3 YEARS, 2 NEW PROGRAMS, 1 TEAM
It’s been three years since Team Demas came to Southington, and we couldn’t be happier to be right where we are. When Team Demas Orthodontics made the decision to move to one location, we knew we were making a choice not just to focus on our patients, but to join a great community. Most of our patients live in our neighborhood, and that gives our office the community feel that we were looking for. Each year that we’ve been here, we’ve found ways to support and give back to the place we call home to further the positive impact that orthodontic care has on a person’s confidence. This year, we’re making that happen with two new programs geared toward our community’s young people. Firstly, we’ve established a local chapter of Smile for a Lifetime, an organization that brings orthodontic care to children with financial challenges and special situations. We are also opening our free Kids Club program to encourage parents to get their kids in at the right age to screen for orthodontic issues. Because I’m trained in both pediatric dentistry and orthodontics, I can find when the time is right for your child’s orthodontic treatment — not too early, not too late, but right on time. Whether it’s braces or Invisalign, we’ll figure out the ideal treatments for you and your child. "Some patients may never need it. But for others, early intervention can be the difference between problematic teeth and catching the issue early." Though our Kids Club is called 7Up, it’s not soda we’re talking about — the name refers to the key age in dental development. Why 7? The American Association of Orthodontics (AAO) recommends that every child should have their first orthodontic screening at age 7. At this age, a child’s permanent first molars and several front teeth begin to erupt. For parents, it can seem puzzling that we’d start monitoring for orthodontic issues that early. “My dentist hasn’t referred my child to an orthodontist. Why would they need to get their teeth checked by one?” a parent might think. It’s true that the timing of orthodontic treatment varies from patient to patient. Some won’t need orthodontic care until adolescence. Some patients may never need it. But for others, early intervention can be the difference between problematic teeth and
catching the issue early. Early monitoring can help us determine if and when the time is right for your child to have orthodontic care. At age 7, we can detect the development of impacted teeth with our special radiograph. It can give an in-depth evaluation of a child’s dental eruption and bite, evaluate the jaw, and determine if there’s any need for early evaluation. Most young patients don’t actually need to begin treatment at this early age. Instead, we enroll them in our Kids Club. After they see me for an initial evaluation, they get to return periodically so our team can monitor their progress and determine the ideal time for any necessary orthodontic treatment. The best part? These easy and fun visits are free. You can give our office a call or stop by if you’d like to learn more about the Kids Club 7Up program. Oh, and there’s more on the inside about Smile for a Lifetime and how you can connect us with children in need.
Thank you for being part of this community for the last three years. We’re so grateful we get to bring more smiles to Southington!

LEARNING THAT DOESN’T FEEL LIKE SCHOOL
MENTALLY STIMULATING ACTIVITIES FOR SUMMER
The formula is simple: 1 part dish soap (Dawn or Joy work best) to 10 parts water. Optionally, you can also include 1/4 part glycerin. The process of making the solution will teach ratios and finding creative ways to blow bubbles fosters problem-solving skills and creative thinking. FOR TEENAGERS: FAMILY DINNER PARTY Cooking teaches so many important skills: math, science, nutrition, concentration, cultural understanding, following directions, creativity, time management, and more. Even better, it doesn’t feel like learning; it feels like fun. Encourage your older children to take the reins for preparing regular meals throughout the summer. You can pick guiding themes, like “a trip to Mexico” or “pasta party,” but let them choose the recipes and prep the meals on their own. FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY: AN EDUCATIONAL FIELD TRIP Field trips always inspire excitement in students, and you’ll find the same goes for your family members. You can tailor your destination to the interests of your kids for maximum engagement. If you have a family of art lovers, head to a museum for some inspiration and discussion. Kids who prefer the outdoors will enjoy a nature walk or hike. You can bring along a field guide to identify flora and fauna. These trips may not pack the thrill of a water park, but they’re fun in an entirely different way.
Every summer, parents across the country have to deal with the same delicate problem. They want to make sure their kids continue to learn without feeling like they’re being assigned tasks. After all, summer homework is every child’s worst nightmare. Luckily, you don’t have to rely on math problems and book reports to keep your child’s development from taking a two- month vacation. Here are a few mentally stimulating activities that are as educational as they are fun. FOR LITTLE ONES: HOMEMADE BUBBLES Bubbles fascinate young children, so why not spend a day making your own solution and experimenting by blowing different types of bubbles?
Take a picture with Dr. Demas while on your vacation or wherever you are hanging out this summer. Then email, mail, post it on our Facebook page, or drop it off to us. Please add your name and location of the picture. Once you send it in, we will hang it up in the office and post it online. Winners will be chosen the Friday after Labor Day.

