SELF-IMPROVEMENT MONTH

T his month is Self-Improvement Month and sometimes a few small improvements can make the biggest impacts! Many people use the beginning of the year to set goals and resolutions. However, sometimes, when goals are made around a more meaningful date or time frame, they may be easier to stick with. September means back to school for some, the beginning of fall, and the return to a more normalized routine after a Improving Our Smiles, Lives, andWell-Being

gums, teeth, and soft tissue in your mouth cleaned and inspected can both prevent issues from arising and can catch any developing problems early enough to properly treat them. Why not schedule a cleaning for back to school or the beginning of fall before the holidays? Brushing and flossing are the cliche tips dentists love to dish out to all of their clients. However, they’re important! Be sure to brush at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste for at least two minutes to thoroughly clean and remove any leftover food, sugar, or plaque from the surfaces of your teeth. Flossing once a day can get rid of food particles that would normally still stick around in the crevices of your teeth after brushing. Choosing some tiny changes to make as we transition into fall and the holiday season can make big improvements to your teeth and mouth. Take care of your teeth so they can take care of you! possible to make huge changes to your diet patterns, making a few small changes can still improve your oral health. Limiting sugary drinks and foods is especially beneficial because when sugar coats your teeth, the bacteria in your mouth eats away at it and produces an acid that causes cavities. Drink more water (it can even help clean the sugar off of your teeth) and be sure to limit snacking in between meals. Coming into the office for your routine cleaning and checkup is likely the best thing you can do for your teeth. Having your tongue,

laid-back summer. Using this time to set some aspirational goals to hold yourself accountable is great — maybe you can even get rid of some bad habits as well! At Texas Sedation Dental & Implant Center, we hope we can help you to improve upon your oral health and hygiene habits. We all know that stress can be the root of high blood pressure and can be linked to headaches, digestive problems, and anxiety, but did you know it can also harm your oral health? Most commonly, stress can lead to teeth grinding, jaw issues, cold sores, or oral infections. Implementing stress- relieving activities and patterns can be beneficial. Take time to relax, exercise, do yoga, and have some “me” time to reduce stress. Bettering your diet can also help to improve your dental health. What you eat, when you eat, and how often

Remembering the Heroes Amid the Tragedy

THE EVERYDAY PEOPLE WHO SAVED COUNTLESS LIVES ON 9/11

PASSENGERS OF FLIGHT 93 While two planes hit the World Trade Center towers and one plane hit the Pentagon, another plane that headed for the White House never reached its destination. That’s because passengers aboard this flight, upon learning their plane had been hijacked, decided to rush the cockpit and overtake the terrorists. They caused the plane to crash in an empty field in Pennsylvania, saving the White House but killing everyone on board. Sad though their deaths may be, these heroic men and women continue to inspire people even 20 years later. We should never forget the tragedy of 9/11, but we should also remember these regular people who decided to take extraordinary lengths to save others.

As we approach its 20th anniversary, Sept. 11, 2001, remains one of the darkest days in American history. Almost 3,000 people lost their lives when terrorists flew passenger airplanes into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon. The infrastructural damage was severe, but the damage done to thousands of families across the country was even worse. While 9/11 remains a day of remembrance of these tragic events, it should also be a day to remember the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives to save others. These are just a few of their stories. BETTY ONG AND AMY SWEENEY After five al-Qaida terrorists hijacked American Airlines Flight 11, Ong and Sweeney, two flight attendants, used

the crew phone to call their colleagues and give them information about their attackers, including what they looked like and what seats they had been sitting in. Both attendants perished, but the information they shared helped the FBI jump-start their investigation. RICK RESCORLA A Vietnam veteran who had earned a silver star for his service, Rescorla was no stranger to stressful life and death situations. As the head of corporate security for Morgan Stanley in the South Tower, he defied orders from Port Authority to stay put and instead escorted 2,700 people out of the building before it collapsed. After that, he headed back in to look for stragglers. That was the last time anyone saw him.

WHAT IS BRUXISM AND HOW DO I TREAT IT? It’s a Mouthful!

If you grind your teeth at night, you aren’t just having a fabulous dream about eating your favorite cereal or a handful of M&M’s. Something much more serious is taking place, and you should have it checked out right away to save your teeth from damage.

As your dental professionals, we are here to tell you that there are plenty of different mouthguards — and we can help you find your exact size. You can wear this while you sleep to assist in stopping the negative effects of bruxism! The mouthguard will provide you with a barrier between your teeth, and when you bite down or clench your jaw, you are provided with a cushion to prevent any jaw pain that you may feel from teeth grinding. Call us today for assistance with teeth grinding or any dental concerns or complications. We are here to help!

