The Times Are Changing

BUT SOME TRADITIONS REMAIN THE SAME

In August, we crowned a winner of the Take a Hike Summer Giveaway: Congratulations to Jeff Rosenfeld! Have fun using your backpack full of hiking essentials. And for the rest of you who weren’t winners this time around, keep your eyes peeled for when we announce the next giveaway. On Sept. 27, we hosted our ninth annual Dentistry From The Heart event. It was a successful year, with over 70 patients treated and over $25,000 worth of free dental work provided to those in need. It was so wonderful to see the entire team at Sierra Crest volunteering their time to help our community. It’s always our favorite day of the year in the office because it’s our chance to give back to a community that has been so supportive of us. We realize that some people wait all year for this event so they can get dental work they’d otherwise be unable to have for a variety of reasons, and we’re humbled to be able to help. It’s a treat to see all those smiling faces come in and exciting to see even bigger smiles walk out. We’re so thankful to all our patients for sticking with us through the big transition we face with Dr. Colpitts’ exit from the practice. Because this is the last newsletter that will be going out before he leaves the practice he worked so hard to build and maintain all these years, I want to use this opportunity to share my appreciation for him and the professional mentorship he has given me. Those of us who have been privileged to be patients or staff of Dr. Colpitts over the years know what a truly remarkable dentist and person he is. His gentle touch, excellent dentistry, and caring personality have affected us all, and it is an honor to have the opportunity to take over his practice. Though he will be deeply missed, we all wish Dr. Colpitts an endless supply of perfect days skiing, biking, and enjoying this beautiful place we are all lucky enough to call home — he has truly earned them. –Dr. Delaney

It’s been a busy summer for Sierra Crest Dental! From our team-building day at the Tahoe Vista Treetop Adventure course to volunteering at the 24th Annual Truckee River Day, it’s been nonstop fun. As fall approaches, we are keenly aware that Dr. Colpitts is rapidly approaching his departure from the practice. As we get closer to that moment, it becomes a little more difficult to say our goodbyes. I’m thrilled to be so busy helping our wonderful patients and staff, and we’re all eager to continue providing excellent quality of care.

Just One More Bite

HOW THE CLEAN PLATE PHEN

wasting food. Most people have, at some point, heard an adult say to a child, “Eat up; there are starving children in the world.”

As you celebrate your last backyard barbecue, consider this: If someone puts three helpings of potato salad on your plate, would you feel pressured to finish it? According to nutrition experts, this pressure to finish your plate is making people indulge a little too much. Dubbed the “clean plate phenomenon,” this overindulgence is troubling. Researchers have discovered that people feel pressured to clean their plates even when they feel satisfied or full. Even people who don’t fill their plates all the way often reach for that last piece or second helping because “one more bite won’t hurt.” Experts speculate that this compulsion could have stemmed from habits passed down from World War II, when rationing food was required for most, or from a fear of

But all those “one more bites” add up. Researchers from Vanderbilt University conducted a study in which participants were served individual plates with any number of cookies piled on top. They were instructed to eat three cookies, and afterward, researchers asked each of them if they wanted more. Those who had only one or two cookies left on their plates were more likely to indulge in a fourth or fifth cookie, while those who had no cookies left or had too many cookies left said they were full.

Despite what you think about your own diet, this isn’t a problem sequestered to certain parties. Studies have found

MEET JOEY & MONIE!

Hi, I’m Joey! I’m 8 years old and have been living my best life with my mom, Deanna, after she adopted me about five years ago. I ran away from my old home looking for love, and, boy, did I find it! I get lots of treats and love from two moms now. How lucky am I? It was hard to get used to my newer mom, Jamie, at first because I wanted all of Deanna’s attention for myself. But now, we love to chase each other around the house and wrestle. I secretly love her forced cuddles, but don’t tell her that! I also love it when they take me hiking, wakesurfing, and sometimes even to CrossFit. I’m in great shape! My best friend, Monie, is a big part of our family too. She was named after my moms’ favorite bartender, Mona, because they have the exact same colored fur … or maybe you call it hair. Either way, they couldn’t resist! Monie can be sassy, but you know she likes you if you get some love bites or scratches. I’m proud to say I get those every day. October was a big month for all of us because my moms finally got married. Now we’re one big happy family! Monie and I really do live the good life, and I can’t wait to see what new adventures come our way.

COLLECTING FOR THE EDDY HOUSE

MENON MAY BE KILLING YOUR DIET

WE CAN HELP THE YOUTH OF RENO

that plates and portion sizes in the U.S. have increased by about 20% since the 1970s. The same psychology that propelled humans to eat just a little bit more to survive is now contributing to serious overeating and a staggering calorie intake. There are a few simple tricks you can use to break this habit. Use smaller plates or measure out your food portions so you can clean your plate without guilt. You can also get into the habit of leaving a few bites on your plate to retrain your brain that it’s okay to not finish your food. (You can use your leftover food for compost or save it for later!) With a little effort and intention, you can break free of the pressure to clean your plate.

We recently learned that the state of Nevada has the highest rate of homeless youth in the country. This was shocking to hear, and the minute we did, we knew we wanted to help. Reno, Nevada, currently has over 3,500 youths with no steady roof over their heads or any tangible comforts of home. This can be a daunting way to face life’s challenges at a time when they should instead be seizing life’s opportunities. The Eddy House is a nonprofit organization with the objective to end youth homelessness in Reno. They’re currently a drop- in resource center for people ages 12–24 who need standard care and comforts like food, clothing, and showers. They recently purchased a new building with the intent to develop it for 24-hour care. They’ll be able to house up to 50 people overnight, and the building will have a kitchen, laundry facilities, classrooms, a therapy space, bathrooms, a technology space, and medical support. They welcome any and all contributions to help make it happen. Sierra Crest Dental wants to partner with our wonderful clients to contribute to the mission at The Eddy House. So, from Oct. 25 through Dec. 5, we’ll be collecting donations on their behalf. They need age-appropriate clothing in good condition (mostly for people ages 19–23), unopened and nonexpired snack foods, and toiletries like deodorant, razors, and women’s sanitary products. Drop off your donations at our offices any time during normal business hours. Anything you can spare will be immensely appreciated. These young people have dreams, aspirations, and potential that they need a chance to tap into. We’ve all gone through rough patches in our lives, and sometimes we just need a helping hand to get back on track. The effects of a warm bed, a hot shower, and clean clothes can go a long way. Let’s work together to help The Eddy House with their inspiring mission.

evergreen trees are a spectacular backdrop, home to wildlife like deer, rabbits, black bears, and bobcats. Riparian habitats host quail and wrens while red-tailed hawks and bald eagles soar overhead. If hiking and biking aren’t quite your speed, the Auburn SRA offers another unique activity. Recreational gold panning, as well as panning for other natural minerals, is permitted by way of the “hands and pans” method. If you’re lucky, you might walk away with a few flecks of gold in your pocket. Be sure to check with the recreational office for important laws and regulations to follow. The Auburn State Recreation Area is great to visit at any time of year, but there’s something special about seeing it as the seasons change. So don’t miss your chance to get out there and explore its seasonal beauty.

Situated in the heart of California’s legendary gold country, Auburn SRA is a 40-mile stretch along the north and middle forks of the American River. Over 100 miles of trails with varying degrees of difficulty means there’s an option for everyone, but the Foresthill Divide Loop Trail is a popular choice for a moderate workout. At about 10 miles round trip, it’s a great way to spend a day biking or on foot.
