MIYC Member Stars in “Good People” Show runs through Nov. 14 th at the Marco Players

Come see our own Carol Comeaux star as the scrappy Margie Walsh in The Marco Players’ production of “Good People” running now through November 14 th . Set in South Boston, the play follows Margie’s travails when her hard scrabble life is upended upon crossing paths with a high school boyfriend who has escaped “Southie” and made it big time. The play runs Wednesday through Saturday evenings plus Saturday and Sunday matinees. A number of MIYC Members are planning to go to the matinee on Sunday, November 14 th and have dinner after the play. If you’d like to join them, contact Diana Winterhalter at [email protected]. Two Big Boaters Nights Coming up in November and December November and December will be busy months with our “Premier Boaters Night of the Year” on November 17, featuring Charlette Roman, South Florida Water Management District Governing Board Member and the Chair of the Big Cypress Basin Board. Boaters Night on December 1 will be the U.S. Power Squadron - America’s Boating Club, informing our audience about all the services the National and local chapter provide to our boating community, including “Aids the Navigation” surveys, multiple extensive skill and safety courses, and representing the boating community to our government agencies. Our November Boaters Night will be particularly interesting. Since the early 1800’s, Florida politicians were calling the Everglades a “dismal swamp” that should be drained. In 1905, Florida Governor Napoleon Bonaparte Broward (we don’t make this stuff up folks!) strongly called for the draining of the Everglades to make room for growth. In the 1920’s, two huge hurricanes literally blew the water out of Lake Okeechobee, drowning well over 2,400 Floridians, prompting Congress to mandate the diking of Lake Okeechobee by the Corps of Engineers. Following that, the U.S Government, all well-meaning, built miles and miles of drainage canals throughout the upper Everglades. Today, Central Florida water collecting in Lake Okeechobee is now channeled through two major rivers flowing east and west, bringing green algae, nutrients and chemicals. As a result, our water quality is poor, our seagrass has died, manatees are starving, and the earlier work of draining and diverting has starved the 'Glades of their natural flow and vitality. But all this has begun to being rectified! At our Nov.17 program, Marco’s own Charlette Roman, who is very much a part of this effort, will tell you what the State is now doing to clean the waters and restore the natural flow.

December 1 Boaters Night will feature the Marco Chapter of the U.S. Power Squadron – America’s Boating Club.

Squadron Commander Wanda Burson and husband Gene will present the history of this century-old national organization, their very extensive boating skills & safety education program -- both at the Squadron’s Marco Learning Facility, as well as seminars on the water. They also provide our required annual Vessel Safety Checks and

actively monitor and report problems with local “Aids to Navigation” markers (ATONS) to the three government agencies responsible for their upkeep. Many MIYC Club members belong to this highly respected organization. Henry Stanley Rear Commodore

Volunteers are needed to decorate the MIYC clubhouse and exterior. We need men to help carry boxes, climb ladders, and do exterior lighting. Lunch will be provided. Please confirm to Ellie Everitt ([email protected]) if you plan to attend.

Reservations Please! To help Chef and his staff to prepare and deliver exceptional meals and service, we ask that you place your reservation at least three (3) days in advance. For Special Events, we ask that you make your reservations and meal selections (if applicable) three (3) days in advance. Doing so is a tremendous help in making sure we have your choices on hand. As you know, Chef Bob will always honor vegan/vegetarian or special meal requests, but again, please provide that information in advance when making your reservation.

