LYNDA ATER - A RETROSPECTIVE

MAY 3 - 28 , 2022

FIRST THURSDAY, MAY 5TH Virtual Artist Talk & Tour at 5:30pm on Facebook Live Artist Reception 6-9pm at the gallery

In January of this year, Lynda lost her husband to a rare oral cancer. In an unimaginable twist of fate, she has recently been diagnosed with a rare brain cancer. With admirable courage, Lynda is facing what we all must experience - the end of our life. For many years, Lynda’s ar twork has explored the challenge of transforming the threatening images of the cancer cells that she analyzed as a laboratory scientist into dynamic compositions and graceful paintings. Following her appreciation of Josef Albers’ work, Lynda has continually experimented with variations of color interaction. Her admiration for traditional ‘women’s work’ (i.e., quilting and handwork) has led her to explore the creation of patterns, both organic and geometric. Lynda’s background in scientific inquiry has merged with her ar tistic sensibility to create a unique and stunning body of work.

Lynda Ater, SUSPENSION 1, acrylic on canvas, 36” x 36”, 2020

“We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.”

MICHAEL PARSONS ________________________ FINE ART Across the Park Blocks from the Portland Art Museum Louis Bunce 1907–1983, OREGON

Louis Bunce remains one of the North- west’s most iconic and beloved artists. A powerful force for Modernism, Bunce made lasting contributions to Oregon art as a painter, printmaker, muralist, and teacher, as well as being widely known as a bon vivant. A prolific artist whose intellectual curiosity led him to work in many styles, Bunce constantly explored and refined the latest ideas in art-making into his own creative process. The Hallie Ford Museum of Art presented a major retrospective of Bunce’s work and pub- lished the monograph Dialogue with Modernism in 2017.
