I am honored to serve as the Chair of the Midwestern Legislative Conference (MLC) of The Council of State Governments, and I look forward to bringing this special event to Detroit next July 19-22, 2020. On behalf of the Michigan Legislature, I invite you to participate in this landmark celebration, as Michigan hosts the 75th Annual Meeting of the MLC. Please join Michigan’s legislative leaders and me in welcoming legislators from 11 states and 4 Canadian provinces as they visit Pure Michigan. MLC’s 75th Annual Meeting will bring together hundreds of lawmakers and guests to discuss a wide variety of issues important to our region. It will feature guest presentations from leading thinkers and policy experts in fields ranging from agriculture, education and economic development to criminal justice, health, fiscal affairs and more. The conference also includes evening social events for all attendees, as well as a full lineup of special activities for spouses, children, and guests to highlight some of the Detroit area’s finest attractions. Additional details including a preliminary program, registration, keynote speakers, session topics and social events will be sent to you early next spring. As you consider your charitable giving for 2020, we respectfully ask you to consider setting aside funds to support our 2020 Legislative Conference. To provide the high-quality programming that members and guests have come to expect, this huge undertaking can only be successful with your help. In the months to come, we will contact you directly to make a formal pledge of support for this event. Since registration fees cover only a portion of the costs of this conference, we rely on the generous support of sponsors like you. In addition to receiving complimentary conference registrations, all MLC sponsors are acknowledged in several ways throughout the year and during the conference. We will also honor our contributors during a special reception that is held during the annual meeting. Please note that early sponsors (contributions or pledges received prior to February 3, 2020) will also be acknowledged in the registration brochure sent to all legislators and other potential attendees across the region next spring. We will include logos for contributors at the Chairman’s Circle and Diamond levels. MLC’s Annual Meeting rotates into Michigan only once every dozen years. Next year’s conference provides us with a rare opportunity to showcase the best that our state has to offer to neighbors from across the Midwest and Canada. Several months ago, you received a letter from me, and all of Michigan’s legislative leaders, to let you know about the 75th Annual Meeting of the Midwestern Legislative Conference (MLC), which is coming to Michigan for the first time since 2007. At that time, we asked you to consider becoming a sponsor of the conference. This letter is to follow up on that request. I am proud to be hosting the meeting in Detroit this summer. My colleagues in the Michigan Legislature and I look forward to hosting you from July 19-22. I first became involved with the MLC and The Council of State Governments shortly after I was elected to the legislature. I quickly learned that the annual meeting was an important opportunity for legislators from around the region to discuss some of the major issues facing state government, and I have attended regularly ever since. In keeping with Michigan’s spirit of innovation that “there has got to be a better way,” we have an outstanding program in the works, with topics that will examine a wide range of policy issues including entrepreneurship, the history and future of innovation and my chairman’s initiative on literacy. Our opening keynote will be given by Steven Johnson, best-selling author and host of a PBS series on innovations that made the modern world. The MLC’s six policy committees — Agriculture and Natural Resources, Criminal Justice and Public Safety, Economic Development, Education, Health and Human Services, and Midwest-Canada Relations — will also meet during the conference to discuss topics within their subject areas. We will have special programming for spouses and youth, as well as evening events for all attendees. We’re excited to show off sites like the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Fillmore Detroit, Greenfield Village and more. The registration brochure, which will be mailed to you in the spring, will have a more detailed program. The enclosed contribution reply form lists the sponsorship levels and the corresponding complimentary registrations that come with each level. Contributors will also be invited to a special reception on Tuesday, July 21, and are acknowledged in the meeting program.
