TRAINING FOR LEADERSHIP SINCE 1911 From the Desk of The GrandPolemarch

"Operation Restoration", Brother To Brother, Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges. February 27, 2022

To the Brothers of the Southern Province, one of our most dynamic Provinces. Greetings and welcome to what I anticipate will be a successful Province Council. It is my esteemed pleasure to welcome you on behalf of the Grand Chapter Officers and the Grand Board of Directors to the 72 nd Southern Province Council. Although your last Province Council, was held in a virtual format, a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, you have taken the necessary precautions to meet the challenges associated with hosting a face-to-face Council. The Fraternity, as a whole, was forced to operate in a virtual platform, including the 85 th Grand Chapter Meeting, and our Founder’s Day programs. I applaud the great leadership of Province Polemarch Chauncy E. Haynes, Senior Province Vice Polemarch, Jason M. Jones, Esq., the Province Planning Committee and all of you hard working Brothers of the Southern Province. You all have worked effortlessly and tirelessly to ensure this Province Council’s success and a memorable event. On behalf of the Grand Chapter Officers, Grand Board of Directors, the 34 th administration, as well as the International Headquarters Staff, I thank all involved for a job very well done! Have a wonderful and productive Province Council. Yours in the Bond, Reub Reuben A. Shelton III, Esq. Grand Polemarch

National Pan-Hellenic Council of North Alabama (NPHCNA)

February 25, 2022 Greetings Men of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.,

On behalf of the National Pan-Hellenic Council of North Alabama (NPHCNA), I extend a warm welcome to each of you attending the 72 nd Southern Province Council Meeting of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. to the beautiful “Rocket City” of Huntsville, Alabama . The primary purpose and focus of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) member organizations remains community awareness and action through educational, economic, and cultural service activities. Each of the nine (9) NPHC organizations evolved during a period when African Americans were being denied essential rights and privileges afforded others. Racial isolation on predominantly white campuses and social barriers of class on all campuses created a need for African Americans to align themselves with other individuals sharing common goals and ideals. With the realization of such a need, the African American (Black) Greek- lettered organization movement took on the personae of a haven and outlet, which could foster brotherhood and sisterhood in the pursuit to bring about social change through the development of social programs that would create positive change for Blacks and the country. Today the need remains the same. The Brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. have been revered as a service-oriented organization which has made a global impact on their communities by strengthen lives and enhancing communities through education, mentorship, scholarship, empowerment, and public service. Since the inception of the NPHCNA, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. has continually supported and contributed to the goals and ideals of the Pan- Hellenic Council. Your perseverance and devotion to supporting the NPHCNA are key elements in helping us build a strong foundation for our community. May God continue to Bless your Fraternity and the good work you do. Best wishes for a productive and successful 72 nd Southern Province Council Meeting.

Sincerely,

Monday M. Salandy, President National Pan-Hellenic Council of North Alabama (NPHCNA)

Fort Myers (FL) Alumni Celebrates Founders’ Dayand Welcomes 8 th executive director

On Saturday, January 8, 2022, Fort Myers Alumni members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity held their Annual Founders’Day Celebration at The Pelican Preserve Golf and Country Club. Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. was founded on January 5, 1911 at Indiana University by 10 bold, college educated, God- fearing young men. During a time of intense racism and the added intolerance toward Blacks by the Ku Klux Klan, the 10 Founders of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity envisioned a Fraternity with high Christian beliefs and the purpose of Achievement in Every Field of Human Endeavor. Consequently, the illustrious fraternity members decided to not seek its members in the manner of other Greek organizations. As a result, the Founders raised the expectations of Black youth and ignited their accomplishments higher than any other Greek organization. The 111 th Founders’Day Celebration Theme was “Oh, How I Love Kappa!” Chairperson Brother Dennis Golden, 22 nd Northeastern Province Polemarch, introduced the official processional and its members. Brothers traveled from as far away as Detroit, MI and Philadelphia, PA to participate in

this momentous celebration. Next, the ambiance was set with prayer by Brother Pastor Oliver Phipps and Brother Minister Tony Allen welcomed both in-person and virtual brothers. Afterwards, the occasion was given by Brother Lemy Chatelier, referring to God’s word in Luke 12:48: “To whom much is given, much is required” encouraged brothers to continue to contribute to the Bond of Kappa Alpha Psi.

