THE NEWSLETTER ABOUT YOUR HEALTH AND CARING FOR YOUR BODY

THE FUTURE OF PHYSICAL THERAPY

Part 2: Mitali Bahinipati Prepares to Follow in Her Father’s Footsteps

H ello, everyone! I’m taking over the newsletter University of Evansville in fall 2020. As you may remember from my father’s cover article last month, I plan to eventually study physical therapy with the hopes of returning to Synergy Therapeutic Group someday. Of course, this plan isn’t that far-fetched for me. I have always had an attraction to being around people and studying anatomy. Even as a little girl, I would sit at the kitchen table with my mom to review the bones and muscles in the body. I was fascinated with the way our bodies worked from a young age, and this curiosity made me believe that I was destined for a career as a doctor. But a few years ago, the prospect of medical school was no longer appealing. My love for anatomy and physiology was still there, but the desire to work in a hospital was not. Meanwhile, I would continually see patients improving after their appointments with my dad at Synergy Therapeutic Group. People would often leave our clinic with happy smiles, not the pain they came in with. That was the kind of care that I wanted to provide patients. I didn’t want to spend my life continually treating people with painful procedures or medical methods that were no longer working. I had been around physical therapy my whole life, but it wasn’t until I was confronted with what I truly wanted to do when I grew up that I realized it could be a career option. Since this realization, my dad has been getting me more involved in the clinic. (You may have even seen me helping out!) I’ve been observing and hearing people’s stories throughout their journey to healing, and it’s only fueled my passion for this career. responsibilities from my parents this month so I can share my story. I began my senior year of high school this fall, and I’m actively working toward my goal of attending the

Within the next year, I’m excited about the possibility of continuing my education at the University of Evansville. I knew Evansville was the place for me because my fear of college eased during my tour there. I was homeschooled until second grade, and since then, I have had less than 20 peers in each classroom. Evansville gave me that same close-knit vibe rather than the vastness of lecture halls and massive classes. Professors even knew their students’ names! The cherry on top was the fact that Evansville has an amazing physical therapy program with all brand-new equipment. After six years of schooling — possibly at Evansville — I know my dad wants me to visit other facilities and learn more through residencies and programs. Wherever I end up, I know I can’t wait to become fully engrossed in a field that has long fascinated me.

And someday you just might see me offering treatment back where it all began: Synergy Therapeutic Group.

TOO BUSY TO WORK OUT? 5 Simple Ways to Stay Active

Do some yoga. You don’t have to push yourself to your absolute limit in order to stay active. There are other, gentler ways to exercise than running 5 miles a day. Tai chi or yoga are excellent low-impact alternatives to keep your body fit and healthy. Reduce TV time. It can be tempting to plop down in front of the television after a long day at work or after dinner, but you can also use this time to be active. Get the family together for a walk around the neighborhood, take a few minutes to dance to some of your favorite tunes, or do some light cleaning around the house. Put a spin on date night. Forget dinner and a movie. Instead, try taking your date out for a round of miniature golf, indoor rock climbing, an evening stroll, a bike ride, or dancing. You’ll have more fun while doing your body good. Grab a leash. Having a dog gives you plenty of opportunities to stay active. If you don’t have a dog, try asking a neighbor or friend if they would like their dog walked, start a dog-walking service, or volunteer at a local animal shelter.

Being active doesn’t have to mean going to the gym every single day. An active lifestyle can be as simple as going for a walk around the neighborhood for a few minutes a day. There are plenty of ways to exercise during daily activities like shopping, spending time with your kids, or hanging around the house. Park farther away. A lot of people will spend several minutes trying to find a parking space as close as they can to the entrance of a store. However, parking a little farther away will help you score a better parking space and make sure you get your steps in for the day.