Bruxism is the unconscious clenching and grinding of the teeth. Teeth grinding and gnashing typically takes place while you are sleeping, but it can also take place during the day. Stress is one of the leading causes of this condition. There are myriad signs and symptoms related to bruxism, including chipped and cracked teeth, abraded teeth, jaw soreness, jaw joint disorders, temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ), headaches, overly sensitive teeth, and jaw pain. Headaches,

tooth pain, loose teeth, jaw soreness, fractured teeth, and missing teeth may also accompany teeth grinding. To stop bruxism in its tracks, stress management is extremely important, as bruxism tends to affect people with nervous tension. However, stress and anxiety aren’t the only causes of bruxism. Abnormal bites, crooked teeth, and sleep disorders may lead to grinding your teeth. Many times, certain lifestyle choices such as drinking alcohol and smoking can also cause bruxism.

Many people are on the hunt to discover the secret to having pristine teeth. However, caring for your gums — just as well as you do your teeth — is important too! Luckily, September is National Gum Care Month and a great time to brush up on your entire oral routine.

1. Sprinkle chicken with 1/2 tsp salt and 1/4 tsp pepper. Set aside. 2. In a small bowl, combine apple cider and mustard. Set aside. 3. In a large skillet over medium heat, warm 2 tsp olive oil. When shimmering, add chicken thighs top-side down. Cook for 4 minutes, then flip and cook for 4 more minutes. Transfer to a plate and cover with foil. Wipe the skillet clean. 4. Heat the remaining oil in the skillet, then add sliced apples, remaining salt and pepper, and rosemary. Cook for 5 minutes. 5. Return the chicken to the skillet and add apple cider-mustard mixture. Cook for 5 minutes, then serve sprinkled with rosemary! TAKE A BREAK

Daily care and focus are essential to maintaining healthy gums. After all, unhealthy gums can lead to gum disease, and gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Instilling a gum care routine into your daily life is paramount to help make sure you are properly protecting your teeth and mouth. Be careful when brushing your teeth. Brushing too hard can cause several problems. When you are too aggressive with your brushing, receding gums can happen as a result. When your gums recede, you become more susceptible to infections and diseases. Be sure to use a soft toothbrush; then, be gentle (yet thorough) with your brushing. Are you flossing correctly? Believe it or not, there is a right and a wrong way to floss. Many times, people floss only occasionally and when they do, they do not take the floss all the way down along the tooth’s surface. Plaque hides out on

all surfaces of the tooth, so it’s important to take the floss up and down on both sides of each tooth. Mouthwash is your best friend. Mouthwash doesn’t only just freshen your breath — it also kills the bacteria that causes bad breath, which is also a great way to prevent infections. Gum and mints are commonly used to freshen breath, but unfortunately, they contain sugar, which can be harmful for your teeth. Mouthwash is a better option. Don’t skip your dental cleanings. Oral care isn’t complete without your dental checkup! Be sure to routinely visit your dentist for deep cleanings and to make sure everything is clean and healthy. Some plaque and tartar can be tough to remove at home, but your dentist has the right tools to get it taken care of! This month, and every month, make gum care a priority. Your teeth will thank you.

The NightThat Changed Football Forever

THE NIGHT THAT CHANGED FOOTBALL FOREVER How Fantasy Football Got Its Start

complicated undertakings. In the days before the internet, members had to agree to reference the box scores in a particular newspaper’s sports pages and “draft” their teams in the same room on long phone calls, or even via snail mail. CBS Sports began offering online fantasy football leagues in 1997, and today it’s even easier to play. The sport is built right into the NFL website (Fantasy.NFL.com), and you can join a free league or start a league of your own with a click! Whether you’re a former player or a superfan who wants to play coach for a day, fantasy is a great way to stake a personal claim in the sport and connect with friends while you do it. Check out the article “How to Play Fantasy Football: A Beginner’s Guide” on NFL.com to learn the basics. It’s updated annually, so make sure you hunt down the 2021 version! When you start, don’t forget to salute Winkenbach, the official “Father of Fantasy Sports.”

Every year, 40 million Americans (and even entire offices) play fantasy football, “drafting” players from across the NFL for their virtual teams and competing for money and bragging rights. Maybe you have a virtual team in the locker room as you’re reading this! But where did the concept of fantasy football start? According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the gridiron trend began in a New York City hotel room in 1962 — a night that changed football forever. There, a group of friends led by Oakland Raiders part-owner Bill Winkenbach created the first fantasy football league. They dubbed it the Greater Oakland Professional Pigskin Prognosticators League — or GOPPPL for short. Apart

from the point values assigned to different accomplishments on the field, their original model wasn’t very far off from the fantasy football of today. “The league members would ‘draft’ actual National Football League (NFL) and American Football League … players to their fantasy franchises, and on the basis

of the actual performance of those players in games, the members would accrue points and compete against each other,” the encyclopedia reports.

Early fantasy football leagues were
