PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

PRESIDENT GaryW. Ferguson

VICE PRESIDENT Melissa Riegel

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank a few of our members that have generously given their time participating in leadership positions and on the Board of Directors over the last few years. These individuals have put in many hours on our behalf in an effort to see the Club thrive and stay true to our mission. We are so fortunate to have members that are so engaged and active in making Wilmington Country Club the incredible place it is. All four will be concluding their service as Directors of our Club after serving three successive terms spanning six years. Each has been actively involved in our club’s leadership, and have fulfilled other specific roles with distinction. • Richard D. During that time, he also served on the Golf Committee and Membership Development Committee for two years, the Executive Committee for three years and the Nominating Committee for four years. • Brinton Detwiler served on various committees beginning in 2015 with Strategic Planning. Following that, she served one year on the Junior Orientation Committee, two years on the Young Members Committee and three years on the House Committee, two years specifically as the House Chair. In 2018, she was the Strategic Planning Chair and a three-year member of the Executive Committee. A NOTE FROM PHIL

Autumnal Greetings! Without a doubt, activity starts to slow during this month, but I’ve never understood why. Fall is a great time to use your Club . . . perhaps the best. The heat and humidity of summer are a distant memory. The golf courses are renewed from Mother Nature’s summer assault and tennis gets to enjoy the final days to play outdoors. When you check the various sections of this Bulletin, you will see that there is a full complement of Men’s and Ladies’ activities in store. So don’t put those clubs and racquets away yet - the season is far from over!

I also have a number of incidentals to share with you this month. Each applies to someone - read on to see if it is you:

• There are a number of great golf events in October. The Member-Member; The final Men’s Member-Guest; Glow-Ball; and theWomen’s 18-Hole and 9-Hole wrap up events are all scheduled in the first half of the month. Consider joining in the fun! • One of the reasons we have enjoyed a great golf season is due to the change in the aerification schedule that left the courses undisturbed. The process will begin on the North Course, Monday, October 21st and will take most of the week. Please plan accordingly. • A fall favorite “Oktoberfest” menu will be served in the Grille/Tavern the week of October 7th. (Regular offerings will still be available.) • Outdoor dining on the patio will close on Sunday, October 27th. Buoyed by outstanding weather, your support of the area has been wonderful. (Did you notice that bees haven’t been an issue this year?) Enjoy it until then! • Also closing for the season will be the Golf Course Snack Bars.Their final day of operation will be Sunday, the 27th. • On Sunday, October 13th, we are holding the Annual Family Fall Festival. This year, all the traditional fun, food and games will be expanded to include our first ever “equipment crawl”.We will be bringing up some of our large mowers, tractors, and loaders from Grounds for kids of all ages to “explore”. • Also in October, the very popular Junior Halloween Party andTeen Event is scheduled for Friday, October 25th. • At the end of the month, onWednesday the 30th, our version of a Brazilian Steakhouse returns to the Dining Room. This is one of the membership’s favorite specialty nights. Please make plans to join us. • Now is the time to book Holiday parties. We still have a number of excellent dates available. Give us a call. • Speaking of Holidays,Thanksgiving is right around the corner.Plan on spending yours with us. Each year, attendance has grown so it is advisable to make your reservations early - particularly if you’ll be hosting a “gathering”. • Please remember to complete and return your proxy for the annual election of the Board. This year, you also have the option to reply electronically (look for the email). The Annual Election of the Stockholders will be held Thursday, November 21st at 5:30 p.m. • As we move into the indoor tennis season, please be reminded that due to construction and work to improve lighting and life safety aspects of the existing courts, there may be times when the number of available courts is reduced to two.We will communicate when this occurs via the Club app (another reason to download and join). • And about the construction project - Golfers please do not cross over the black fencing on #10-N to retrieve a ball.Tennis players are asked to please observe and respect the “off limit” areas defined by signage, barriers and fencing. This is for your safety. October also marks the time when many members begin the annual migration to warmer climes for the winter. We hope you have had a great season.Travel safely, stay healthy and we look forward to your return. For those who remain . . . I look forward to seeing you at the Club! Phil Iannelli G eneral M anager