After a buffet-styled lunch, 30 th Grand Polemarch and Laurel Wreath Laureate, Brother Samuel C. Hamilton, introduced the Keynote Speaker, 8 th Executive Director and Elder Watson Diggs Awardee, Brother Richard Snow. In 1977, Brother Snow was initiated into Pennsylvania State University Chapter, the Delta Theta of Kappa Alpha Psi and has held several national chairmanships at the Grand Chapter level before being hired as the 8 th Executive Director in 1998. Additionally, Brother Snow became the 112 th recipient of the Elder Watson Diggs Award during the 84 th Grand Chapter Meeting in 2019. When asked about the highlight of his Kappa experience, he insists that it wasn’t the television appearances on the Late Night with Travis Smiley or the Monique Show, nor the radio shows with Tom Joyner and Steve Harvey…not even theWhite House visits or serving as Keynote Speaker at the Mexican hospitality Summit in Monterey, Mexico in 2006.

The Return of AlabamaA&M University Chapter, the Gamma Phi of KappaAlpha Psi

The Return of Gamma Phi: On March 13, 2020, the Alabama A&M University Chapter, the Gamma Phi of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., made its long- awaited return, initiating forty-one distinguished young men. It was, nevertheless, an initiation that will be remembered for a long time. These young men have gone on to become leaders at the school and outside of school, participate in many community-service events, and some have graduated to begin work in their respective fields. This is what we call ACHIEVEMENT in every field of human endeavor. COVID Challenges: Due to the COVID-19 virus, there was an expedited initiation process whereas the test, ritual, and all other procedures had to be done on that very day. Otherwise, the young men were not going to complete the process of becoming members of Kappa Alpha Psi. However, the struggle to conduct business as usual did not end there. As brothers returned to campus in the Fall of 2020, the struggle arose regarding how to navigate fundraising, campus events, community service projects, and fellowship as brothers.

Spring 2020 initiates of the Alabama A&M University Chapter, the Gamma Phi of Kappa Alpha Psi

With the strict university restrictions accompanied by the CDC guidelines, planning for the chapter proved difficult. Nonetheless, due to the resilient efforts of the chapter officers and the assistance from active members, the brothers of Gamma Phi proved they could work hard for the fraternity. They organized numerous events and activities on campus which included participating in turkey drives, passing out roses on the quad, hosting the first annual food drive and several more. TheAAMU student body has held the chapter in high regard, as members were reestablishing the chapter as the best organization on campus once again. Also, while facing challenges of COVID, the chapter was able to win the 71st Southern Province Council Highest GPAAward. Campus Activities: Being active on campus during a Global Pandemic required a different level of collective creativity. Gamma Phi was up for the challenge. Since the return of Gamma Phi, an annual

winter clothes drive and canned food drive has been started. Items collected are donated to a local shelter. Although school and CDC restrictions prevented in-person gatherings, chapter members still worked to engage the campus through virtual forums. The chapter hosted a great discussion on Overcoming Adversity & Reforming the Criminal Justice System with attorney and author Christian Wise Smith.

Given the speci f ic impact COVID-19 has had on college students, a mental health forum with Dr. A. Mechelle Howard and Brother Dr. Christopher Howard was provided. To bring the chapter back to the forefront, Gamma Phi hosted a KappaWeek inApril 2021. This Kappa Week consisted of a virtual church service, a professional development workshop, a male empowerment forum, poetry night, andAux Cordwars. Members have also participated inAlabamaA&M University campus clean ups. Some of the Gamma Phi brothers recently participated in Alabama A&M University’s homecoming step show.

This effort symbolizes the future of the Gamma Phi Chapter. The Gamma Phi chapter’s return has been a challenge; however, the COVID-19 environment has taught the brothers a few things about being resilient, creative, and perseverance. They are continuing to grow as a chapter, looking forward a bright future on the Alabama A&M campus, and returning to the chapter’s awarding winning status in the Southern Province and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Southern Province Board Member Kendric Holder

The Gamma Phi chapter members, with support from the Gamma Phi Advisors, restored the Gamma Phi Stone prior to the 2021 Homecoming. This effort engaged chapter members and taught them a thing or two about the history and culture for maintaining the Gamma Phi Stone, and challenged their manual labor skills. Despite the challenges of the weather and supply chain issues, the Gamma Phi Stone was completed just in time for Homecoming 2021. Junior Province Vice Polemarch/AL Michael Moore
