Letter from the Director Hopefully by now you have used our new website and noticed our new branding. We’re very proud of our marketing staff for their creative designs and for their efforts to make the website accessible for everyone. Accessibility was the guiding principle for this new website because our old site had many accessibility issues that the Office of Civil Rights worked with us to fix. If you or anyone you know encounters any kind of issue using it, there is a link at the bottom of the page to report problems. It’s been a real educational experience learning about online accessibility, but there’s still so much left for us to learn. The new design should also be easier to navigate with less click-throughs to get to the pages you want. Our staff worked hard to make sure wording, navigation, and design were easy to follow for anyone, not just those who are familiar with libraries and the way they work. We hope you love this new website and brand! - Patty Hector

The Friends of the Library are a dedicated group of volunteers who raise money to donate to the library. In February 2019, they opened a Used Book Store at the Benton branch which is open any time the library is open, and closes 30 minutes before the library closes. Visitors can browse the Used Book Store and bring their items upstairs to pay. You can also browse the Bryant Used Book Store section for a variety of materials. The Friends of the Library are always taking applications for new Friends! Fill out a form online or visit either branch to fill out a form in person. They also take donations of gently-used books, DVDs, video games, and more at both branches. Visit our website for information on donations they do not accept.

Meet the Staff

Alan is the Community Librarian. What does that mean? Glad you asked! Basically, if it involves community events, community outreach, or civic engagement, that’s his department. So far this year he has been paid to sing karaoke at a bar, interview NY Times bestselling authors, and fill the parking lot of the Bob Herzfeld Memorial Library with pups as part of a pet adoption event. Not bad work. Alan received his Library Science degree in 2021. This requires him to read a lot and live a

retiring life with multiple cats. He is an overachiever on both fronts. This is his third library job, after serving as circulation coordinator for both National

Park College and Henderson State. Alan’s five cats allow him to reside alongside them at a lovely spot near Lake Ouachita so long as he keeps them fed, watered, and mildly entertained. So far, so good. Weird fact: He does not have, nor does he desire, a television. What was your favorite toy as a kid? A stuffed beagle named Homer. Please don’t tell my cats. They are dismissive enough without this information. Share one thing that you love that you get to do nearly every day. I love to swim. I try to get in at least 1,000 yards every day. What are three things still left on your bucket list? I have a niece who just turned seventeen, and I’ve never met her. She lives in Helsinki. I would love to visit her.

I want to see the Northern Lights. I’d like to get my MBA. No, really. What, or who, are you a “closet” fan of?

I am from Seattle, and all my teams are lousy. Both the Kraken and the Seahawks are at the bottom of their respective divisions, and the Mariners – they have been a team for forty-five years – are the only team in Major League baseball to have never even made it to the World Series. I looked it up. #librarian
