The American Physical Therapy Association’s #ChoosePT campaign is raising awareness about the dangers of prescription opioids, and encourages consumers and prescribers to choose safer alternatives like physical therapy for most chronic pain management.

Every year millions of Americans use opioids to manage pain. Doctor- prescribed opioids are appropriate in some cases, but they just mask the pain—and reliance on opioids has led to the worst drug crisis in American history. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American College of Physicians, and theNational Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine have issued guidelines and reports urging health care providers to pursue safe nondrug alternatives, including physical therapy, for most non–cancer-related pain treatment. Physical therapists (PTs) treat pain through movement, hands-on care,
and patient education—and by increasing physical activity you can also reduce your risk of other chronic diseases. A recent study published in Health Services Research found that patients who saw a PT before trying other treatments for low back pain were 89% less likely to need an opioid prescription. If you knowsomeone in pain, encourage them to talk to their physician or PT about safeways tomanage pain.

Why do your joints ache in cool weather? Your joints are filled with fluid and so are your muscles, ligaments and tendons. When the air temperature is cooler, tissues tend tobecome tighter,drierandstiffer.This is especially true for extremities moreexposed to theelements and away from the core of the body.Hands,shoulders,knees, hips and ankles are most susceptible. Arthritis pain is directly correlated to the limitation of mobility in your joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons. The more freedom of movement in your joints, strength in your muscles and improved circulation, the less you are affected by arthritis inflammation and pain.

Gluten-Free Pumpkin Cookies
INGREDIENTS • 1 ripe banana mashed • 1/2 cup pumpkin puree • 2 large eggs • 1/2 cup peanut butter • 3 tbsp coconut oil melted
• 1/2 cup oat flour ground • 1/2 cup almond meal • 1/2 tsp baking powder • 1/2 tsp baking soda • 1/8 tsp salt • 2 tsp Vietnamese 5% Oil Cinnamon • 1/4 tsp Frontier Allspice • 1/4 cup mini chocolate chips • 1/2 cup dried cranberries cherries
• 2 tsp Vanilla Extract • 3 tbsp maple syrup • 1 1/2 cups gluten-free rolled oats
DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease or line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. Set aside. In a mixing bowl stir together mashed banana, pumpkin, eggs, peanut butter, coconut oil, vanilla and maple syrup until well combined. Add in oats, oat flour, almond meal, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, allspice, chocolate chips and dried fruit; stir to combine. Refrigerate for 5 minutes to harden. Drop cookies by spoonfuls on prepared baking sheet. They won’t expand much, so feel free to press them down, slightly, and make them as uniform as possible to ensure even baking. Bake for about 12 minutes until lightly browned.