MIYC Book Club 2022 Our MIYC Book Club is alive and well and will be meeting for the 2022 Season - January through May! Our gatherings will be held the LAST Thursday of each month, commencing at 12:00 Noon for social time, then the Selected Book’s presentation will accompany our salad course; table discussions during a booked- themed luncheon (inspired and created by Chef Bob); and wrap- up with a group-wide review of the material. The first meeting is on January 27 th and the book selection is a “classic” by Doris Kearns Goodwin entitled Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln. Our “Back by Popular Demand” presenter is Kevin Hennessy , who last year gave us an outstanding insight into and background of Winston Churchill, based on Erik Larson’s The Splendid and the Vile. We will no doubt be treated to an informative and entertaining presentation and discussion with Team of Rivals. Please plan to join us. Bring your friends. MIYC's Community Relations As you may know, we as members of MIYC support many community organizations. In the past we were part of the Living Reef Project for Marco Island and Goodland, and we continue to support: Marco Island Youth Sailing Program Marco Patriots Flags for our Heroes (sponsored by Noon Rotary) Toys for Tots Our Daily Bread Food Pantry For the Love of Cats Our focus for November and December is going to be on our Annual Toys for Tots Program. Though COVID is still with us, Toys for Tots will again be able to collect toys for those in need in our area. They have expanded the program to include gift cards to needy families for food. The need in our community is now stronger than ever for donations during this holiday season. The Salvation Army already has 50% more applications for help this holiday season. If you would like to donate with a check, you can make your check payable to The Salvation Army with Naples Cheer Program in the memo. You can give your check to our Reception Desk to the attention of Vicki Bretthauer. We will be sending donations from the Club to the Salvation Army after our Ugly Sweater Contest on December 3 rd . If you really want to shop, we will have bins available for the new toys that you purchase in our lobby starting on November 16 th , the day of our Annual Meeting. Those bins will be delivered to Toys for Tots on December 8 th . Of course, as usual, we will be ‘passing the boot’ at the Annual Meeting, our Shopping Event at the Ship’s Store on November 19 th and on December 3 rd at Ugly Sweater. Some of us will do the shopping for you! Last year we collected over $5,000 for Toys for Tots. Let us hope we can break our own record! Mariners Fund 20 th Anniversary Commemorative Engraved Brick Fundraiser

To celebrate the Marco Island Yacht Club’s 20 th Anniversary, the Mariners Fund is offering members an opportunity to contribute engraved commemorative bricks that will become part of the courtyard walkway linking the Clubhouse to the new Riverside Marina. Your $150 contribution for each 8” x 8” brick enables you to customize the brick to show your support of the Club. Add your name and year you joined the Club or remember friends or loved ones. All bricks will include the MIYC burgee logo, and you can add up to five lines of text, 18–20 spaces per line. Be sure to ordera commemorative bricknow so that it can be engraved and ready for the walkway construction this summer. Order forms are available at the Club reception desk. Getting to Know You Our Marina Accounting Administrator Debbie Rhattigan

Debbie was born and grew up in Jackson, Michigan. She earned her BBA in Business Administration from Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Michigan. She has lived in Jackson, MI, Pittsburgh, PA, Ann Arbor, MI, Naperville, IL, and now Marco Island, FL. Debbie and her husband T. J. Rhattigan have three sons: T.J. III, (29) Chicago, Illinois, Joey Rhattigan (27) Chicago, Illinois, and Jon Rhattigan (22) Seattle, Washington.

Debbie’s prior job experience includes administrative roles with the central region management team of Toyota and Lexus Financial Services in Chicagoland. Sales reporting, insurance reporting, agendas, itineraries, budgeting, executive meeting planning, event planning, vehicle walkarounds, etc. In addition, she was the Community Relations Ambassador, organizing events/volunteers for non-profit organization outreach programs throughout the Chicagoland area. (Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago & Elgin, First Look for Charity – the benevolent event of the Chicago Auto Show, Special Olympics Unified Cup, Together We Rise, Turning Pointe Autism Foundation, TFS Thanks Teachers initiative, and facilitated a Financial Empowerment Workshop at her boys’ high school, Neuqua Valley, to name a few.) She considered it a great experience to be the Central Region Brand Energizer Team Lead, (liaison with TFS corporate) in which she managed twelve brand energizers representing their dealer sales and service office throughout the central region, ensuring strategic messaging was being promoted within each of the twelve offices. How does your day unfold? “I begin the day with a quick Vespa ride to the MIYC. If you see a red Vespa out in the parking lot, more than likely, it belongs to me. Upon arrival, I walk upstairs to the accounting office, take a deep dive into where I left off the day before, grab a cup of coffee, then start the day with a clean slate. Taking phone calls from members, addressing vendors, MIMA shared resources, mastering the NorthStar

