The psychiatry residency program was developed in 2017. The program is ACGME accredited. Our first class graduated in 2021, with each graduate either starting full-time employment or matching into the fellowship of their choice. Additionally, we are proud to announce that two PGY 3 residents advance matched into Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowships! Our mission is to create a nurturing, cohesive and collegial learning experiencing with a commitment to producing knowledgeable, practical and caring professionals who are committed to excellence in patient care and ongoing learning. We provide a variety of clinical experiences to ensure that our trainees are exposed to a diverse patient population and clinical approaches to patient care. The Behavioral Health and Wellness Center at the Medical Center of Aurora is a 120 bed behavioral hospital located in Aurora, Colorado with acute adult inpatient, adolescent, and geriatric psychiatry units. In addition we recently opened a women’s unit, specializing in the care of women through the life-cycle. Our PHP, IOP and outpatient services offer exposure to continuity of care and the use of both medication management and psychotherapy. Residents will also be exposed to experiences in sub-specialty areas of psychiatry including geriatric psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, consultation liaison psychiatry, ECT, eating disorders, peri-partum psychiatry, substance use disorders and forensic psychiatry. Our teaching faculty have extensive collective experience in these subspecialty areas, and are enthusiastic and committed to our mission. Our program emphasizes the growth of clinical excellence alongside the development our residents’ personal growth and wellness. The resident wellness committee, annual resident retreat, process groups, mentorship programs and program director open door policy are all tailored to building cohesiveness and developing the careers of our young psychiatrists as well as fostering their personal growth. Patricia Westmoreland, MD Program Director, Psychiatry

Patricia Westmoreland, MD Program Director Dr. Westmoreland is Medical Director of the Women’s Unit and Psychiatry Residency Program Director at The Medical Center of Aurora/Skyridge. She is also a consulting psychiatrist for the ACUTE Center for Eating Disorders at Denver Health, and practices forensic psychiatry in Denver, CO. Dr. Westmoreland graduated from medical school at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. She completed a brain imaging research fellowship, residency in Internal Medicine and Psychiatry and an Endocrinology fellowship at the University of Iowa. In July 2012, she graduated from the Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship Program at the University of Colorado. Dr. Westmoreland is board certified in General Psychiatry, Psychosomatic Medicine, and Forensic Psychiatry. She is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), Area 7 Deputy Representative to the APA Assembly, APA-PAC Board member, Past President of the Colorado Psychiatric Society (CPS), Chair of the Colorado Physicians for Mental Health Political Action Committee, Co-chair of the CPS Legislative Committee and Legislative liaison between the CPS and the Colorado Medical Society (CMS). Dr. Westmoreland serves as councilor to the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law (AAPL) and is Chair of the AAPL Ethics and Suicidology committees. Her interests include women’s mental health, ethical and legal challenges in managing patients with severe eating disorders, peripartum mental health and psychiatric management of medically ill patients. Dr. Westmoreland is the editor of Tipping the scales: Ethical and Legal Dilemmas in Managing Severe Eating Disorders, published by APA press in 2020. In addition to book chapters and articles in peer-reviewed publications, her writing has recently centered on women’s mental health concerns during the COVID-19 pandemic. She has also been interviewed for COVID-19 related news stories (Psychiatric Times, Denver Post, 5280 magazine as well as Fox and NBC news affiliates). Chris G. Rogers, MD Associate Program Director Dr. Rogers is the associate program director as well as the medical director of child & adolescent services at The Medical Center of Aurora. He is the current president of the Colorado Child & Adolescent Psychiatric Society and sits on the Advocacy Committee for the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. Dr. Rogers attended medical school as well as adult psychiatry residency and child & adolescent fellowship at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. His passions are teaching, psychotherapy and advocating for the needs of the families he serves. He is active in following the available research around cannabis use and recently helped update the AACAP Facts for Families on adolescents and marijuana. Dr. Rogers enjoys the challenges presented by helping to build a new psychiatry residency program and the opportunities to learn from resident physicians. When he is not working too much he is typically playing too hard either climbing up a cliff or biking down a mountain. He has 3 wonderful kids who often remind him how it’s hard to have a dad who always wants to have a “big talk.”