BOOK CLUB Our Tuesday, October 1st selection, Michelle Moran’s fascinating and historically accurate novel Nefertiti, brings ancient Egypt to life in vivid detail. Nefertiti and her younger sister, Mutnodjmet, have been raised in a powerful family that has provided wives to the rulers of Egypt for centuries.Ambitious, charismatic, and beautiful, Nefertiti is destined to marry Amunhotep, an unstable young pharaoh. It is hoped that her strong personality will temper the young ruler’s heretical desire to forsake Egypt’s ancient gods. From the moment of her arrival in Thebes, Nefertiti is beloved by the people but fails to see that powerful priests are plotting against her husband’s rule. The only person brave enough to warn the queen is her younger sister, and yet remaining loyal to Nefertiti will force Mutnodjmet into a dangerous political game that could cost her everything she holds dear. Join us at 4:00 pm on October 1st in the Ladies’ Lounge as Diana Lopez helps us follow the passion and intrigue these two siblings generate as well as the sibling rivalry that motivates them. For November, we have chosen Delia Owen’s beautiful debut novel, Where the Crawdads Sing. It is both a lyrical poem to the natural world and a heartbreaking coming-of-age story. No wonder it has been on the bestseller list for months.

MEN’S SEPTEMBER MEMBER GUEST TOURNAMENT Congratulations to the team of Damian Dell’Oso, Roy Longanecker, John Huynh and Jeff Strzelcyzk for their win in the September Men’s Member Guest. Their foursome fired a wonderful quota score of +4, winning by three shots over the second place team led byTommy Burke. Steve Lucas took third place with his team, while Mark Aitken and his foursome were fourth. Full Member Guest results and team pictures from the day are available HERE. MEN’S SENIOR STROKE PLAY Randy Mitchell won the Senior Stroke Play Championship for the third year in a row with a seven stroke victory overTom Humphrey. Mr. Mitchell fired rounds of 71-75 on the North and South courses to clinch the title. In the Super Senior Division, Pete Fitzpatrick played some excellent golf.  His two-day total of 163 matched last year’s winning score set by Leigh Johnstone, and give him the title of Super Senior Champion for 2019. WOMEN’S FALL HARVEST GUEST DAY Our Women’s Guest Day was held on a beautiful fall day with plenty of sunshine. The team of Cathy Lucas, Kathy Pila, Danielle Carroll and Carolyn Mendez came out on top, winning the low net prize. Jan Hobbs, Lois Erb, Nancy Jones and Joy Dannenberg took low gross.

NINE HOLERS CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP The course was dry and fast, but scores were low for the Nine Holers Club Championship. Tiny Mulvena who lost last year on a scorecard playoff, found redemption in 2019 as she edged Marilyn Pennella by one shot to win the First Flight. In the Second Flight, Judy Orth won by 7 shots over second place finished Kathy Perry.

A NOTE FROM GROUNDS October is a transitional month for maintenance activities throughout the property with fall leaf colors peaking and mowing operations turning to leaf collection. Outdoor maintenance activity in racquets moves from the clay/grass tennis courts to squash and paddle. An important maintenance item to be aware of this month is our North Course Aerification scheduled from October 21st through 23rd.The course will be closed during this time and hopefully Mother Nature will help our team finish this procedure in a timely manner.

An agronomic change from past years involves the practice tee and our off-season maintenance procedures. In May and June, the rear tee and main tee, were sodded with Bermuda grass, more specifically, a cultivar of turf named Latitude 36. This strand was developed at Oklahoma State for winter hardiness and is used as a turf-type throughout the mid-Atlantic region on sportsfields and golf courses. It is predominately used on golf courses in our area for practice areas. During the month of September, our staff over- seeded these tees with ryegrass. The ryegrass will help protect the Bermuda grass during the winter, but we will also employ the use of a winter cover, similar to the picture on the left.

The cover will be left in place for the majority of the winter season. When air temperatures reach a certain level, approximatley mid-50s, we will pull the tarp and replace it towards the end of the day.The purpose of the tarp is to keep the Bermuda grass in a dormant state and not allow it to freeze for too long of a time frame.

The closure of the grass tees will be dictated upon growth. This year, we can expect this to occur sometime around October 13th, but with good weather can be extended an additional week or more.

A popular topic over the last few weeks has been regarding the Spotted Lanternfly, pictured above left and right. We have fielded a number of questions regarding this pest and have seen these intruders recently, most notably, near the tennis construction project and the 15th hole of the North Course.

In September, the Delaware Department of Agriculture expanded the quarantine area to include all of New Castle County north of the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal.

