2019 Youth Player Development Award
From 2005 to 2018 the golf lesson structure at SOCC was like most clubs, private lessons with a PGA Professional in addition to some complimentary teaching programs and clinics, consisting mainly of women and beginners. Also we had ladies team play clinics during the team play season. All of the clinics were at no charge and were part of being an equity member. We offered a year-round golf program for junior golfers for a small fee on Thursdays from 3:30pm to 4:30pm. Our junior program included a league for juniors called the ‘Milkshake League’ which consists of nine-holes weekly with the PGA Professionals during the summer months. This junior event was free to our member’s children and became a huge success for us! We were told “We have the best milkshakes in the county!” On Wednesdays at 4pm throughout the year, our junior ‘loopers’ play 4-holes on a part of the course called the Loop. This is a playing lesson with the pros that encourages etiquette, ready golf and proper golf protocol. This is after school fun for the kids and they get a little fitness and golf practice. In 2006, we had only three juniors in our Junior Club Championship. This is when we started the work of improving our junior golf offerings. The goal was to grow our club with

new, motivating golf clinics, activities, tournaments and family fun golf days. The Golf Shop staff has been dedicated to growing the game, from junior age players to senior age players, we work with everyone in the family. Our women and juniors especially, have helped the club grow the number of golfers these last few years. Now in 2019, we see and coach over 100 hundred juniors a week and our last junior club championship had 43 players entered. Our junior clinics and camps have increased significantly in the last 2 years. In 2019 we joined the PGA Junior League with 30 players. From 2017 to the present we have grown to six programs for all lev- els of junior golf, Junior Summer Camp, Junior Golf Academy, Road to Augusta, Milkshake League, PGA Junior Camps, and PGA Junior League. Due to the strength of our junior program we have been awarded the junior development award for having the best junior program in the southern section of the SOCAL PGA. This award is a great recognition for SOCC and our team. Our PGA staff, which includes two PGA class A-1 members and two apprentices each are dedicated to growing the game and providing the best possible experience for all our members. Together we collaborate based on the needs of our golfers. As PGA Pros, we start the conversation! It is our job to direct the students in ways they can play better golf and enjoy the experience more. We have unique tools and skills to accomplish this, including club fitting partnerships with Titleist, Calloway and Ping. We hope that through our program juniors will learn not only golf, but life lessons that will serve them throughout their lives. With the support of the Board of Governors we have created an industry leading junior program. We encourage you bring your kids out so they can observe and give it a try!

It appears that winter is arriving, as the Weather Channel is telling us to expect lows in the 30’s over the next couple of weeks after the Thanksgiving storm. This means our non-overseeded Bermuda grass will continue into dormancy. The next 90 days, December – February the turf grass that was not overseeded will lose its green color. Last year, and again this year, we have been applying turf pigments, a produce that to lightly colors the leaves of the turf grass, this helps the plant hold heat and produce more green pig- ment in the plant. The primary function of using pigments in plants is photosynthesis, which uses the green pigment chlorophyll and several colorful pigments that absorb as much light energy as possible. However, once a plant goes totally dormant in the winter, photosynthesis stops and the turf plant will shut down and go tan in color. This year, we are going to play with some green turf grass paints and see what kind of results we can achieve. In the past, turf paints were very messy and hard to apply. However, newer paints seem to be easier to apply without specialty equipment like the NFL and other sports teams have, normal golf course sprayers are achieving good results. Once the turf goes completely dormant we’ll experiment with the newer paints and document all the results.

Pickleball Clinic - Wednesdays 8:15 - 9am Free clinic! All levels welcome!
Saturday, December 7th 12pm - 2pm
When temperatures change, the plastic pickleball will be affected by hot and cold weather. On a very hot day, many balls will get soft and as a result will not be as lively. In very cold weather, some balls have a tendency to crack pretty quickly. The second major difference is the roughness of the ball. A rougher ball, one that has been played with longer, will feel differently coming off the paddle.
Come out and learn how to play!
If you already know the game, sign up for the Family Round Robin!
