Non-Motion Fundamentals
named one of PING GOLF's Club Fitters of the Year!
It’s time to take advantage of the longer days of spring and summer! All Golfers have the extra time and warmer weather to work on their game - on the course, the practice tee and mentally. It’s important to start off a new season with the goal to improve your game, no matter what level of Golfer you are. Act like you’re starting the game of Golf for the first time by going through your equipment and getting your swing checked. Check your clubs to see if your grips are fresh. Look for loose ferrules and rattles in club heads, shafts that may be bent or have nicks or dents and your bag to make sure it is in good shape. Go through your swing mechanics and your thoughts of what you’re trying to do to hit a golf ball square and solid, as we all want to do! To become better “ball strikers” we must become better at our Non-Motion Fundamentals. Start with the grip being the first order of business. Whether you inter-lock or overlap with your grip, make sure that you have practiced the grip, so it becomes second nature and that the club face is in the square position in relationship to your hands and the target. Both hands need to match each other in their position, with the back of the lead hand facing the target and the trailing hand, when opened, also facing the target. Learn what square looks like when you’re standing over the ball. Many Golfers will stand behind the ball before a shot and get their target line but when they actually set up over the ball they will set up crooked, with either their feet, hips, shoulders (or all 3) lined up off the target line. Correct ball position is also very important. It allows you to develop the proper and natural motion of swinging a club. Poor ball position creates poor motion because the ball is too far away or too far back in the stance; these are the most common mistakes in setting up to the ball. Remember these three Non-Motion Fundamentals - Grip, Alignment, Ball Position - and check them the next time you go practice or come in the shop and have professional eyes evaluate at them. It’s a great way to give ourselves a better chance of making a balanced swing at our target!

Now, more than ever, we all need to have a little more patience. Please remember to make sure the hitting area is clear of staff before taking your shot. Many times, a staff member is on a loud machine and cannot hear your verbal warning. The staff religiously looks for golfers approaching, but sometimes they cannot see you clearly. Please wait until a staff member is clear before you hit your shot in their direction. Also, if you play early in the mornings, please play at a normal pace of play. Rushing your round and playing nine holes in less than an hour holds up staff members from doing their morning tasks ahead of play. Once a staff member is caught behind, it dramatically slows them down and can cause a domino effect with groups behind you.

Tennis Tip: Tennis racquets come in varying sizes for both the head of the racquet and the grip. If your racquet is not sized correctly according to your height and weight, it can cause pain in the wrist and tennis elbow. It’s a good idea to go into a store, try out the racket in person, and even have an expert fit you.
For Wednesdays call Jason at 661-717-4217 and Jonni at 714-366-2985 for Thursdays.
