Yearling Manager Renee Connolly

David Ellis and Joe Walls inspecting yearlings at Rich Hill

Our Group 1 winning son of Monsun, the magnificent Vadamos continues to tick all the boxes. His progeny continued to sell well with 19 of his 20 second crop yearlings selling for an average of $92,000 at Karaka earlier this year. We are very excited about the prospects for Vadamos’ progeny going into his classic season. From limited two-year-old runners in New Zealand he has sired two impressive winners and some talented trial performers. He has only had three runners in Australia for two placegetters. With his progeny residing in many of Australasia’s leading stables we have a lot to look forward to. Our two proven sires Shocking and Proisir continue to go from strength to strength. Proisir is now firmly established as one of New Zealand’s leading young sires. He has consistently up graded his mares and his commercial returns reached new levels with a top price of $230,000 for his yearlings at Karaka 2021. Shocking has added another three new Australasian stakes winners to his tally this season. He is a proven Group 1 sire standing at a very affordable fee. To complement our superb stallion line-up, we have an experienced and dedicated staff and safe and well-maintained facilities to ensure your young horses are given the best start in life. Please feel free to contact us or arrange a visit to the farm if you wish to discuss any aspects of your bloodstock investment.

Our stallions bring to the market place a unique blend of proven racetrack and sale ring success, established sire lines and high-class international race performance. It is a great compliment to Rich Hill and the New Zealand breeding industry that Shadai Stallion Station and Katsumi Yoshida have once again made Group 1 winning son of Deep Impact Satono Aladdin available to New Zealand breeders. His first crop yearlings sold up to $360,000 at Karaka in 2021 and his seven Book 1 yearlings averaged $110,000, which was a fantastic return on investment for breeders. Ace High our dual Group 1 winning son of breed shaping stallion High Chaparral is an excellent addition to the New Zealand industry. The continued worldwide success of the High Chaparral sire line and the quality of Ace High’s first crop foals have created a huge buzz about the future potential of his stud career. Bryan Devine 1938-2021 This year we mourned the passing of one of Rich Hill’s most enthusiastic supporters Bryan Devine . SATONO ALADDIN

By Phillip Jeffreys – CLOUGHMORE PREDIGREES

Race Record

Toughness and soundness are qualities we all aspire to instil into the thoroughbreds we breed, but many stallions nowadays have so few starts that it's hard to assess whether they are likely to pass on these essential qualities. Rich Hill's stallion Satono Aladdin definitely possesses these qualities. He raced 29 times, mainly in top Japanese events. However, stallions also need to show top-class ability on the racetrack if they are to appeal to broodmare owners. Satono Aladdin won the 2017 edition of one of the planet's most prestigious 1600 events, the Group 1 Yasuda Kinen and he didn't just win it - his time was the scarcely believable 1:31.5 . The previous year Satono Aladdin was victorious in the Group 2 Keio Hai Spring Cup. The 1400 metres took him a mere 1:19.6 to complete. Yes, this is a serious horse but do his bloodlines offer local breeders a good chance to produce top quality offspring? In my view, the answer is a resounding yes. Firstly, Satono Aladdin is by DEEP IMPACT , a truly sensational Turn-To line stallion. If you have produced 175 individual stakes winners, of which 51 are Group One winners, and your AEI is 3.42, you're so far above average that it's not funny. This champion Japanese stallion has crossed well with a wide range of bloodlines, MR PROSPECTOR and DANZIG being especially prevalent. These major sires are frequently found in NZ pedigrees and it's worth noting that inbreeding to both sires can be undertaken quite safely.

I'm especially fond of the Turn-To x Turn-To cross. Thus all those mares with SIR TRISTRAM influences somewhere or other are worth serious consideration. Further strengthening my case is the fact that Satono Aladdin is out of a Storm Cat mare and Storm Cat x Sir Tristram has worked so well in New Zealand conditions. Another local sire which has shown an affinity with Storm Cat is CENTAINE (think Glamour Puss and Fay Fay). Sending a mare with the son of Century would produce inbreeding to the brilliant My Babu, a source of both speed and good looks. There has developed strong nicks between GALILEO with both Deep Impact and Storm Cat. Mares by another son of Sadler's Wells , MONTJEU , also seem especially attractive as Montjeu carries a Grey Sovereign line. And then there's Fappiano , the sire of Satono Aladdin's grand-dam. We all know that Storm Cat crosses well with Mr Prospector, but what do you do when you've already got these two sires close up. There's a simple answer - find some more MR PROSPECTOR . Finally, we have the go-to stallion of modern breeding - NORTHERN DANCER . His sons Lyphard, Storm Bird and Nijinsky already appear in Satono Aladdin but many Group winners have four or five duplications of this great stallion. For example, arguably Deep Impact's best performer is Gentildonna (Bertolini), whose 10 wins include seven Group 1 titles. This toughest of mares is inbred to Lyphard 4 x 4 and carries Danzig in her third generation as well.

