Syndrome, with the right type of hearing aids. The NFAs intends to support Molly and will help her to capitalise upon her passion to create a world that can be improved for those who have been diagnosed with Usher Syndrome.

F irstly I’d like to thank you for allowing me to introduce myself and the Molly Watt Trust at your awards ceremony at Doncaster Racecourse, it was a re-al pleasure. It is hard to convey what we at Molly Watt Trust do in a short time but hope-fully I was able to provide you with the gist of our work. For my first piece I wanted to speak more about the importance of accessi-bility and inclusion in an ever changing world. Assistive technology is often the answer to accessing our world when sight, hearing and mobility are not what they used to be. I am fortunate to have access to the technology I need to live my life, sadly many in my position do not My personal journey living with a both progressive and life changing condi-tion like usher syndrome (deafblindness) has highlighted the real need for change in everyday life and whatever industry we are in we all need to make changes for long term good.

Whilst the condition I live with is rare, my challenges are comparable to the largest growing community - the ageing. I spend as much time as I can with my Grandfather, he is very special to me. I wrote a blog about him a while ago that demonstrates his needs as similar to mine. He has no disability, he’s just getting old and all things be-ing well we will all get there, we all need to make changes now to make life easier long term:

www.mollywatt.com/blog/entry/accessibility- grandad-and-me

In my role as an Accessibility and Usability Consultant I am able to raise awareness of accessible need and solutions in many areas, it is my inten-tion to write about all different areas each month.

A COLOURFUL WAY TO INSPIRE CONSUMERS TO INVEST

P atio Doors, Bifolds, Conservatories and Orangeries are an excellent way for consumers to bring the outside into their home with almost a seamless synergy. And now is the perfect time to remind them. Safe and secure, they guarantee a feel good factor that homeowners find hard to resist when looking to expand or renovate their properties. Equally for the commercial sector, a glass wall looking out onto a picturesque view will create a wel-coming feeling for visitors that they will remember, which many hotels, golf clubs and spa destination owners have fully embraced. Choosing the right exterior style for a building however can prove more difficult with the choice of colours now giving architects, designers and

home owners much more to think about before making their final decisions.

Choosing windows that blend with an architectural design is just one aspect today, with colour now fast becoming as important as the overall look of a property. Whether it is a modern or traditional property there will be a style and colour that will suit the building. Advising homeowners to choose a colour and a look that matches the overall style is well advised if people are looking to sell on the property. Today colours play an important role and help to add true value. Windows can be doors too but the surrounds and their colour will be pivotal to making the design work.

28 NFA DIGITAL MAY 2019

GENERAL

Natural light and shadow both play their part in bringing out the best of a window or glass wall and shades of colour can really help to complement the light of a small or dark room. Demonstrating to consumers the merits of colour in this way really can help to close a deal. Architectural colour can also be an excellent marketing tool. For some businesses for example, incorporating the corporate colours into the business premises helps to reinforce the brand. Colourful frames and accessories can improve the overall appearance of a property, but conservatories and orangeries manufactured in matching colours will ensure a striking finish to extension projects that add real value. Whether frames are made of pvcu, wood or aluminium there are plenty of colours to choose from which will ensure that a property makeover will enhance its appearance. It is advisable to choose col-ours carefully to bring out the best of the whole building with frames and doors all blending to com-plement each other. That said, thanks to technology, pretty much any colour can be applied to window frames if home- owners truly want to make that personalisation statement in a bold way. Two tone colour palettes throughout a property also can be striking with frames and doorways being used to complement

the trim of a home such as the eaves or gable ends. It can be a challenging prospect but it will be a good return on investment if done the right way. Equally glass tints play their part and blending frames to sit alongside high performance glasses has become a popular design concept for architects and designers. Windows and glass entrances are the focal point of any property but the interiors should also be con-sidered, particularly when choosing colours. Some people want a cream or white interior with a bold-er shade of colour or wood foil for the exteriors. The architecture of a home is unique to each indi-vidual and bringing out the best features can be done by highlighting windows, doors and extensions in a variety of shapes, styles and colours. Equally, interiors can mimic exteriors if preferred. With companies such as Kolorseal providing options in virtually limitless choice when it comes to frame colours, there are great incentives out there for new business opportunities. With Spring now here, it seems timely to remind consumers that they have vast choice and great scope to add value by colourising their homes.

A NEW LOOK FOR AVANTEK MACHINERY

I n line with Avantek Machinery's reputation for world class service and excellent customer support, the company is delighted to announce the launch of its brand new website – www.avantekmachinery.co.uk. offering a smooth experience for the user whilst showcasing Avantek’s state-of-the-art machinery ranges and providing fabricators with options which are designed to streamline production processes. TIME FOR CHANGE Launched just in time for the upcoming FIT Show, the Avantek Machinery website boasts a whole host of changes to benefit customers. Now with faster load speed, easier navigation and intelligent search function, the company's site is designed with the visitor in mind - and Digital Marketing Manager, Simone Sangha has spearheaded the change. "The age-old adage of ‘If it isn't broke, don't fix it' couldn’t be further from the ethos at Avantek. Part of the Flamstead Group and the NYSE-listed Quanex Building Products, the company has a well-earned reputation of investing in all the right areas of the business – and its digital platform is no different. Offering a more updated look and feel, the functionality of the new site is focused on Simone commented:

"We live in a truly digital age, where customers prefer to do their product research online before they commit to a decision, whether that’s research on the company itself, or on the various machines we offer. With this in mind, Avantek has revamped its site to provide excellent functionality, faster site speed and even intelligent suggestions for alternative machinery options. “To make it even more accessible for our customers - because we realise not every customer is sitting in an office - the site is, of course, mobile friendly. WHAT TO EXPECT FROM AVANTEK'S NEW WEBSITE The first thing we noticed from the new site is just how different it is aesthetically. Modern, dark and industrial, landing on the website the first impression is that this company is ‘cutting edge’. Diving deeper, the new site is much easier to navigate - there are multiple ways to find the machinery that you're looking for, from a search function to carousels. You can also filter by category, brand or type. For customers looking for more information about specific machines, the site includes a wide range of in-depth machinery videos, including an extensive video about the brand new URBAN Timberweld® welding and milling machines and process.

