3 WISE MEN CHANGED MY LIFE

AS A KID, I ALWAYS KNEW THAT BEING A GOOD PERSON WAS THE RIGHT THING TO BE, BUT SEEING IT IN PRACTICE THROUGH THESE MEN’S AWESOME LIVES HELPED ME BELIEVE THAT I COULD, MAYBE, FOLLOW IN THEIR FOOTSTEPS.

MY THANKSGIVING TRIBUTE TO BILL, HERB, AND FRANK

Everyone has mentors and positive influences that help shape them into the human beings that they become. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I started reflecting on three particular men in my life who became crucial to my personal development — and the deep debt of gratitude I owe every single one of them. Their names are Bill, Herb, and Frank. In this newsletter, I talk a lot about honesty and introspection. As a man of Christian faith, I think it’s important to look at where your path has taken you in life and wonder if you’re doing the right things. I think that instinct, more likely than not, comes from our old pastor at my church, Bill. He died from cancer about eight years ago, but for most of my life, he was the pastor and spiritual guide I knew. He came to our church when I was 10 years old and was one of my first customers — I mowed his lawn while I was in high school. Of course, I didn’t always listen to his teachings, until I came full circle as an adult and realized that Bill actually knew what he was talking about. When I realized that I wanted to be a lifelong member of the church, he helped baptize me at 19 years old. I have a memento from his funeral in my office, and I always think of him and his exceedingly strong faith in God.

has four kids, and, after growing up with one of his sons, Herb is like a second father to me. In fact, I’ve known him since I was just 1 year old. He’s someone who I’ve gone to for counsel numerous times in my life, and he has never failed to encourage me.

part of our faith, I believe his guidance toward integrity strengthened my spiritual path. He has no relatives nearby, but we spent so much time together that we became like family. As a counselor to other young people, he would allow me to go with him so I could help be a positive influence on others, especially kids who could’ve followed a darker path in life. As a man who served two tours in Vietnam, Frank was not always gentle about his advice, to say the least! However, I think that kind of tough guidance is exactly what a person needs sometimes. Reflecting back on these men, I have no doubt that they played a significant part in my spiritual journey and my morals of treating others with respect, integrity, and good will. As a kid, I always knew that being a good person was the right thing to be, but seeing it in practice through these men’s awesome lives helped me believe that I could, maybe, follow in their footsteps. This year, and every day, I’m exceptionally grateful for their influence.

As an elder of our church, we see each other at church often, but I’ve also worked for him as one of my clients. He gave me the opportunity to do a very large project years ago, and his nephew, Danny, who I’ve grown up with, has even become an invaluable part of our team at BLG Environmental. Herb has taught me great lessons of honesty sheerly through his character, and he never hesitates to open new doors for me. Lastly, but certainly not least, Frank was a man I met in my early 20s who encouraged me to do the right things in life. Although he wasn’t a

Hi, newsletter friends! This September, I turned 6 years old, and maybe it’s too early to call it, but I’m calling it anyway: I think I’m going to be a famous painter. A famous quote by Pablo Picasso goes, “My mother said to me, ‘If you are a soldier, you will become a general. If you are a monk, you will become the Pope.’ Instead, I was a painter, and became Picasso.” Like Picasso, my parents are super supportive of me, and I really think I can become amazing at anything I do. If I’m a student president, in no time at all, I’ll be president of the United States.

But if I had to choose what I really wanted to be right now — besides running my vegetable and cattle farm — I’d like to become a painter. I got all kinds of art supplies for my birthday, so I’ve been having a lot of fun just exploring with all kinds of works, from landscapes to portraits. It’s like playing a puzzle to figure out what you want to show people, and every time you paint, you get closer and closer! I can’t wait to keep practicing and become a master or even Ella Burns. Doesn’t that sound like an artist’s name? As an artist, it’s important to surround yourself with inspiration, and, luckily, Grandma has a really pretty garden, as well as being pretty herself! I’ve started helping Grandma with all kinds of errands around the garden, and even began growing my own lentils in a mason jar. I can’t wait until we can try eating them! Being an artist can be tough because you don’t always succeed in the way you expect. But I think the greatest lesson I’ve learned about being an artist (and, hopefully, being an adult one day) is that, like Picasso, you get to grow up into being yourself. That’s one of the best careers I can think of.

The holidays are right around the corner, and while many people can’t wait to eat turkey and swap presents, others only see stress on the horizon. Especially for those hosting parties, between decorations, big dinners, excited kids, and visiting family, it can all feel overwhelming. If celebrations are happening at your house this year, here are three tips to lessen the strain and keep up the holiday cheer. Recharge First Ensure you’re rested and recharged before the holidays by taking time to relax, getting enough sleep, and engaging in activities that make you feel good. When you’re rushing to get everything done, it can be tempting to skip self-care routines, but that will cost you in the long run.