Club management system, and monitoring the progression of the new Riverside Marina makes my day purposeful and rewarding. Within the next year, I’m looking forward to working with the marina team to best serve our wet slip members and become a “champion” of the new and exclusive Riverside Marina. How do you spend your spare time? “Since we moved to Marco Island (full-time) over a year ago, my husband & I enjoy walking/running Residents’ Beach and boating/fishing the waterways around Marco Island. You’ll also find us riding bicycles, playing tennis and entertaining our family and friends when they visit this beautiful island. A fun fact is that I have run three marathons (Pittsburgh, Detroit & Chicago), competed in several sprint triathlons and have finished one Half-Ironman.” “On weekends, I’m probably traveling to football games. All three of my sons played collegiate football (Penn State, LB; Princeton, RB; Army-West Point, LB) so we’ve been touring college stadiums since 2011. We’re still chasing football games as my youngest son, Jon, is in his rookie season with the Seattle Seahawk organization, #59. “ What is your favorite vacation spot or dream location? “Our family has chosen many different US destinations for vacationing along with trips to Portugal and Ireland. Penn State played UCF (football) at Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland, and that remains one of our favorite destinations. Another favorite was Marco Island, so, here we are…full-time residents now.” What is your personal motto? “Be your best!” has been a personal motto of mine for years. As my children were growing up, before they would run out the door, it was my hope that just those three simple words would resonate with them and they would always strive to be their best. Chairman Things have really been hopping around the Club! We are seeing more interest in banquets and members are returning from 'up North' and even from outside the US. We are also still seeing strong use of the club by reciprocals. The calendar if full and if the first few events are any indication, we are going to have a very fun-filled and busy year! The November calendar has a lot of activities listed. We also have the christening of the Marina and our November membership meeting. And, of course, the Thanksgiving dinner on the 25th. I am also impressed by the number of 'special interest' events on the calendar like couple’s golf, and the fishing club. There is certainly no lack of activities for our members!

During November, we will be concentrating on wrapping up all the project work related to the new Marina. By the time you read this, the Marina should be operational. LCEC turned on the power on the 24th of October. The electricians and plumbers are wrapping up final connections the last two weeks of October and the contractor was focused on finishing amenities like installing the dock boxes, trash containers, etc. The landscaping work will be completed during the month. I believe when you see the 'final product', you will be as enthusiastic about that part of the project as I am. Thanks to Geoff Walker for managing all the activities associated with this part of the project. Geoff has also managed the upgrade of our internet access and Wi-Fi for the docks. When completed in November, we will have fiber optic support to the Club and a Wi-Fi system and security camera system for the dock that is as near to 'state of the art' as you might imagine. The upcoming Membership meeting on the 16th will be a celebration of the accomplishments during 2021 and a great look at what the future might be for our club. We have signed up to have an exclusive access to Freedom Boat Club for our members. We intend to have one or two boats to start which Club members who belong to our Freedom Boat Club group can utilize. We will be showing a concept for upgrading the Clubhouse to solicit member interest in the project. And we will highlight the re-opening of the Ship's Store. With the new marina and the number of individuals moving to Florida either full time or part time, we have also seen a significant up-tick in our membership. When you come to the Club and see a face you don't recognize, be sure to introduce yourself and make the new members feel welcome! The upcoming season is shaping up to be one of our most exciting ever. I hope that you are looking forward to the coming year with as much excitement as I am.

Dear Members, As we move into the 2021-2022 season there are a lot of positive things going on at the Club. Foremost, we have many new members whom I hope everyone is as excited about as I am -- to meet and welcome aboard, just as we celebrate the opening of our new Riverside Marina and the beautification of our Club grounds. As happens with every new season, your Bridge is busily planning many on-the-water events, such as the Change of Watch and Commodore’s Ball, the Blessing of the Fleet, the annual Nautical Scavenger Hunt, interesting and informative Boater’s Nights, Sunset Cruises, Day Cruises, and Extended Cruises. Whether you’re a seasoned member or new to the club, we encourage you to join in the fun! Keep an eye on the MIYC calendar, watch for your eBlast invitation, then sign up for all there is to come in this special year ahead.