ACE HIGH

Pedigree Nicks

Race Record

Ace High’s bloodlines ensure many key pattern nicks are available to Australasian breeders. His pedigree features champion sires HIGH CHAPARRAL, REDOUTE’S CHOICE and SUNDAY SILENCE, and he being from the same stallion making family of DANEHILL and NORTHERN DANCER. Mares featuring SIR TRISTRAM appeal for Ace High, 53 stakes winners already combine High Chaparral and Sir Tristram close-up in their pedigrees, 11 of these being Group 1 winners. High Chaparral’s sire-son So You Think demonstrates this Sir Tristram affiliation, two of his six Group 1 winners are amongst his 11 stakes winners bred on the Sir Tristram cross. Ace High’s damsire Redoute’s Choice has proved his own affinity with Sir Tristram - 20 Group 1 winners, amongst the 128 stakes winners to combine this sire pair in their pedigree. ZABEEL carries Sir Tristram and NUREYEV . Group 1 winners Dundeel, Princess Jenni, Fenway and Hiyaam are each sired by High Chaparral out of Zabeel mares. The Zabeel cross produces the keenly sought duplication of blue-hen mare SPECIAL through Sadler’s Wells and three-quarter brother Nureyev, this linebreeding also available via mares featuring: SAVABEEL, DARCI BRAHMA, MONTJEU, STRAVINSKY, ENCOSTA DE LAGO, RELIABLE MAN, CARNEGIE, RIP VAN WINKLE, IFFRAAJ etc. Unlike Australia many NZ-based mares don’t yet carry the potent blood of DANEHILL , making Ace High especially appealing for them.

Redoute’s Choice has had great success linebred to DANEHILL , and to his sire DANZIG . There are 14 Group 1 winners and 172 stakes winners to combine Redoute’s Choice with a Danzig line sire on their dam’s side. GREEN DESERT line mares feature amongst those well suited to Ace High: CAPE CROSS, VOLKSRAAD, SHOWCASING, POWER, INVINCIBLE SPIRIT etc. O’REILLY and TOWKAY mares suit, eight Group 1 winners and 50 stakes winners are bred on the Redoute’s Choice x Last Tycoon cross. Mares by Rich Hill’s former champion stallion PENTIRE also match well, his own High Chaparral cross producing Group 1 stars Shoot Out and Volatile Mix. MASTERCRAFTSMAN mares add appeal, with Danehill Dancer x High Chaparral/Sadler’s Wells very successful crosses. The MR PROSPECTOR sire line is particularly appealing for Ace High, High Chaparral and Redoute’s Choice having great success combined with his bloodlines. We see Redoute’s Choice and Mr Prospector featuring together within the first five generations of 42 Group 1 winners and a total of 300 stakes winners. Among the many mares carrying Mr Prospector to suit are those by: SHOCKING, ZACINTO, SWISS ACE, POSTPONED, PER INCANTO, MASTERCRAFTSMAN, RELIABLE MAN, IFFRAAJ etc.

The Andrew Carston-trained and Go Racing-owned Vadamos filly Art De Triomphe debuted with a game second placing and then followed up with her exciting win in April at Riccarton (1100m). Starting as the race favourite, she showed an impressive burst of speed and kicked off Vadamos’ southern hemisphere career in good fashion. “ Art de Triomphe is very promising, what she’s doing at two is very exciting because she’s only going to get better as she develops. Her long-range goal is the Gr.1 1000 Guineas ,” said Bosma. 1000 Guineas Spring target for Art de Triomphe An Exciting Season Ahead

Vadamos buyers back for more… Vadamos followed up his 2020 start as Karaka’s Leading First Season Sire with a very strong 2021 Book 1 Sale. His progeny sold up to $170,000 - 19 of his 20 yearlings found buyers - they averaged nearly 5-times service fee at $92,000.

VADAMOS

German breeding has always emphasised soundness and stamina. A fine product of the strict and rigorous breeding program of the German thoroughbred industry is the late MONSUN, he a remarkable sire-outcross in the northern hemisphere. Monsun's success is in a large part due to his wonderful affinity with NORTHERN DANCER line mares. 18 of Monsun's 22 Group 1 winning progeny feature Northern Dancer close up in their dam's pedigree. Looking wider at Monsun's total Group winning progeny we see 53 of his 67 group winners all featuring Northern Dancer. With Vadamos carrying just one Northern Dancer line within his first six generations, mares bringing further lines are especially attractive breeding prospects. Northern Dancer's son NIJINSKY has combined exceptionally well with Monsun, as too DANZIG . It is no surprise to see the DANEHILL cross work so well, he combining Danzig with Natalma. Another Danzig sire-son to cross well with Monsun is GREEN DESERT , and mares by sire-sons VOLKSRAAD, CAPE CROSS, SHOWCASING and INVINCIBLE SPIRIT all suit Vadamos. Mares by Rich Hill's own former champion stallion PENTIRE are ideally suited to Vadamos. Pentire's dam-sire Mill Reef features in no less than 42 of Monsun's 67 group winners, and his sire Be My Guest features in nine Monsun stakes winners including Timeform’s Horse Of The Year MANDURO. LAST TYCOON has both Northern Dancer and Mill Reef in his pedigree, making O'REILLY mares especially appealing for Vadamos. O'Reilly also features seven lines of

