WHY STUDY AT Swansea?

SWANSEA LIFE A city that has it all. Town, beach, campus: it’s quick and easy to get where you need to be. Whether you are a sports fanatic, culture vulture or outdoor adventurer, you’ll find plenty to keep you busy between lectures. The Gower Peninsula has five Blue Flag beaches – from chilled-out coves, perfect for revision, to beach barbecue hotspots, it is the ideal playground for outdoor adventures. Bike, jog or amble along the promenade all the way to Mumbles, a quirky, quaint seaside village with the best ice creams in town. On rainy days, visit the Glynn Vivian and Mission Gallery in town or Taliesin Arts Centre and the Egypt Centre on Singleton Campus. Literature lovers should pay at least one visit to Dylan Thomas’ home too. You can’t beat the Maritime Quarter for a drink by the sea. As well as budget bites and bars, it is home to the National Waterfront Museum, which is free.

CAMPUS LIFE The Bay Campus offers students a unique place to live and study, being one of the few universities in the world to have its very own beach. The campus also boasts an impressive array of student amenities with stunning en-suite residences, state-of- the-art library, a large collection of retail and leisure facilities and unrivalled student support services. Co-located with the College of Engineering, Computational Foundry and The College, the Campus provides a world-class environment for collaboration in research, learning and teaching, enterprise and innovation.

OUTSTANDING STUDENT EXPERIENCE You will have numerous opportunities to engage with other postgraduate students, public speakers, world-class academics and industry leaders through lectures, seminars and networking events.

SPORTS AT SWANSEA The University’s sports department ‘Sport Swansea’ encompasses all areas of sport and recreation, welcoming every level of sporting ability. We have strong links with Swansea City FC and professional rugby regions, the Ospreys and the Scarlets, who also have training bases with us. The Welsh Varsity Challenge is the biggest student event in Wales, and is the second largest of the British Varsity Games, behind Oxford and Cambridge. Varsity sees Swansea and Cardiff Universities competing in over 25 different sports, from basketball, rowing golf and hockey to fencing, squash and Ultimate Frisbee with the competition culminating in the showpiece rugby match. Many students have gone on to represent and gain contracts with semi-professional and professional clubs on the back of great performances in the Welsh Varsity match. The Bay Campus features a full height Sports Hall that can accommodate basketball, badminton, netball, volleyball, fencing and archery. There is also a fully equipped gym

with a functional room for spin and kettlebells as well as changing facilities. Other facilities include a floodlit multi-use games area and half basketball court and training pitches. A SERIOUSLY SOCIAL STUDENTS’ UNION The whole point of your students’ union is to make your university experience the best it can possibly be. Think 120 societies, 50 sports clubs and 12 months of must-see events. Whether you want to get into media, pick up a new hobby or have your voice heard on something that matters to you, there’s a way for everyone to join in.

Undergraduate studies are designed to introduce students to the knowledge base within a specific area while postgraduate study requires a higher level of understanding, greater independence and a more specialised knowledge. You may find that you have fewer lectures on your timetable compared to an undergraduate degree, however there will be a lot more independent, self-directed study.

As a result individuals with a postgraduate degree are considered to be more highly qualified. In turn the financial and emotional rewards are definitely worth it, your future career and salary prospects can be greatly improved. As will your confidence and self- esteem due to the independent nature of a postgraduate qualification.