Member Events

Member Events at the Club are in high gear, and the attendance has been a sell-out. The Welcome Back Monster Mash on October 30, was a grave-yard smash with costumes both scary and clever. There were ghosts, goblins, and unexplained noises all adding up to a fun night of dancing and games. The Club song led by Tom Wentworth with accompaniment by Jim Rich opened the evening. This was followed by a trio of Ghostbusters called in to save the members from unearthly screams and unwelcomed guests. Alice Jobe, MA Harlacker, and Patti Cohen were the dancers who saved the night. A Monster Mash Dance-off and a game of Monster Musical Chairs rounded out the night. Prizes were given for games and best costumes. This is only the start of the season. The Fla-Mingle Progressive Dinner was a perfect way to meet new members on October 16. No doubt we will schedule another such dinner later in the calendar year. Members showed up in style with hat and gloves for the High Tea on October 28, proving the English have competition from the Yacht Club. In November, Thanksgiving Dinner is a bountiful treat so make your reservations early. On November 27, the Saturday evening following the Holiday, is "Cheeseburger in Paradise", a chance to bring the visiting family to the Club for casual dining and entertainment. All this and boating events...tours of Marco Island by yacht; sunset cruises; extended cruise to Key West and just about anything you can think of to make your calendar filled to the brim with fun. Thanks to all of you who attended our Progressive Fla-mingle Dinner on Saturday October 16th! I do not know when I have had more fun! All the feedback is positive, so with hope we will do this monthly or at least quarterly. Know that you can always sign up for our traditional Fla-mingle Table, offered weekly. If you are not familiar with our Fla-mingle Table, it provides an opportunity to meet folks over dinner in an “open seating” style on Friday Evenings. If it becomes really popular, we hope to offer this type of table as an option for all dining. It is not a “progressive” dinner where you change tables between courses. We are working on a way for you to reserve your place at the Fla-mingle Table through the new website. We are having a picture contest with our Membership to get photos on the website! Those with photos in the alphabetical group with the highest percentage of pictures by November 15 th will receive a ticket for a free drink! No, it does not sound like much but it sure is a fantastic way to meet members! Have some fun with it. The alphabetic groupings are: A – C D – I J – M N – R S – Z . So, find those folks in your group who need to have a picture loaded! Also, we are kicking off our Social to Full Upgrade “Sail” a little early this year as the Day Cruise for Social Members is November 15 th to Dolphin Tiki. If you are interested in upgrading to Full from the Social Membership Level, please contact me or Cynthia Hultquist, our Membership Coordinator, and we will share the “Sail” with you! If you are new to the Club, you will soon learn that my favorite part of this column is to introduce you to new members and those members who are upgrading! So, here we go! First, Anne & Sam Roberts , some of our newest members, upgraded to Equity at the Fla-mingle Dinner. Ron & Jane Meyering joined us as Equity Members in early October. Brad & Tanya Henderson joined us as Full Members from MIMA the end of September. Other new Full Members include Garland & Bettye Kight with MRM from the McCabes and the Winterhalters, Christian & Eileen Pinsonault and Derrick & Cynthia Fairbanks . Due to COVID, we are also having something fun occur; there are twenty-somethings working fromMarco and residing with their parents, so we welcome younger members from the Bauwens, Kimbles, Meyerings and Pinsonaults. Please be sure to go up to introduce yourselves to anyone whom you do not recognize! Or, better yet, be sure to add your photo to the roster so that everyone will know your name! CHEERS! Marketing & Communications Have you checked out our new website? It debuted August 1, and many members have commented on how nice it is! Some of the advantages: 1. Each member now has their own login. 2. Calendar with all events listed and you can make a reservation right from the calendar for social events. Reservations open 45 days in advance of the event. To help the staff, we ask that you place your Event Dining reservation at least three (3) days in advance. 3. When you login, there’s an announcement section (check there for news!) and a listing of upcoming events. 4. There’s a separate tab for dining that indicates the hours we’re open for lunch and dinner, the menu(s), dress code and more. 5. There’s a My Reservations Tab, where you can make reservations for dining and/or social events, and check on future reservations. I would like to ask a favor: If you haven’t already done so, please login and check your personal info. We would like everyone to: • add an individual picture of yourself (if you have trouble, you can send the picture to Vicki ([email protected]) • update your personal information, including contact info (phone #, address(es), etc.) • update your birthdate (the year will not be visible to other members but will help the club have good statistical information). If you don’t enter a year, your age will be reflected as “0” ! ! Know that any changes you make to your information has to be reviewed and accepted by Membership, so only input your changes once. Wait a few days and your update should appear. Hopefully, by the time you are reading this article, the App will be available! You'll be able to make a dinner reservation, check upcoming events, check your statement, and more - all from your phone! These enhancements came at just the right time as Governor DeSantis’ Office recently announced that the Naples area had the largest jobs increase over the past year compared to all other metro areas in the state! Not surprisingly, most of the job growth was in the hospitality and leisure industry. We remain in stiff competition for quality staff, and an enhanced employee benefits package will help us retain and recruit. Speaking of recruiting, we had great success this past month. Allergy and Sinus Issues Just like the Philistines with Samson, the cold and flu season is now upon us. The last Anchorlines article discussed vitamins and minerals helpful for the immune system; its reading might, in itself, even be useful for insomnia. Our pharmacies offer a bevy of remedies for allergy, cold, and flu and it seemed useful to have a brief review to sort out some of these. First: a quick note on common conditions. We all know that catching the common, “cold” has nothing to do with outside temperature but probably reflects a combination of cramped indoor conditions with people in close proximity as well as the seasonal drop in vitamin D due to less sun exposure. These are due to non-influenza viruses that cause most upper respiratory illness. Hallmarks of a viral syndrome include its symptoms throughout the body: nasal congestion/runny nose, the scratchy throat, cough, body aches and headache. Various influenza viruses cause actual influenza, or the, “flu”. This condition involves more severe symptoms, also involves the lower airways and lungs, and has a longer recovery period. Patients with lung, diabetes, or other conditions can even develop pneumonia with surprising mortality. Allergies, in contrast, occur largely through our over-reaction of our immune system to allergens such as pollen, pet dander and the like. We have all had the itchy eyes and throat, nasal blockage and mucus, and even cough. The medical profession has long been guilty of over– prescribing antibiotics for bronchitis and sinusitis. The common cold should improve by seven days and resolve in fourteen. Bacterial sinus infection is suspected for longer duration or if symptoms initially improve and then clearly worsen. Bronchitis is an inflammatory process of the lungs and airway; 95% is viral. Fever over 100.4 F, rapid heart rate/breathing, and abnormalities beyond wheezing when listening to the lungs indicate the need for a chest X-ray which differentiates bronchitis from bacterial pneumonia. Below are some common categories of medication used for allergy and other respiratory symptoms. Most are available by themselves as well as in combination with other drugs. Labeling can often be misleading and suggest side effects that a drug seeks to avoid. Coricidin HBP Maximum Strength Cold & Flu Day indicates a lack of a decongestant (which can raise blood pressure and cause insomnia). Oral decongestants (over-the-counter) These reduce nasal mucus membrane swelling by vasoconstriction/temporarily reducing the size of blood vessels. Side effects included rapid heart rate, elevated blood pressure, diminished appetite and difficulty sleeping. They can cause shakiness