Our Faculty

Samrit Brar, MD Core Faculty Dr. Brar is core teaching faculty and a staff psychiatrist on the adult and geriatric inpatient unit, as well as co-director of ECT services at The Medical Center of Aurora. He graduated from medical school at Northeast Ohio Medical University near Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Brar split his residency time between The University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio and the University of Colorado, Denver. After becoming board certified in psychiatry, Dr. Brar worked as a contract outpatient psychiatrist for the United States Air Force at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan. Upon returning stateside, he joined The Medical Center of Aurora in 2018. Leah Brar, MD Core Faculty Dr. Brar is a board-certified forensic psychiatrist who oversees the forensic psychiatry experience for the residency. Her medical practice is dedicated both to a private forensic psychiatry practice and to providing coverage services as an attending psychiatrist at both the Medical Center of Aurora and the Eating Recovery Center. After earning an undergraduate degree in psychology, Dr. Brar attended Baylor College of Medicine. She completed a residency in general psychiatry at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio in 2011 and graduated from the Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship at the University of Colorado in 2012. Following her fellowship, Dr. Brar served in the United States Air Force until 2018, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and holding several leadership positions, including Deputy Chief of the Medical Staff. During her time in the Air Force, she completed a combat deployment and earned several awards for her service. Dr. Brar is active on several professional committees in both the Colorado Psychiatry Society and the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law. Robin Bershader, DO Core Faculty Dr. Bershader is Board Certified in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and General Psychiatry. She attended Lake Erie College o fOsteopathic Medicine in Bradenton, Florida. She then completed her General Psychiatry Residency and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, TN. Dr. Bershader currently works at the Eating Recovery Center where she supervises our residents.

Alfredo Rivera, MD Teaching Faculty Dr. Rivera is currently the Chair of Behavioral Health and Medical Director of Geriatric Psychiatry at the Medical Center of Aurora. His education includes, pre- med at Syracuse University, medical school at UST Philippines, and both residency and fellowship at the University of Cincinnati. Additional experience in the specialty includes being a Founding Fellow of the Beck Institute of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and a former Certified Principal Investigator for clinical trials. Being ABPN board-certified in both psychiatry and geriatric psychiatry, his focus is to promote specialized and state-of-the-art care for mental health conditions in the community, with special emphasis on the elderly. As former program director, he is still actively involved as Teaching Faculty for the HCA HealthOne Psychiatry program. Zachary Robinson, MD Core Faculty Dr. Robinson was born and grew up in rural New Mexico. He went to the University of New Mexico for his undergraduate studies and Northern Arizona University where he earned his Master’s degree in Biology. He then moved to Denver where he spent years in research before attended medical school, psychiatry residency, and child and adolescent fellowship at the University of Colorado earning his board certification in adult and child and adolescent psychiatry. During his medical training Dr. Robinson was a founder of a large student organization focused on improving community health and developing community gardens in Aurora neighborhoods. He also actively participated in research during his entire medical training. Dr. Robinson was a Chief Fellow in his final year in fellowship and developed a passion for quality improvement. After fellowship Dr. Robinson accepted a position at Eating Recovery Center and spent two years treating patients with severe eating disorders. Dr. Robinson was drawn to child and adolescent psychiatry because of his passion for helping children, adolescents, and families using a well balance psychiatric approach. Dr. Robinson is currently the Medical Director of Adult Services at TMCA and enjoys working with a mixed caseload of C&A and adult patient. Dr. Robinson is currently the Director of Research and QI for the residency program. When not working, Dr. Robinson can be found enjoying the many outdoor activities that Colorado has to offer with his wife, three children, and dog. Michelle DeNault, MD Core Faculty Dr. DeNault is a board certified child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist in Denver, CO. She is currently proud faculty at The Medical Center of Aurora, managing the emergency psychiatry rotation. She also serves as medical director for MindCare Solutions, providing consult-liaison services to numerous hospitals across the country via telepsychiatry. She is in the process of transitioning to executive medical director of physician services, and has helped develop some basic education surrounding converting a C/L hospital group to a virtual model Tips to Convert to C/L Telepsychiatry. She completed medical school in Detroit, MI at Wayne State University, residency in adult psychiatry in Denver, CO at University of Colorado, and finally fellowship in child & adolescent psychiatry at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Dr. DeNault is the 2021 President for the Colorado Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Society (CCAPS) and particularly enjoys serving on the social committee. Her career interests include telepsychiatry, consultative-liaison and emergency psychiatry, systems-based practice, and child & adolescent mental health.

