We’ve been working on updating our strategic plan for most of 2021 and while its importance cannot be overstated—it drives all our programs and services—there’s another document we’ve been working on that is just as important: Our core values as a staff. This is what drives us. Saline County Library Core Values Be Community Focused • Our community is...EVERYONE. Whoever you are, you matter, and we will do our best to make sure you are welcome. • We are here to serve by being accessible and inclusive to our community and coworkers. • We support diversity and growth in all areas. • We strive for friendly, professional, and trustworthy engagements. Be Creative • We will set our curiosity free and be open-minded about changing the library world. All ideas are welcome. • We strive for excellence and making a difference in people’s lives. • We are intentional at finding solutions that are meaningful and impactful to the work environment and community. Be Compassionate • Open hearts assume the best. Professionalism gives the best. Accountability ensures the best. • We respect each other and hold each other accountable for a better professional atmosphere. • We communicate with kindness for continuous improvement of work relationships.

Sincerely, Patty Hector

Employees of the Month

Anna: Bryant Anna has gone above and beyond to assist new employees at the Branch. She has remained calm, helpful, and patient through the recent changes. Her positive attitude is contagious throughout the Branch. Anna has continued to show her outstanding customer service to patrons no matter what. Her energy and positivity overflows to our patrons. Not only is her customer service impeccable, she has also exceeded our expectations with the seed library. The 278 members of this program shows the success of her hard work.

Mason: Benton Mason has gone above and beyond to step in not only when the Community Engagement department needed a little extra teamwork but also when the desks were short. He has taken on duties of a coworker who is on vacation and never once complained about his plate being too full. Patrons also comment on our social media programs and in the building that he always has the most polite, professional, and fun personality. (Plus, the bowties help!) He took a program that was not having great attendance

and found its niche- school teachers! He let the presenter know how the video could be improved and adjusted accordingly. Now, the program is in our top performing group!! Mason has taken on Homebound and Pocket Librarian duties while our Outreach Librarian is out. He called and spoke to each patron to let them know what was going on and that he would be assisting them. This may sound simple, but this task was tedious and can be tricky since many homebound patrons have disabilities that make phone conversations difficult. He even went out of his way to personally deliver homebound material to a patron whose application was not submitted online and left out of the rotation.

Facts about Día de Muertos • It’s two days long. Dia de Muertos occurs over the course of two days, starting at midnight on November 1 and ending November 2. • The custom has indigenous roots. The Day of the Dead has roots in indigenous Aztec culture. • Day of the Dead is not sad, it’s a celebration. While a holiday focused on those who’ve passed away, Dia de Muertos is a joyful tradition. It’s a true celebration of life, marked by costumes and makeup, festive foods, parades, humor, and decorative tributes to the dead. • The ofrenda (altar) honors the dead. A typical ofrenda is a table that’s adorned with traditional pastries and marigold petals, as well as items identified with the deceased, like photos or other personal items. • Perforated paper plays a role. Colorful tissue paper with cutouts adorn Day of the Dead celebrations. The thin paper represents the delicate nature of life, and the perforations in the tissue allow for souls to pass through for their visit. • It’s celebrated with sugar skulls. The calavera (or skull) is a central image of Dia de Muertos, and one key element of every celebration are the sugar skulls which are decorative candies. • One of the most recognizable symbols is La Catrina. La Calavera Catrina originated from a 1913 etching by Mexican artist Jose Guadalupe Posada. • It’s customary to wear Catrina-style makeup and costumes. La Catrina is the inspiration behind the sugar skull makeup and costumes worn to celebrate the holiday. • Marigolds are displayed to guide spirits. These bright orange flowers are traditionally placed on the ofrenda but can be seen everywhere throughout the holiday. Per Mexican folklore, the strong scent of the marigolds is meant to attract spirits back to their living relatives’ homes. • No celebration is complete without pan de muertos. Pan de muertos is a bread that’s sprinkled with sugar and topped with bone-shaped decorations. • Families clean and decorate their loved ones’ graves. Families visit cemeteries where loved ones are buried to clean and decorate their gravestones with candles and marigolds. Families will gather to share a meal and tell stories at the gravesite, in addition to bringing objects that were meaningful to the deceased. - Good Housekeeping

October is... Adopt a Shelter Pet Month

For millions of dogs, there’s something special about the month of October. No, it’s not holiday sweaters or Halloween treats—it’s the promise of a better life. You see, October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, which means it’s the perfect opportunity to help homeless animals in shelters all across America find loving, happy homes. Here are just some of the many ways you can help us celebrate this important time of year: • Adopt. If you are ready to open your heart and home to an animal in need, please consider adopting a pet today. • Fundraise. What better way to celebrate your love of dogs than to host a fundraiser in their honor? All you have to do is post one photo a day of your favorite rescue dog for 31 days on your favorite social media channel using the hashtag #31DaysOfRescueDogs. Ask your friends and followers to donate $1 a day to your Team ASPCA fundraiser page in exchange for 31 days of adorable doggie photos. Just $31 can help provide food, shelter and the chance at a loving home for a dog in need. • Give. We understand that not everyone can adopt a dog this October, but the good news is that you can still help find loving homes for pets in need by making a gift to ASPCA or a local animal rescue today. - Info from ASPCA.org

Shelter Pet Adoptions October 23 from 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM in Benton Join Terry Parsons of Benton Animal Control, Sarah Tharrett of PetSmart, and a bunch of waggy tails to help us celebrate adopt-a- shelter-pet month! All adoption fees will be waived for this event, and all pets are spayed/ neutered and up-to-date on their shots. PetSmart will be on-site to provide free toys, coupons, and advice for adopting your newest family member. Come out and say hi to these adorable pups and kitties, and maybe give them the loving home they deserve.

Costume Closet opens October 1 Saline County Library’s annual Costume Closet is open for business starting at 9:00 AM on Friday, October 1st. Costumes are available on a first come, first served basis; the library does not place holds on costumes. We have a variety of sizes and styles. Costumes are expected to go fast, so come to the library early for a wider selection. Costumes do not have to be returned. Costumes include: superheroes princesses rock/paper/scissors pirates, vampires ...and more!

Shop the Closet LIVE on Facebook October 7th at 7:30 PM

Staff Highlight Haley Haley is the new part-time Library Assistant at the Saline County Library! Here are a few fun facts about her:

If you could choose one superpower, what would it be? Shapeshifting. I could be a bird soaring in the sky. I could fix any blemishes I might have. I could be anything I fancied for any amount of time. What is the nerdiest thing you do in your spare time? Playing video games or doing film analysis. Or video game analysis. What ’s the strangest talent you have? I can make a convincing crow noise in my throat. The crows don’t seem to appreciate it though. Are you a cat or dog person (or other)? I like them both, but I have had more cats in recent years.

We get by with a little help from our friends! The Used Book Store is back open! Come and browse at the Benton branch any time we’re open. October 17-23 is Friends of the Library Week. If you see a Friend while you’re visiting, make sure to thank them for their hard work!