medication for attention deficit disorder. Patients with hypertension or cardiac conditions should clear these through their physician. Antihistamines (over-the-counter) Allergy symptoms occur in large part due to overreaction of the immune system with exposure to allergens such as animal hair and pollen. Various cells release histamine, which probably causes most of the typical nasal blockage/drainage, itchy eyes and other symptoms. These drugs have been divided into first-generation (older medications) and second-generation. Common first-generation trade names include diphenhydramine (Benadryl) and chlorpheniramine (Chlor-Trimeton). They work as well as newer alternatives but require more frequent dosing and often cause significant sedation. Their second-generation counterparts historically have included Zyrtec (sedating in 13% of people), Allegra, and Claritin. Xyzal and Clarinex are modifications of Zyrtec and Claritin, respectively that were essentially created once the original patents expired. These medications block the cell receptors to which histamine attaches; they work best taken prior to allergen exposure. Azelastine (Astelin) and Olapatadine (Patanol) are topical antihistamines available both as eye drops and nasal sprays. The ocular preparations work very quickly for itchy, swollen, and watery eyes due to allergy. Some people find they have a particularly bitter taste. Leukotriene inhibitors (prescription) Histamine represents the most important allergy mediating chemical among many others. Leukotrienes can often provoke symptoms and montelukast (Singulair) block their effects in a manner similar to antihistamines. These are generally used if other medications prove ineffective in controlling allergy symptoms and are not commonly prescribed. Nasal steroids (over- the-counter and prescription) Corticosteroids reduce inflammation through a variety of causes. These neither make one look like Arnold Schwarzenegger or Dolly Parton. Some patients have had a seasonal, “allergy shot” of a long-lasting steroid that provides relief during specific and particularly bad allergy seasons. Nasal steroid sprays have proven very effective for controlling nose symptoms. Unlike antihistamines, decongestants, and other medications, they must be used both on a regular basis through one’s allergy season and started in advance. All sprays should be applied to the outer wall of the nasal cavity, rather than the septum running down the middle (which can cause irritation and nose bleeds). One should aim the spray toward the outer corner of the eye on the same side: the outer corner left eye for the left nostril and vice-versa. These have not shown any

