IMAGINATION IS THE FOUNDATION OF ALL GREAT THINGS INVENTIONS PAVE THE WAY

Albert Einstein once said, “Necessity is the mother of all invention.” When a problem arises, efforts are put into place, creativity ensues, and gadgets like the compass, microwave, and vacuum cleaner arise. On July 31, 1790, the U.S. patent office opened its doors as President Washington signed the patent law into existence. Samuel Hopkins, an American inventor, was the first person to receive a patent for a new way to make pearl ash and potash. Where would we be today without Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone, Thomas Edison’s lightbulb, Johannes Gutenberg’s printing press, and even Steve Job’s iPhone? While you’ve likely heard about every invention I just rattled off, there are so many inventions that have dramatically changed the world as we know it or are just fun and creative that nobody ever talks about. Here are some of the most interesting ones that leave me wondering, “Why didn’t I think of that?”:

THE GLASS TOASTER If you’ve ever made toast at home, you’re likely familiar with the struggles of ensuring that you don’t burn your toast. But, sometimes, this can be tricky. James Stumpf solved this problem for all of us by inventing the Eco+toaster — and it’s even touchscreen! HANDS-FREE UMBRELLA Okay, this one looks a little goofy but frees up your hands and keeps you dry while out in the rain. The Nubrella, invented by Alan Kaufman, is a full-body protector from the rain and is an umbrella worn over the head and secured by shoulder straps. It’s a practical contraption that even made it on Shark Tank! CORNER PICTURE FRAMES Are you the type of person who likes to display tons of photos in your home? While the inventor isn’t clear, this invention is a great way to save space and fit pictures into small spaces and corner walls in your home! It sounds wacky, but looks pretty cool.

BUTTER STICK (INSPIRED BY A GLUE STICK) Imagine the ease of buttering your toast with a glue stick containing butter instead of glue. These dispensers exist today, thanks to Luke Moon, who in 1867 while playing cricket got fed up with having to rush back and forth to butter his scones. It was at that moment that the idea was born. TWO-WAY TOOTHPASTE TUBE Have you ever stood in your bathroom, rolling and squeezing your tube of toothpaste, in an attempt to get out every last bit? Apparently,

HOW DO YOU PLAY THIS INFINITE GAME? BUSINESS IS A NEVER- ENDING GAME “The Infinite Game” by Simon Sinek is among the greatest motivational books you can get your hands on. He gives readers an inside scoop on the importance of adopting an “infinite mindset” while “playing the game” of business. Let’s look at some of the chapters that can help you and your business.

RULE NO. 1: ALWAYS WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT RULE NO. 2: IF TICKETED FOR NOT DOING NO. 1, CALL US

We all know that wearing your seat belt is an important precaution to prevent injury or death in the event of an accident, yet, in some situations, people still forget or neglect to wear it. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2017, seat belts saved roughly 15,000 lives across the U.S. In 2021, the national rate of usage for seat belts was estimated to be 90.4%. In Georgia, it is considered a violation to drive or have a passenger in the vehicle with you who isn’t wearing a seat belt. For children, if your child is 40 pounds or more, Georgia law says that they must be wearing a shoulder and lap belt. If the vehicle does not have both, they must at least have a lap belt or you risk a fine of $50. If you neglect to wear your seat belt, the fine is $15, but the offense will go on your driving record and, in turn, your insurance rates are sure to go through the roof.

The Georgia law is a little tricky when it comes to passengers. Front-seat passengers must always wear their seat belts, or the driver will be considered in violation of the seat belt law. Children who are 8–17 must wear a seat belt while riding in both the front and back seat. However, the driver is not responsible for adults in the back seat. It should be noted that there are a few exceptions to the seat belt law in Georgia. These include:

So, you just had your wisdom teeth removed, or maybe you just had knee surgery. And now you’re taking a prescription pain medication such as oxycodone. If you took it out of its original container to take it with you on the go or to place it in a pill organizer with other pills that you take daily, you could wind up in some serious legal trouble if you’re ever stopped by the police and they find the prescription medication on your person and outside of its original container. In the state of Georgia, it’s illegal to possess drugs that aren’t in their original container. Any controlled substance that is in another container or free-floating is considered to be illegal possession, which is a misdemeanor charge in Georgia and punishable by up to 12 months in jail and a $1,000 fine. This is because police are trained to assume that the individual who is in control of the pill or drug has the intent to consume, sell, or distribute it to others. Depending on the circumstances, if, during a traffic stop, police find you in control of prescription medications that are not in their original container and suspect that you took the drugs before getting behind the wheel of a motor vehicle, you could be arrested for a DUI. The bottom line is to avoid this from happening to you by keeping all medications in their original container. MOUTHWATERING SOUTHERN BBQ

Summer isn’t complete without some Southern BBQ!

INGREDIENTS

• 3 lbs boneless pork loin roast, trimmed • 1 cup water • 1/2 tsp salt • 1 tbsp pepper • 1/4 cup brown sugar

• 18 oz barbecue sauce • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce • 1 tbsp hot pepper sauce • 10 hamburger buns, split • Deli coleslaw (optional)

DIRECTIONS 1. In a 4-quart slow cooker, add the roast and 1 cup of water. 2. Cover and cook the roast on high for 7 hours or until tender. 3. Once tender, shred the meat. 4. Return the shredded meat to the slow cooker. Stir in salt, pepper, brown sugar, barbecue sauce, Worcestershire, and hot pepper sauce. 5. Cover and cook on the lowest setting for an hour. 6. When finished, serve barbecue on buns with coleslaw (optional).