There are plenty of ways to make staying active a part of your daily routine! With enough creativity and motivation, you can turn any activity into an active one. CARCASSONNE

The Real Magic Kingdom

Every year, tourists flock to Disney’s “Magic Kingdom” and marvel at Cinderella’s iconic castle. As fun as it is to see this Florida-based attraction, it would be even more magical to step back in time and visit a real medieval citadel. What if you could walk the same ramparts as Roman legionnaires and climb the same towers as French kings? If this idea gives you goosebumps, pack your bags for Carcassonne, France. A four-hour train ride from Paris, towering above the rolling vineyards of southern France, you’ll find one of the most intact, accessible castles in Europe. With sweeping, concentric walls and 53 elegant towers, the Cité de Carcassonne is a breathtaking sight. Once an impenetrable border fortress between the kingdoms of France and Aragon, the gates now stand open to anyone curious enough to walk its cobblestone streets. In fact, you can stay in the ancient city yourself. The five-star Hotel de la Cité Carcassonne occupies a former bishop’s palace and overlooks the inner ramparts of the fortress. With medieval tapestries and gorgeous woodwork in the hotel’s interior, you’ll feel like you’re living among

French royalty. Of course, if you’d prefer lodging with the commoners, plenty of quaint bed-and-breakfasts exist just across the Aude river.

With rustic cafes, fresh crepes, and bustling crowds making their way down the twisting cobblestone streets, the surface-level experience of Carcassonne would be enticing to anyone wanting to explore the French countryside. But for those who want to delve into the history of this storied castle, grand narratives await you. Just walking the walls of Carcassonne paints a picture of the past. While the outer fortifications were built by Louis IX and Phillip III, a section of the inner wall is far older. The red brick used in this part of the construction dates back to before the existence of France itself. Roman troops first fortified the hillside town around 100 BCE, giving every stone of this site a story to tell.

If you’ve ever dreamed of experiencing medieval life for yourself, your adventure awaits in Carcassonne.

How Our Pediatric Therapy Methods Can Help Your Child Grow

All children deserve a healthy childhood and a promising start. So many parents panic when a child isn’t developing at the same rate as their peers. Sensory integration disorder (SID) is just

critical stages in their development. Instead, it’s vital to intercept your children’s habits or sensory overloading with occupational and behavioral therapies.

one common condition that can leave children lagging behind their classmates and parents confused by seemingly odd reactions to everyday life. At Synergy Therapeutic Group, we have seen children transform from overwhelmed to thriving.

At Synergy Therapeutic Group, our pediatric therapists have the knowledge to help children thrive. Treatment will begin with a parent meeting and testing for the child. This establishes a basis of understanding to encourage healthy development. Then, we begin supplying your child with the tools they need to live in their overwhelming world. We aim to build their strengths and fine motor skills through educational exercises and play.

Life with SID can feel chaotic. Children may be overwhelmed by lights, touch, and movement. They tend to cope with this anxiety by holding their hands over their ears, avoiding common tastes or textures, or reacting abnormally in social situations because their brains are processing at a much higher rate. This only adds to the hurdles of normal development. Any child can suffer from sensory issues, but children with sensory disorders often have learning disabilities. Furthermore, children with SID share common traits with children with autism but are often not diagnosed with the condition. In fact, children with autism and other developmental disorders can also have SID.

Our therapists are trained to help children at all stages of development, including those that need assistance with their motor skills, handwriting, and vision. Each therapy is designed to help your child develop into a healthy, functioning person. It may seem unbelievable right now, but many children with SID or impaired development can lead happy, healthy lives. To learn more about our pediatric therapies or to see examples of our work, visit SynergyTherapeuticGroup.com/Pediatric-Therapy. Schedule an appointment by calling (618) 529-4360.

There are many quirks or habits that children grow out of, but expecting your child to develop out of SID can be detrimental to

“I was receiving shots in my spine and buttocks before coming here. There was a free session offered and I registered. I can truly tell the difference. With targeting certain muscles, my pain is so much better. I was in chronic pain when I first arrived! I am expecting to be pain-free in the near future!”

–Patricia O.

“I came here for two reasons: my lower back injury, which happened about three years ago, and a shoulder injury. I had been doing some exercises based on the advice of my previous doctors. “After I came here, it was more beneficial for me because they guided me through the exercises properly. The exercises before were a little bit hard, but the exercises that I did here were simple and productive!”