Nasal decongestant sprays (over-the-counter) These function in similar manner as the oral decongestant sprays and shrink down nasal mucus membranes by constriction of the blood vessels. They offer rapid relief of nasal blockage and mucus production, but their use should be limited to three days or less. Nasal tissue can become accustomed to their use and require progressively more frequent dosing. Oxymetazoline (Afrin) has longer benefit with less risk of addiction. Phenylephrine (Neosynephrine) is less desirable and can raise blood pressure in susceptible individuals. Nasal anticholinergic spray (prescription) Ipratropium (Atrovent) works specifically for reducing mucus production but does not address blockage/stuffiness. The stronger formulation (0.06%) can be used for the common cold. The half strength works for an unusual condition called vasomotor rhinitis. This occurs more often in older patients – particularly men. A classic presentation is embarrassing runny

nose predictably associated with eating. Mast cell stabilizer spray (over-the-counter)

Cromolyn nasal (NasalCrom) works differently than the above. It stabilizes immune mast cells and prevents them from releasing histamine and other allergy-related chemicals. It offers an alternative or additive medication to nasal steroids although is not used that often. Mucus-thinning Drugs (over-the-counter) Guafenesin (Mucinex) This thins mucus although its exact mechanism remains elusive. Thinner mucus may be more effectively cleared with coughing. It also appears to reduce excess sensitivity of cough- stimulating receptors in the airway mucus membranes. Cough suppressants Narcotics (hydrocodone, codeine) offer perhaps the most effective cough suppression when all else fails and act via receptors in the central nervous system. Dextromethormphan (Robitussin, Delsym (over-the-counter) is chemically similar to narcotics although its mechanism of action remains uncertain. Benzonatate (Tessalon Perles – prescription) numbs stretch receptors in lung and airway passages to make them less sensitive. Avoid breaking Benzonatate gel caps when taking as it can cause mouth and throat numbness. Additional information from Stat Pears from the National Center for Biotechnology Information: 1. The Welcome Back Monster Mash party was quite a smash. With more than 125 attendees, the Members wore costumes befitting the scary night. The Harbour Room was decorated with cob webs, spiders and skeletons including a smoke machine to enhance the mood. The entertainment included a rendition of the club song with Tom Wentworth accompanied by Jim Rich on the bongos; a trio of Ghostbusters ( Alice Jobe, MA Harlacker and Patti Cohen) who came to our rescue; a Monster Mash Dance off; and a spine- chilling game of Monster Musical Chairs under the direction of Jim Rich. Next month, there will be a full page of photos.

High Tea @ MIYC Thursday, October 28 in the Harbour Room rue to High Tea at he Ritz, attendees donned their hats and fine attire for this elegant event. There were so many great hats you almost thought you were at the Derby. MIYC’s Community Outreach Recently, Our Daily Bread Food Pantry shared news of their first quarter: The Food Pantry had a wonderful 1 st Quarter 2021. They served an average of 15,000 guests per month via up to ten different outreaches per week – a 400% increase over 2020 ! Thanks to faithful and cheerful giving, (it must be cheerful giving when our Heroes give for months without being asked), our first quarter ended with donations at 104% of budget. The ongoing support from our community’s civic, social, and religious organizations continues to be inspiring. For this Spring Appeal, they had a $60,000 matching gift to double the impact of the donations! As they grow, so do their needs. Covid’s impacts are now showing up in greater food costs and a reduction in food donations. They trust in our ongoing generous support and the tireless efforts of an amazing group of volunteers. Together with their volunteers, they are working to wipe out hunger. The basket for Our Daily Bread Food Pantry donations is in the MIYC lobby so feel free to drop off items any time you are coming to the club.
