THE BEAUTY OF A MOTHER’S LOVE

Wishing All Moms a Happy Mother’s Day

It’s often said that a mother’s hug lasts long after she lets go, and how true I find this to be. Nine years ago, I lost my mother, Gloria Jean Kendall. For my entire life, I was always a big mama’s boy — so much so, that my wife would often tease me about it. I would call my mom on a daily basis just to chat and check in. To say I miss her is an understatement. Not a day goes by that I am not reminded of her kindness, passion for life, and the unconditional love she had to share. The world today is a better place because my mom lived in it, and I’m a better man because of her influence. She was the sweetest and kindest person you could ever meet — she’d truly give the shirt off of her back to a total stranger and would go to the ends of the Earth to protect her family and children. I certainly won the mom lottery! Mothers love us unconditionally, teach us some of the most important life lessons, cheer us on from the sidelines, pick us up when we are down, and are always there to make some of the best meals we will ever have in our lives. And, they do all of this while holding their family together, maintaining the household, holding down careers, and driving children all over town to get everyone to where they need to go. How do they do it?

invested in their lives. I am a better father because she has shown me such a great example of being a parent.

My wife is also the one of the best mothers in the world — I am extremely lucky to have been raised by an amazing mom and to have another one in my very own home. I am so fortunate to have spent the past 22 years raising our six kids together. She is the most dedicated mom ever

My wife also had an excellent mother who showed her the ropes as she grew up. I am truly so grateful for my mother-in-law, Shelly Murphy. I often hear some cringe-worthy mother-in-law stories, but unlike some mother-in-law relationships, I truly love and adore mine. I love having her and Ron join us on vacations, and it’s a blessing having her in my life.

THE WORLD TODAY IS A BETTER PLACE

BECAUSE MY MOM LIVED IN IT, AND I’M A BETTER MAN BECAUSE OF HER INFLUENCE.

To all mothers and mother figures out there, happy Mother’s Day! Enjoy the day because you truly deserve it!

and never stops thinking about our kids and what we can do to help raise them the best we can. The love that my wife has for our kids is astonishing — her world revolves around them and she is completely

WHAT ARE CRAVINGS? HOW DO I STOP THEM? HOW PLAYING THE LONG GAME HELPS OVERCOME CRAVINGS

However, the brain

how it currently operates. Instead, you might want to consider accepting your cravings, but make slow and deliberate changes to how you satisfy those cravings. For example, if you’re craving potato chips, why not try kale chips or another crunchy but healthier alternative that you already enjoy? If you’re craving soda, why not crush some fresh fruit into sparkling water instead? Make it a treat, make it special, but make it healthier.

Think about it: Does your body love circulating excess sugar

Cravings — they can feel like a comforting friend or a gut-punching enemy, depending on what you’re craving. An estimated 90% of people experience cravings, and, believe it or not, not all cravings are bad. Leaning into our healthy cravings can help establish a healthy diet. Don’t worry, we’re thinking the same thing: “If that’s the case, why do we crave sugary snacks and fatty foods the most?!” It’s complicated, but understanding your brain is a great place to start. WHAT ARE CRAVINGS, REALLY? Decades of research have proven that cravings start in our brain, not our body. This might be shocking for some, since it was commonly believed for a long time that if you were craving a steak, you were probably low in iron.

that can lead to health complications, or does your brain enjoy sugar more? After all, sugar releases the feel- good neurotransmitter

dopamine, which our brains love. A chocolate milkshake or lemon bar helps us feel good by literally triggering our brain’s pleasure centers.

Eating more filling, nutrient-dense food and getting more sleep are also great ways to fight cravings. It leaves little time or room for binging on bad foods. However, a six-month 2018 study in the

National Institutes of Health has shown that flexibility in your diet can make a difference for making real, meaningful changes to your lifestyle long term. By overcoming shame and accepting your cravings, you won’t fear making a single mistake as much. It’s all about playing the long game.

FUN TOOTH FACTS

You can call us biased here at the office, but teeth are amazing and fascinating! After all, when you care for your teeth and brush and floss regularly, you are actually taking care of a part of your skeleton — how cool! Here are some fun facts about your teeth you may be surprised to learn. TEETH ARE UNIQUE TO EACH INDIVIDUAL. You’ve likely seen on true crime shows on TV that police are able to use dental records to identify victims. Just as fingerprints are “uniquely yours,” your teeth and the pattern in which they sit in your mouth are different from every other person’s. Your smile is truly one of a kind! EACH TOOTH HAS ITS OWN JOB. Just like employees at the office, each tooth serves its own purpose and has a specific job. Our eight

Our eight premolars, or bicuspids, help us to grind up food, and the 12 molars are the strongest teeth to help crush up food.

TOOTH ENAMEL IS THE HARDEST PART OF YOUR ENTIRE BODY. Your tooth enamel on the outer layer of your teeth is stronger than your bones. But that doesn’t mean it can’t get damaged. One important thing to know about tooth enamel is that if it ever does get damaged, it can never repair itself or heal by itself. To prevent damage to your tooth enamel, proper brushing and flossing are necessary.

front teeth, or incisors, help us to take bites of food. That’s why they’re usually the first teeth to pop through our gums when we are babies. The four canine teeth, or cuspids, are very sharp and help to tear food up as we chew.

Periodontal (gum) disease is an infection of the tissue that holds our teeth in place. According to the American Academy of Periodontology, roughly half of adults nationwide suffer from gum disease. Because our mouths naturally contain tons of bacteria, mucus, and other particles such as food, a buildup of a sticky, colorless substance called plaque tends to appear on our teeth. To remove this substance, regular brushing and flossing is necessary, or the plaque can become stronger and harden, leaving behind a tougher substance known as tartar. The issue with tartar is that normal brushing isn’t able to properly clean tartar off of teeth — only your dentist or oral hygienist can clean tartar off your teeth during your regular cleanings. Build-ups of tartar can get sneaky and creep below your gums and can potentially lead to periodontal disease if left untreated. Smoking, diabetes, medications that cause dry mouth, certain illnesses, and hormonal shifts can also cause gum disease. Outlining the Symptoms of Periodontal Disease Don’t Take Gum Disease Lightly