the famous Number 9 speed family in his pedigree, this family is prevalent in many of the pedigrees of Monsun's stakes horses. Mares with multiples of: Nasrullah, Fair Trial, Court Martial, My Babu, Royal Charger, Turn-To etc all suit Vadamos. SIR TRISTRAM is another to suit Vadamos, he bringing in Mahmoud, My Babu, and Royal Charger together with double-lines of both Princequillo and Selene. Through dam-sire PEINTRE CELEBRE appears influential stallion NUREYEV close-up. Linebreeding to influential mare SPECIAL is widely recognised as a key factor towards breeding stakes performers. Mares adding further NUREYEV , or brothers SADLER'S WELLS and FAIRY KING look especially appealing. The many sires affording this opportunity include: ZABEEL, SAVABEEL, DARCI BRAHMA, MONTJEU, HIGH CHAPARRAL, STRAVINSKY, ENCOSTA DE LAGO, SHINKO KING, CARNEGIE, RIP VAN WINKLE, IFFRAAJ etc. MR PROSPECTOR has had very good success combined with both Monsun and Peintre Celebre. This opens the way for mares featuring sires such as: SHOCKING, ZACINTO, SWISS ACE, POSTPONED, PER INCANTO, MASTERCRAFTSMAN, RELIABLE MAN, IFFRAAJ etc. Peintre Celebre like Monsun, has crossed exceptionally well with DANEHILL which adds further Vadamos-appeal for Danehill-line mares. Among the many Danehill-line mares suited to Vadamos are those with: REDOUTE'S CHOICE, FASTNET ROCK, FLYING SPUR, DANZERO, DARCI BRAHMA, KEEPER, DANSKE, DANASINGA etc.

The

LEADING THIRD SEASON SIRES 2020/21 Upgrader PROISIR

Pedigree Nicks

Proisir’s pedigree compliments many of Australasia’s top sire lines, evidenced in his quick progression as one of New Zealand’s emerging young sires. SIR TRISTRAM'S affinity with Danehill-line horses is well established. He crosses well with both Proisir's champion sire Choisir and damsire Encosta De Lago . Sir Tristram’s influence is widespread: ZABEEL, KAAPSTAD, SAVABEEL, GROSVENOR, DARCI BRAHMA, DON EDUARDO mares etc. ZABEEL offers a line through Nureyev back to influential mare SPECIAL , this the dam-line of Encosta De Lago's sire Fairy King. Duplication of this famous family through NUREYEV, SADLER'S WELLS, FAIRY KING etc is highly sought, Proisir’s stakes winners LEVANTE, VITESSE BO, AIMEE’S JEWELL and NZ Oaks placed FEEL THE RUSH are linebred as such. Sires that afford this breeding opportunity with Proisir include: ZABEEL, SAVABEEL, DARCI BRAHMA, MONTJEU, HIGH CHAPARRAL, STRAVINSKY, SHINKO KING, CARNEGIE, RIP VAN WINKLE, IFFRAAJ etc. It is noteworthy that Choisir's own sire Danehill Dancer has had great success crossed with Sadler's Wells, 21 Group 1 winners bred on the cross . With DANEHILL appearing four generations back in Proisir's foals, and DANZIG five, it is well worth breeding Danehill-line mares and other branches of the Danzig male line. The

success of Encosta de Lago crossed with Danehill-line mares reinforces this. Mares by PERFECTLY READY, REDOUTE'S CHOICE, FLYING SPUR, DANSKE, KEEPER, DANASINGA, VOLKSRAAD, BERTOLINI, CAPE CROSS etc are well suited. Champion sire MR PROSPECTOR through sires such as: SHOCKING, ZACINTO, SWISS ACE, POSTPONED, PER INCANTO, MASTERCRAFTSMAN, RELIABLE MAN and IFFRAAJ etc will pick up nicely with his female line via Encosta De Lago. NIJINSKY has combined well with Choisir, and Nijinsky crossed with Proisir is seen in exciting Hong Kong galloper TEMPEST EXPRESS (HK), and via Royal Academy in the pedigrees of RIODINI and VANCOOGA. O'REILLY is an attractive linebreeding option for Proisir. Danehill Dancer bred over an O'Reilly mare resulted in Gr.1 Coolmore Stakes winner STEPS IN TIME, and O'Reilly crossed with Danehill blood features in 33 individual stakes winners . Encosta De Lago has crossed well with O'Reilly's sire LAST TYCOON , resulting in 15 stakes winners which include four-time Group 1 winner ALINGHI. PINS mares appeal, they create a sex-balanced double of speed influence Lunchtime up close. RED RANSOM is another suited to Proisir, he present in the pedigrees of smart Proisir performers VANCOOGA, TEMPEST EXPRESS and SCENIC WARRIOR.