HELPING THE CUSTOMER

exactly what to expect from the machine they’re interested in simply by giving them a link to click, which will help by saving them time and giving them accurate information at their fingertips.” Simone concludes, "This is only the first phase of the release. We're excited about what is coming later this summer, and we're sure that our customers will be, too." See the new Avantek Machinery site for yourself at www.avantekmachinery.co.uk and keep your eyes peeled for phase two coming later this year.

The new website has also had input from new Sales Director Jamie Munday, who said:

“I arrived at Avantek as the project was well underway, and I’m delighted with the results. For the modern sales team it’s important to have a website where customers can easily find the information they need, and the investment in the new site, especially the new machinery videos hosted on it, will be a huge benefit to the sales process. I’ll be able to show customers

TIMBER OR PVCU THE DEBATE CONTINUES T he desire from homeowners to invest and improve their properties continues, with an unsteady feeling continuing for many

regarding moving home. Inspiring consumers to invest is potentially easier with the idea that new windows and doors can totally transform and add value to a home, particularly if they are biding their time to wait for an opportune moment to sell. Spring is here and it is always a really good time for installers to nudge homeowners with door drops, demonstrating what a new look and added character can bring to a property.

There are still people who have the misconception that double glazed windows have to be pvcu, thinking that timber frames are manufactured with single glazing. The British Woodworking Federation and its members have done a lot to rectify that notion, helping to educate the consumer that beautiful wood windows are possible and will be energy efficient. Another common myth is that timber windows will rot whereas pvcu alternatives do not alter in appearance. Whilst the easy maintenance of pvcu is well recognised by homeowners, it should be clearer that timber frames are a viable alternative with repainting and good care giving them a new lifespan all over again once the job is finished. A renovation project is enhanced by either pvcu or timber frames and both add real value to a property. For any installation or potential project it really will be down to personal choice and budget - but it is important to give a balanced view when talking to prospects and educating them on the fact that wood windows can last for decades and will bring a good ROI that can be transferred when a property is sold.

There is now more choice than ever when it comes to windows and doors leaving many investors still asking the question - which is better? Timber or pvcu? Both PVC-U and timber have their benefits, such as, pvcu providing timber-like appearances and excellent performance for less cost; while timber offers incredible longevity and better environmental aspects when sustainable timber is used. Budget is going to be a deciding factor for those looking to upgrade their homes, while design and style will only play their part once the costs have been confirmed. Today’s modern materials provide exceptional performance advantages either way, giving the end user comfortable temperatures and noise reduction all year round. The demand for improved thermal performance and reduced energy bills will undoubtedly be a factor for a large number of people who see this as a priority. The external appearance of a property is still important and it is something that both those selling and buying should research carefully from looks, to maintenance and added value.

GET CUSTOMISED WITH LINIAR MARKETING M any double glazing businesses, fabricators and installers don't have an in-house marketing team able to design and print brochures, technical documents and advertising materials in order to help generate leads for their company. As the designers of the products themselves, systems companies are ideally placed to be able to produce literature that is not only technically accurate, but looks good too. As part of Liniar's 'Put the customer at the heart of everything we do' mentality, the team solved this problem in 2016 with an easy to use, self-service functionality on their website: Web2Print. Having initially launched its Web2Print service several years ago, the Liniar team listened to customer feedback and decided it was time for an upgrade in 2019. Coinciding with all the new products being launched from the Liniar Design and Development team and the new literature this entailed, this year was the perfect time to release a newly produced version of the programme – which in true Liniar style, has been built from scratch. April 2019 brings with it a fresh, new, modern update to Liniar's Web2Print online system. Customers need no design skills to add their logo and contact details to Liniar literature to make it their own. It's a case of merely uploading a logo file, adding your contact details, choosing how many you’d like to have printed and sending the order off to the printers. Liniar's Marketing Director Sue Davenport explains why Web2Print is essential to customer relationships.

“Unlike other systems companies, we don’t use agencies at Liniar – this means we can produce our own marketing content and literature by working closely with the design team, in order to launch products to market more quickly. Our in-house team is small, and looks after a full range of digital and offline content for not only the Liniar fenestration, building products and outdoor ranges, but all of Avantek Machinery’s marketing too. Although we would love to be able to fulfil individual customer requests for bespoke literature, this would take our focus away from the needs of the wider customer base, and it would be impossible to do so. “That’s where Web2Print comes in. This comprehensive software can be found on the Liniar website under the ‘Customers’ menu. Once registered, we’ll carry out a couple of checks, after which customers can personalise most of our literature range with their own branding, logo and contact details. The service gives installers and fabricators access to everything they need, all ordered direct from a professional printer, who ships the documents directly to them.” The new, updated Web2Print service launched on the Liniar website at the end of April 2019 and is open to anyone fabricating or installing Liniar products. Visitors to Liniar’s stand at the FIT Show in May will also be able to take a closer look at the software before trying it out for themselves.