We are coming upon an important time of scouting for this pest as they will lay egg sacks on any flat surface, from tree bark and trunks to automobiles. We are closely monitoring for this pest and will do everything in our capabilities to curtail the spread. This is a very invasive insect that has the ability to be detrimental to all forms of plant life and affect the quality of human life. “Locating and destroying any adult lanternflies now, and the egg masses created this fall, will reduce the population that hatches out in the spring.”

Please refer to the upcoming event section inThe Bulletin so you can take advantage of all the racquets events that are happening in October and the rest of the year. We hope that you will join us on Friday night October 4th to participate in our Pro tennis Exhibition and Fall Tennis Invitational. Eight top pros from the area will compete in a jai- alai format with wagering on your favorite team and dinner. Sign up of foretees or in the Racquet Shop. On October 25th we will host our annual Junior Halloween Party andTeen Event. Juniors ages 5-11 can come to the indoor tennis courts in their favorite costumes and play games for prizes. A separate teen event will be held in the squash building for juniors ages 12-17. We will offer learn to play opportunities for anyone interested in learning tennis, squash or paddle this season. We hope to see you on the courts. OBSERVATIONS FROMTHE US OPENTENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS This past September I had the opportunity to observe a lot of tennis at the US OpenTennis Championships in New York because of my involvement with the US Tennis Association at the national level. I would like to share a few general observations from watching both singles and doubles at the highest level. In doubles more of the top players are serving out wide on the deuce court. This heavy slice spin serve draws their opponent off the court and allows the servers net partner to pick of many volleys for winners. Secondly the server’s partner at the net is standing closer to the center line than towards the sideline. This allows them to poach more easily and distracts the returner and doesn’t allow them to get their return grooved. Baseline players are hitting the ball more down the line not necessarily in the alley but right at the net player. Lastly when a team approaches the net baseliners are getting the ball lower at the net persons feet to allow the opposing net player to pick off a volley or the baseliner to take the next ball out of the air for a winner. In singles more players are using the drop shot. By hitting forcing deep groundstrokes and moving players around the court the front court is now more open for hitting drop shots. Everything now is about taking the ball earlier and taking time away from your opponent. If you are able to move your opponent to one side of the court and the next ball comes back short players are taking the ball on the rise or at the peak of the bounce. By hitting the ball to the opposite side before the player has time to recover players are taking time away from their opponent. Tennis is clearly a moving sport. The best movers are the best players. Pro tennis players are taking 12-16 steps in between each shot while recreational players take 6-8 steps. Keep your feet moving throughout the point and we might see you at the US Open. FITNESS START A NEW CANDY CULTURE THIS HALLOWEEN!

PERSONAL TRAINING Our Fitness Staff is on site with our group exercise instructors and personal trainers. Members can schedule a personal training session with any of our personal trainers: Rick Howard, Corey Ryan, Chris Weiss, Krysta Lafferty, and Beth Sheehy.

Can you imagine kids coming back from trick-or-treating with containers full of fruits and veggies? They sneak fruit before bed! Beg for more veggies before dinner! You feel responsible for modeling good behavior and eat too many fruits and veggies yourself. Alright, that’s not happening! But there are ways to promote healthy eating while enjoying the fun that Halloween has to offer. Pre-wrapped candy is one way safer than exposed fresh fruit and veggies, in that tainted candy is not as much of an issue as it is with fresh fruit and veggies. But we have created this “candy culture” of excess? Ideas such as “eat as much as you want tonight because that’s all the candy you’ll get” encourages binge eating. Instead, ask kids how much candy do they really think they need? This lets kids think and be part of the process. Allow them to choose a few that evening and how they will handle the rest of their loot. You might consider a “candy buy-back program,” where kids can choose to sell back their candy to you for a special “treat” like a toy or privilege. Encourage mindful eating by giving a piece of candy with a meal. Make the conversation about healthful living, not gaining weight. Help kids recognize how to stop snacking before they are full. Other strategies recommended by experts include storing candy out of child’s sight, such as in a cupboard or other out-of-the-way place, modeling healthful eating for your kids, and give the kids a healthy meal before they go trick-or-treating so they won’t be so hungry when they get home. And “All things in moderation, including moderation!” Halloween is a holiday so don’t be overly strict, prescriptive, or judgmental. Balance the joy of kids having fun and engaging them in the process of taking personal responsibility for their behavior and actions. Happy Halloween!!
