AWARDS DINNER 2022 3

2 SPORT SWANSEA

I'd like to take a minute to thank the Sport Swansea staff and the Student Sport team: Sadie, Charlotte and Rhodri, as well as Tom in our Students’ Union. Their commitment to sport is outstanding, and has been a great motivation for me in my time as Sports Officer. Sadie, Charlotte, Rhodri, and Tom, thank you for everything you do and for all your support these last few years. My special thanks go to the Sports Exec Team who are an invaluable part of our sporting community. From loading buses early on Wednesday mornings, to helping with Captain’s Bar at Jack Murphy’s! I have loved being able to work with this team of student volunteers and without them we would not have been able to facilitate some outstanding events this year, such as the first Alumni cup, Green Collar Boxing and our annual Ladies day! My deepest thanks to the Students’ Union team, who I have had the pleasure of working with for the last two years. It has been my honour to serve Swansea University students in this role, it hasn’t been an easy ride, but I hope I have done you proud. Sport is incredibly important to all of us in this room, it has the power to unite us, gives us confidence in ourselves, and helps us to become better people. I hope that those who are leaving us this year will continue to be a vocal supporter of the Green and White Army, and to those continuing next year, you all have my best wishes. Sport at Swansea University is in safe hands.

Good evening everyone and welcome to the 2022 Sport Swansea Awards!

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the Sport Swansea Awards 2022. After a two year break, I am thrilled to be back here in person with you all to celebrate another fantastic year of sport at Swansea University. Despite the interruptions of the last couple of years, sport in Swansea has come roaring back and I am so proud to see our athletes and clubs continue to develop and succeed. I’d like to offer my heartfelt thanks to each and every one of our athletes in the room this evening. Sport Swansea would be nothing without the passionate, hardworking, and dedicated athletes that are here tonight to celebrate. This last year has produced some astonishing highs: from the Swimming Club reaching their best finish in BUCS, to the Surf Club expanding their offering of beginner’s lessons, capped off by a great performance by our Men’s Rugby Team to bring the Varsity Cup home after beating Cardiff, 20-13! I’d also like to applaud the charitable endeavours of many of our clubs, who have done so much to raise money for causes such as Movember, for which I am delighted we raised over £30,000; our support for diversity and inclusion through the Rainbow Laces initiative; and the donations to the Ukraine support appeal. This truly is the spirit of Swansea, and I am so proud to be part of this community. Women’s sport has come on leaps and bounds at Swansea since I joined the University. I am delighted that for the first time Women’s Cricket was included in Varsity coupled with amazing performances by Women’s Football, who won their league conceding just two goals all year, and the Women’s Rugby team, who again competed at the Swansea.com Stadium at Varsity. Women’s Basketball and Badminton won the league and cup double this season, among other achievements. Our female athletes are an inspiration to us all and long may that continue.

Congratulations to you all on such an incredible year, and for those of you receiving awards, they really are deserved.

Diolch. Thank you.

JOHN COURTNEY SWANSEA UNIVERSITY HEAD GROUNDSMAN

John joined Swansea University in November 2005, and during that time has been integral to preparing and maintaining high class facilities for our student clubs, community groups, professional and local clubs.

During his tenure, John has managed the preparation of the grounds for many high-profile events which include:

European Touch Rugby Championships, 2014. IPC European Athletics Championships, 2014 (a four day turn around between the Rugby and IPC event!) FISU World University Championships Rugby Sevens, 2016.

Celtic Games Athletics International, 2016. Welsh Athletics Junior International, 2018. British Schools Athletics International, 2019.

Several Welsh Varsity events, including allowing the first pitch to be transformed into a fan zone, then having to get it ready again within 3 weeks for the touch rugby season!

Additionally, Swansea Bay Sports Park and our Sketty Lane facilities were a Team Base during the 2015 Rugby World Cup, hosting Canada, Fiji and New Zealand, as well as the Wales Women Rugby in 2020, in the lead up to their rearranged Six Nations Fixtures. Swansea University was also nominated for and won the Institute of Groundsmanship (IOG) ‘Best Maintained Artificial Pitch of the Year Award’ in 2009 and 2012 for our Hockey Pitches, based on the maintenance work carried out by John and the team.

AWARDS DINNER 2022 23

22 SPORT SWANSEA

John maintains the pitch to an extremely high standard, making it the envy of many clubs in our league. SUFC said: "In our three years in the second tier of Welsh Football, we have benefited enormously by being able to play open attacking football on an excellent playing surface." The maintenance work that goes into all our surfaces allows us to maximise usage for students and partners alike. In 2019, we hosted over 650 bookings across all grass pitches, and we are on course to surpass that this year. John has a ‘can do approach’, always thinking ‘how can we make this work’. John never complains when last minute requests come in for usage, and always ensures the grounds are at the highest standard for all to use.

Throughout the last 17 years, we can count on one hand how many times we have had to postpone a fixture due to bad weather. Our grounds will be playable when the rest of the pitches in Swansea are not, which shows the dedication of John and his team, who do their utmost for student sport. John goes above and beyond to find solutions, like willingly converting a tennis court to a netball court to allow for more participation, and finding storage here, there, and everywhere! John makes everyone else’s lives a whole lot easier by working so hard in his. This award has been a long time coming.