Erin Smith, MD Core Faculty Dr. Erin Smith is an attending psychiatrist at The Medical Center of Aurora. She attended medical school at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, LA, receiving her MD in 2014. She completed a Psychiatry residency at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock, AR, in 2018. From there she completed her board certification in General Psychiatry and took her first job here at The Medical Center of Aurora in the fall of 2018. Her interests mostly lie in acute adult psychiatry and associated psychopharmacology, but you can find her running about the geriatric unit, the outpatient clinic, and ECT at times. Outside of work she is either exploring Colorado or adventuring out of state.

About the Program Eligibility and Selection of Residents and Fellows Residents and fellows in ACGME-accredited programs at the hospital must be selected based on qualifications that meet or exceed the standards below. 1. Graduates of medical schools in the U.S. and Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee for Medical Education (LCME); or, 2. Graduates of osteopathic medicine in the U.S. accredited by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA); or, 3. Graduates of medical schools outside the U.S. or Canada who have received a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical 4. Graduates (ECFMG); or, Graduates of medical schools outside the U.S. who have completed a Fifth Pathway program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school. 5. Applicants must be recent (two or fewer years) graduates from medical school to be considered. Special exceptions may be considered for: • Candidates with an M.D. or D.O. with a M.P.H./M.S./Ph.D. and extensive prior research experience after completion of an LCME or a COCAaccredited medical or osteopathic medical school in the U.S. or Canada • Candidates who have served a prolonged period as a general medical officer in the U.S. military • Candidates who have successfully completed an ACGME or AOA-accredited residency/ fellowship program in the U.S. or Canada. 6. All requisite prior training must be successfully completed prior to beginning any residency or fellowship program. 7. Applicants must have passed USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination) Step 1 and have taken both components of Step 2 or the COMLEX (Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination) Level 1 and have taken both components of Level 2. Programs will select candidates to interview only from among the pool of eligible applicants, evaluating each applicant on the basis of their preparedness, ability, aptitude, academic background (to include clerkship grades, standardized test scores, communication skills, and humanistic qualities such as motivation, honesty, and integrity).

All GME training programs are required to use the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) to receive and accept applications to the program. All programs at the hospital will participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) as the primary method of recruiting trainees. All applicants who are granted interviews must interview prior to the initial match process. Exceptions may be made for fellowship or other programs not going through ERAS. For residents or fellows attempting to transfer, the residency/fellowship program must first seek permission from the HCA Healthcare GME division vice president to consider the transfer. If permission is granted, then the receiving program must receive verification of each applicant’s level of competency in the required clinical field using ACGME or CanMEDS Milestones assessments from the prior training program. A physician who has completed a residency/fellowship program that was not accredited by ACGME, RCPSC, or CFPC may enter an ACGME-accredited residency/fellowship program in the same specialty at the PGY-1 level and, at the discretion of the program director at the ACGME-accredited program, may be advanced to the PGY-2 level based on ACGME Milestones assessments at the ACGME-accredited program. This provision applies only to entry into residency/fellowship in those specialties for which an initial clinical year is not required for entry. Applicants invited to interview for a resident/fellow position must be informed, in writing or by electronic means, of the terms, conditions, and benefits of their appointment to the ACGME- accredited program, as well as all institutional and program policies regarding eligibility and selection for appointment, either in effect at the time of the interview or that will be in effect at the time of their eventual appointment. This includes financial support; vacations; parental, sick, and other leaves of absence; and professional liability, hospitalization, health, disability and other insurance accessible to residents/fellows and their eligible dependents. All terms, conditions, and benefits of the potential appointment are described in the GME resident/fellow contract.
