PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Since many of our members were unable to attend the Annual Election of Stockholders meeting on Thursday, November 15, 2018 due to the weather, I will share my President’s remarks from that meeting with you this month. As I mentioned Sunday at Dan Pierson’s retirement celebration, I feel privileged to be a member of a club as special asWilmington Country Club. It is an honor to serve as President. This has been quite a year.We started with the transition to our new Director of Golf, Michael Shank.Michael has done a terrific job and we are really excited about the future of our professional staff and our Golf Program. We are now ending this year with the transition of our Grounds Director. Dan Pierson winds up his outstanding career at the end of December and Jon Urbanski joins us in January. Jon has some wonderful ideas and he is working withTom Humphrey’s Grounds Committee. The goal is to significantly improve the daily experience of our golfers even more, though I want to caution you not to expect too much too soon. The big news this year was the weather. As JohnWellons’ comments point out, the lousy weather had a major negative impact on our budget, but more importantly it reduced the opportunity to use and enjoy your Club. It also made it impossible to maintain our grounds to the conditions our members deserve. I often get asked,“What if this year’s weather is the new normal?”While I certainly hope not, we will adjust operations, if necessary, and the staff and committees are working on creative programs that will give you additional reasons to use the Club. But, quite frankly, although my boss used to say that hope is not a strategy, I sure hope the weather is better next year! Serving as President is interesting and challenging, and this year was a real learning experience. I have learned that we are blessed with a really strong management team and we are extremely fortunate to have Phil Iannelli as our General Manager. Phil, thank you for all you do! I have also learned that no matter what we do, it seems to please some members and upset others. This has certainly been the case as we have worked on the Tennis Improvement Project. While a number of members have questioned the need for more courts, an overwhelming number of members have cried out for access to more indoor court time.We are working hard to address that need.We also have studied a number of significant projects that would help us continue to improve the member experience in addition to theTennis Improvement Project. These include a new kitchen and improvements to the driving range and both golf courses.Your Board supports the concept of these projects and has committed to moving forward with the tennis facility when funding is available. A Committee, being led by Bob Hackett, is doing a great job looking at options and developing a cost effective plan. If we hit our budget targets for next year, it certainly moves us closer. In our effort to build capital reserves, the most important thing we can all do is to help bring in new members. While our membership has been relatively stable, modest growth would pave the way for continued improvement in many areas of the Club. I would like to close with a thank you to the Executive Committee, Board of Directors and especially to all the members who serve on Committees. The biggest strength of Wilmington Country Club is that we are member owned and governed. It is vitally important that we have active committees with diverse views and ideas. Wilmington Country Club is a great Club and with your support, we can make it even better. Thank you. Gary Ferguson President

A NOTE FROM PHIL

Holiday Greetings! It is hard to believe that it is time to break out the tree and all the trimmings, but the annual ritual has arrived and with it comes the hectic pace of the season. Accordingly, there is a lot to share, so let’s get to it. Throughout the Holiday Season, casual and formal dining will be offered in all venues. The normal activity of regular membership dining always increases during this time of the year so it will be

Pub37 will also get into the holiday celebratory mix. And on the third Friday of December, that celebration gets a little “ugly”. On the 21st, our normal “Happy Hour” will encourage you to dig deep into your closet to break out that truly ugly holiday sweater and wear it with pride! It will even earn you a free beer (or wine)! The Holiday season culminates with our New Year’s Eve dinners. Just as we did last year, there will be an “early dinner” in the Tavern/Grille - complete with traditional favors and decorations - serving a special limited menu from 5:30 pm until 8:00 pm (reservations accepted for all size tables). Café 1901 will also be open for families with our youngest revelers. For those who wish to “dress up”, the Dining Room will feature the same limited menu as the Tavern/Grille, but in a more formal environment. Piano music will be provided by Jim Sullivan and some traditional New Year’s favors will add a special atmosphere to a special evening. Reservations are appreciated for this room as well. And let’s not forget that the Pub37 will also be serving your favorites and can be either a great jumping off point or a perfect destination to say goodbye to 2018.Your Club has lots of options to usher in 2019! Please permit me to remind you of some Holiday schedule adjustments. On Christmas Eve, the Club’s athletic facilities will be open until 3:00 pm when all buildings will be secured. No food service will be offered. The Club will re-open at regular times the morning of the 26th. On New Year’s Day, all athletic facilities will be available regular hours, but no Clubhouse food service will be provided, nor will the Bag Room be open. Please plan your use accordingly. There are also two “housekeeping” item that need to be shared. The first has to do with appropriate use of your mobile device while at the Club. The rule prohibits voice use anywhere on Club property, but does permit non-verbal communication while encouraging discretion on when and where to use your device.“Discretion” seems to be an issue, so let’s be clear. It is never considered appropriate to use your mobile device for any purpose, at any time, in any of the Club’s formal spaces. The second item falls in the category of appropriate attire. Please be reminded that although the Grille andTavern are casual, a collared shirt is still required for gentlemen. Hoodies and athletic wear are fine in Café 1901 or Pub37, but not appropriate for the more upscale casual dining option. If you are having guests, it is really important to share this information with them prior to arriving. Finally, let me share the appreciation of our entire staff for your generous contributions to the Employee Christmas Gift Fund.Your gift reaches all employee ranks and is truly significant. On their behalf, we thank you and hope that you and your family have a joyous holiday season. If you’re traveling, be safe. If not, I’ll see you at the Club. Phil Iannelli General Manager