TEAM DEMAS INTRODUCES SMILE FOR A LIFETIME TO SOUTHINGTON
WHAT WE WERE CALLED TO DO
It’s with great excitement and humility that our office is starting a local chapter of Smile for a Lifetime. We are eager for the positive impact this undertaking will have on the Southington Regional community. Smile for a Lifetime (S4L) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to create self-confidence, inspire hope, and change the lives of children in our community dramatically. The organization provides orthodontic care to children facing financial challenges and special situations. After they’ve received treatment, Smile for a Lifetime recipients are asked to “pay it forward” by donating 10–40 hours of their time to a community service project of their passion. With Smile for a Lifetime, our goal this year at Team Demas Orthodontics is to award children in need with an orthodontic scholarship through our application process. We are honored to offer these scholarships to children in our community and look forward to the opportunity to serve others. Honestly, we believe it’s what we were called here to do.
need , visit our website at teamdemas.com and click on the “Smile for a Lifetime” link under “Our Office.” After a nominee has applied, our board will evaluate the applicants, screen those who rank the highest, and award the first three recipients with a new smile at no cost! We appreciate your nominations and contributions to the cause! Thank you for your support with this new endeavor. We look forward to partnering with our patients and our community to create beautiful, life-changing smiles!

CAN I HAVE S’MORE? You’re just three ingredients away from the perfect summertime treat: chocolate, graham crackers, and marshmallows. The s’more is a fan favorite on camping trips and at backyard bonfires alike. Though they say you can’t improve perfection, we’ve found a few creative twists on the classic treat that will make your summer a little sweeter.
CREATIVE TWISTS ON THE CAMPFIRE CLASSIC
STRAWBERRY S’MORE-CAKE If you really want to wow your guests at the next bonfire, try your hand at this creative take on the summertime classic. Gooey s’mores meet fresh strawberry shortcake in a dessert that’s as delicious as it is original. Find the whole recipe, including tips on making the perfect shortcake, at aspicyperspective.com/ smores-strawberry-shortcake-recipe . S’MOREO A simple but memorable twist on the campfire classic. Grab a box of Oreo cookies, pull a cookie apart, and use that in place of your graham cracker. The cream filling will pair nicely with the chocolate and toasted marshmallow. S’MORES MILKSHAKE Too hot for a campfire? Cool down with a s’mores milkshake! The trick is to lightly toast the marshmallows in the oven so they mix well with the other ingredients in the blender. Get the recipe at spoonfulofflavor. com/2013/08/30/smores-milkshake to enjoy this sweet treat even in the heat of summer.
THE ELVIS A campfire snack fit for a king — of rock ’n’ roll, that is. This s’more pays homage to Elvis Presley’s love of peanut butter and banana sandwiches. Swap out the chocolate bar for a peanut butter cup candy and add a few slices of fresh banana between the graham cracker and marshmallow. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, you can even add some bacon. S’MORES IN A JAR Here are s’mores you can enjoy all year long. Layers of crushed graham cracker, melted marshmallow, and creamy chocolate turn a simple jar into a great dessert! Learn how to make the perfect s’mores on the go at family.disney.com/recipe/ smores-in-a-jar .
It’s the simple recipe that opens the door for creative interpretations of the classic s’more. Be adventurous this summer and see what great new s’mores you can create!
