They say that wisdom comes with age. Maybe that’s so. But that doesn’t mean we aren’t human beings — and human beings tend to make the same mistakes over and over again. For some reason, we don’t like to admit defeat, even when the smart thing to do is throw in the towel. I fall victim to that myself. But one thing I’ve learned over the years is that sometimes, you just need to let your ego take the hit, learn what you can, and move on. And make no mistake, ego is what’s holding you back. One of the best things you can do is sit down and make an honest assessment of what you’re good at and what you’re not good at. Strengths and weaknesses are a big part of what defines us. Since it’s hard to be objective, if you have a trustworthy friend or family member who knows you well enough, maybe have them make a list of your strengths and weaknesses, too. It’s always interesting to see where your list and theirs differ! By the way, if you have a friend who can do that, hold onto them, because being both honest and somewhat kind is a strength of their own character, and it’s not too common to see. But whether you’re working with another person or just writing items down yourself, that list of what you’re good at (and what you’re not) will be one of the most valuable things you possess. Once you know yourself, you know what areas you need to work on and which efforts are probably worth your time. Perhaps most importantly, you’ll know what to walk away from and when.