extremely important (and helpful) to make reservations for formal dining or for larger tables (five or more) planning to enjoy a casual meal in the Tavern/Grille. Notification of your planned visit will allow us to have a table waiting. Of course, if you are coming from another Holiday party and simply want to stop in, please do.We will always find a way to accommodate you. The Holidays also play host to a multitude of special dining and social experiences for you to enjoy. In addition to your traditional favorites, we have spiced up the calendar with a few new events, and “reimagined” a few others. The season got started pretty early this year when, on November 26th, the decorations went up. In fact, there were several events held before we even turned the calendar to December.Wreaths were made, sales were shopped and wine was sipped! December’s first official event is scheduled for Sunday the 2nd when we will jump right into the deep end with a completely reimagined Santa Party. Enjoy a terrific evening creating family holiday memories with cookie decorating, ornament making and spending time with Santa. We’ll have a festive dinner buffet, lots of activities and plenty of time for pictures with Santa. On Wednesday the 5th, a bus filled with our members will depart to spend the day in NYC.Also very popular is theYuletide Holiday Brunch scheduled for Sunday the 9th. This event has proven an excellent opportunity to gather as a family, join old friends or entertain guests during the Holidays. OnTuesday evening the 11th, we will be holding a wonderful event where attendees will decorate a personal gingerbread house. This event is open to all ages and skill levels. We hope you will join us! The tradition of our Christmas Candlelight Dinners has continued for more than two decades! To maintain the proper feel of the evening, the event is limited to the Formal Dining Room on three consecutive nights, the 18th, 19th and 20th.Although all three nights initially filled, we always get a few last minute cancellations and try to fill those vacancies from the waiting list. If you have any flexibility in your schedule and would like to participate, we encourage you to add your name to the list. Chances are, you will get a call.

WINES OF THE MONTH

ELDERTON WINES Barosssa, Australia

Elderton’s viticultural and winemaking philosophy is one that is shared by all of the great wineries around the world. The old saying that great wine is made in the vineyard is one that holds very true at Elderton. A team approach to ensure best practice in both the vineyards and winery is key to guarantee absolute quality in the bottle. Attention to detail in pruning, picking and winemaking, and using a combination of state of the art facilities and machinery with some

tried and true traditional techniques, ensures that the wines of Elderton will always show great brightness, purity and quality. The goal of the Ashmead family is to produce world class wines from entrenched varieties grown in the Barossa from our own vineyard holdings. We celebrate the individual terroirs of each of our sites and aim to produce wines that show true regional history and character, varietal definition and a healthy slice of our own personalities.

6

BOOK CLUB Our Tuesday, December 4th selection, Lisa Wingate’s historical novel Before We Were Yours , is based on a real life scandal that took place in Memphis. It’s a stormy night in 1939 and twelve- year-old Rill Foss and her four siblings’ enchanting life on a riverboat is disrupted when their father has to rush her mother to a Memphis hospital. Rill is put in charge, but she can’t stop the men who barge in and snatch the children from their shanty home to bring them to the Tennessee Children’s Home Society orphanage. Although the children are told they will be united with their parents, Rill does not believe them. The future seems dark and uncertain as Rill struggles to keep her siblings together. Move to the present time in Aiken, South Carolina where Avery Stafford has just returned home to help her father deal with his colon cancer. Although Avery seems to have everything: looks, family position, and a handsome fiancé, she is troubled by a chance encounter with a woman in a nursing home who seems to know her. As a federal prosecutor, Avery is accustomed to delving into people’s past, and so she begins investigating this woman to see if the Stafford family has any murky history that might interfere with her father’s re-election campaign for the U S Senate. Join us at 4:00 p.m. in the Ladies’ Lounge as Susan DiPietro leads the discussion of this historical novel which recreates the horror and pain children felt when they were torn from their families and put up for adoption. Our selection for January is Paulette Jiles’ historical novel News of the World - a vivid portrait of 1870’s Texas that captures a beautiful and lawless landscape, and a masterful exploration of family, responsibility, honor and trust. This is a story you will treasure.

COACHING CORNER PATIENT METHODICAL (ATTRITIONAL)

This player plays long rallies up and down the wall. Usually plays with slower tempo. They limit angles for their opponents, and they themselves will only go short when they have a real opening. They use varied height and pace and keep opponents in the back court. Pros : Keeps shooters and attackers in a more defensive situation. They are very patient and force opponents to shoot too early. Allows for deception. Works well with faster opponents and those that have trouble out of the back. Exploits backcourt weaknesses. Cons : Requires consistency, patience and discipline. When stretched out it is difficult to control the ball. Rallies can be extended unnecessarily so, unless on purpose. STRATEGIES AGAINST THE PATIENT METHODICAL PLAYER • Use higher tempo • Vary the pace • Volley your way out of the back court, don’t hit your way out • Boast because you want to, not because you have to • Try and twist the opponent by playing good wide crosscourts and effective working boasts working cross drops. Make them stretch. Ed Chilton Assistant Director of Racquets
