Life at Park Place

Happy Birthday America

Tri-L Co Music presents: American Made Concert Friday, July 1 2 pm in the Living Room Carlyn Lloyd, flutist, and Jon Warfel, pianist, will be presenting a program of music by American composers entitled American Made. The concert will feature music of American composers from colonial times through the present, utilizing the flute, piccolo, fife, and Native American Flute. In addition to the piano, Mr. Warfel will perform on the Taos Indian Drum. The program will include works of Alexander Reinagle (a contemporary of George Washington), George Gershwin, Scott Joplin, and Aaron Copland. Happy Independence Day Monday, July 4 Please know that our tradition on national holidays is to serve a brunch in the middle of the day in the Dining Room. As a reminder, dinner will not be served in the Dining Room on July 4. Later that evening, tune in to channel 1901 at 8 pm for a 30-minute televised fireworks display.

Jeffrey Deutsch Presents: A Tribute to George Gershwin Wednesday, July 6 at 3 pm Living Room George Gershwin

was one of the most significant and popular music composers of his time. Among his

best-known works are the Rhapsody in Blue , An American in Paris , Swanee , and jazz standards like Embraceable You and I Got Rhythm . Jeffrey, singer/piano player and Park Place regular, has opened for The Smothers Brothers, Billy Crystal, and the Beach Boys; has performed at Chicago’s Symphony Center, and, for years, on Crystal Cruises. He also has had a significant teaching career in vocal jazz at Elmhurst University and Columbia College. Come ready to sing along!

Trip to The Original Rainbow Cone in Lombard Tuesday, July 5 1 pm at the Main Entrance Ride on the Park Place bus to The Original Rainbow Cone ice cream shop in Lombard, where we will order off the menu and enjoy sweet treats indoors. No need to bring cash or credit cards; staff will pay for the ice cream and charge your Park Place accounts for what you order following the trip. The Original Rainbow Cone brought its sweet five-flavor slice of Chicago to Lombard. Dating back to 1926, the Original Rainbow Cone is a famed Windy City food. It features layers of chocolate, strawberry, Palmer House (cherry vanilla with walnuts) and pistachio ice cream topped by a slab of orange sherbet.

Park Place Book Discussion Saturday, July 9 3 pm in the Providence Dining Room The July Book is Between Sisters by Kristin Hannah. All are welcome to attend.

Trip to The Art Institute of Chicago/ Cezanne Exhibit Thursday, July 14

10:15 am at the Main Entrance

Travel with Park Place residents to the Art Institute of Chicago to see the new Cezanne exhibit. We plan to arrive when the museum opens at 11am. There will be time for viewing the special exhibit, as well as time for lunch and/or looking at other galleries. We will depart from the museum at 2:00pm. This is the first major overview of Cezanne’s work in North America in more than a quarter century. The exhibit presents more than 100 works, including oil paintings, watercolors,

and drawings. The exhibition considers what set Cezanne apart from his contemporaries, and how his work continues to influence the painters of today.

Residents who have museum memberships, there will be no fee for museum entrance or exhibition entrance. Members, please bring your membership cards. The non-member fee is $26, which includes entry to the museum and entry to the special exhibit. RSVP with a reservation form by July 6.

Park Place Activities Rooms Available for Private Events

Just a reminder that our activity rooms at Park Place, including the Card Room, Club Room, the Community Room, and the Providence Dining Room are available for residents to use for private events. If you wish to reserve a room for an event, staff needs at least 45 days notice so that calendar and supporting arrangements can be made. Rental fees apply—but they are reasonable: generally, $25 plus fees for set-up and break-downs of the rooms as needed. To make a reservation for your private event please contact the Concierge. For your information, the Community Room has been reserved on Saturday, July 16, from 11am-3pm for a family baby shower. This does not conflict with other events scheduled for the Community Room that day.

Museum of Ice Cream Are the residents of Park Place interested in visiting Chicago's new Museum of Ice Cream, located in the former Chicago Tribune building? Staff would like to know if we should work to schedule a trip. In the latest among seven other locations nationwide, the Chicago Museum of Ice Cream allows visitors to learn about the history of ice cream, play at the dessert- themed indoor carnival, relax in a "sea of pink clouds" in a balloon room, and throw virtual cherries at each other in an integrative game, a release said. Naturally, museum-goers will also have the chance to try five dessert stations , featuring unique items like ice cream hot dogs and shaved ice, along with seasonal treats. Vegan and allergen-free treat options will be available for guests with dietary restrictions as well. The museum opens July 16, and tickets are $36 (which include the five ice cream desserts). Transportation provided by Park Place. Please RSVP to the Concierge if you would be interested in going. This RSVP does not obligate you because a date has not yet been set. If enough residents express interest, we will schedule a trip!

Hallway Safety There are many times when we are all in a hurry. But

do keep in mind that a hallway collision would be problematic for Park Place residents. Please take your time and be especially sure to slow down when you are approaching a blind hallway intersection. Residents and others have seen some near misses — so please be careful and slow down.
