VISITING FACULTY SPEAKER SERIES

ABOUT EXPLO Online Grades 10-12 is focused on providing you with meaningful career exploration. While each course we offer features visiting faculty and partnerships who are connected to the career pathways within that course’s topic, we also offer a broader series of speakers whose sessions are open to all students. These faculty visit as a part of our Industry Experts series, our Career Lab program, or our College Prep series. Each session is structured around giving you direct access to the experts, so that you can learn about the day-to-day life and future of a given profession, identify the best colleges and universities for your personality and career ambitions, or be prepared to secure great internships and other professional learning opportunities.

LINDSAY COHEN Senior Admission Consultant, Spark Admissions

A Senior Admissions Consultant at Spark Admissions, Lindsay Cohen is a veteran educational advisor with experience guiding students in admissions and higher education. Dr. Cohen works with students to help them develop their academic skills, expand their extracurricular interests, and attain admission to their top choice schools. Lindsay has served on the faculty at Harvard University teaching in the History and Literature concentration and in the Harvard Writing Program, as well as, serving as an undergraduate academic advisor. Her scholarly background and her experience in academic advising gives her exceptional insight into the range of schools, programs, and opportunities available. Moreover, after working in the Tufts University admissions office and as an alumni interviewer, Lindsay understands the process through which schools assess applicants and she is eager to work with students and their families to help them find the right fit.

JESSICA HECHT Broadway, TV, and Film Actress

Jessica Hecht is a Tony Award-nominated actress. Her many Broadway and off-Broadway appearances include starring roles in Fiddler on the Roof, A View from the Bridge, The Assembled Parties, The Three Sisters, and Make Me, among many others. Her recent films include The English Teacher with Julianne Moore, Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar with Leonardo DiCaprio, Rob Reiner’s The Summer of Monte Wildhorn with Morgan Freeman, and The Sitter. Well known for her role as “Susan” on “Friends,” she also starred in “The Single Guy” with Jonathan Silverman, and in James Brooks’s “What about Joan?” with Joan Cusack. Her many memorable performances include guest appearances on numerous television series including “The Good Wife,” “Nurse Jackie,” “ER,” “Seinfeld,” and Marvel’s “Violet.”

RICHARD GABRIEL Justice of the Colorado Supreme Court

Wednesday, 7/22 from 4:30 - 5:30 EDT

Justice Gabriel has served on the Colorado Supreme Court since September 1, 2015. He was appointed by Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper following seven years of judicial service on the Colorado Court of Appeals. Prior to taking the bench, Justice Gabriel was in private practice with a focus on commercial, intellectual property, probate, and products liability litigation and appeals. He also served as City Prosecutor for Lafayette, Colo., and clerked for the Honorable J. Frederick Motz of the U.S. District Court, District of Maryland. He was co-counsel on the Crystal Cartier v. Michael Jackson intellectual property case, representing Jackson and is a trumpet player and jazz aficionado.

DARYN CARP Producer, Director, and Media Personality

Thursday, 7/23 from 5:00 - 6:00 EDT

As a former NBC Page rocking the grey suit that Kenneth made famous on 30 Rock, Daryn came right out of the Page Program to assist one of the most influential pop culture icons currently on television, Andy Cohen. While at Bravo, Daryn created the web series,“@sk Andy” that she hosts and runs on bravotv.com. At the start of 2014, Andy and Daryn left Bravo to start a new production company, Most Talkative. Daryn co-hosts a weekly Oxygen podcast, “Martinis and Murder,” which dives deep into the actual crime and the theories surrounding each murder, while drinking an appropriately themed cocktail. The podcast has millions of downloads and was featured in the New York Times , as well as Cosmopolitan . As of November of 2019, Daryn hosts PEOPLE TV’s Reality Check , a daily online interview show diving into all the drama of reality tv. Since 2017, Daryn has been in three national commercials for AUTOTRADER with Andy Cohen.

MICHAEL DORF Professor of Law, Cornell University

Thursday, 7/28 from 4:30 - 5:30 EDT

Michael C. Dorf is the Robert S. Stevens Professor of Law at Cornell University. Michael has authored numerous journal articles and books and was co-editor of the casebook and related materials Constitutional Law (West, 2015 and yearly updates). Michael holds an A.B. and a J.D. from Harvard University. He served as a law clerk for Judge Stephen Reinhardt of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and then for Justice Anthony M. Kennedy of the Supreme Court of the United States, and maintains an active pro bono practice. Before joining the Cornell faculty, Mike taught at Rutgers-Camden Law School for three years and at Columbia Law School for thirteen years. His popular writing appears regularly in Newsweek , Verdict , and on his blog, Dorf on Law .

MICHELLE SERGEL Emergency Medical Physician, Cook County Hospital Co-Executive Director for Clinical Skills and Simulation

Wednesday, 7/29 from 4:30 - 6:30 EDT

Dr. Michelle Sergel is an emergency medicine physician at John H. Stroger of Cook County Hospital in Chicago. She serves as the Co-Executive Director of the Rush Center for Clinical Skills and Simulation. She developed, created, and now runs the Cook County Hospital Simulation Center since 2006. She also serves as the Director of the Rush Medical University Simulation Fellowships program. Her devotion over the last decade has been spent on developing simulation curricula for the various medical disciples and teaching attendings, residents, and students. Beginning in 2013, Dr. Sergel created and has been teaching simulation-based Emergency Medicine Bootcamp courses across the country.

ANDREW EYRE Emergency Medicine Physician, Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital

Dr. Andrew Eyre is an attending physician at Brigham and Women’s and Massachusetts General Hospitals in Boston, and is an instructor in emergency medicine at Harvard Medical School. After graduating from the Laner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont and completing a residency in emergency medicine, Dr. Eyre pursued postdoctoral training in medical simulation at Brigham and Women’s STRATUS Center, one of the nation’s premier simulation facilities. Dr. Eyre also has a degree in Health Professions Education from Massachusetts General Hospital.

LOGAN POWELL Dean of Admission, Brown University

Thursday, 7/30 from 10:30 - 11:30 EDT

Logan Powell is Dean of Admission at Brown University. Prior to his post at Brown, he served as Director of Undergraduate Admission at Princeton University, Senior Associate Dean of Admission at Bowdoin College and spent five years as a member of the Harvard University admission staff. He serves on the Board of Directors for Common App. In his current role, Powell acknowledges that there are many paths to success, learning takes time and nothing worthwhile happens without significant effort. Powell is a graduate of Bowdoin College and earned his M.Ed. at the Graduate School of Education at Harvard University.

ARUNAVA MAJUMDAR Watson and Cloud Architect, IBM

Friday, 7/31 from 4:30 - 5:30 EDT

Arunava (Ron) Majumdar is a Watson and Cloud architect with over 20 years of experience in software design and development. He leads the asset portfolio strategy for IBM’s Watson and Cloud platforms and the Chicago Center for Advanced Studies. He has been involved with large scale design, architecture and implementation for IBM clients, helping them successfully navigate through the project lifecycle. He has designed and created High Availability and Disaster Recovery solutions with IBM integration products and has been involved in performance testing and securing client environments. Ron is currently working on Watson services, Internet-of-Things, Micro-services, API Economy, Hybrid Integration and Pattern-based automation. He is deeply involved with moving workloads to the cloud and application modernization. Ron has several patents and published assets to his credit. He regularly collaborates with research faculty and universities on innovative ideas and implementations around emerging technologies.
