need to see what your smile could look like after braces or Invisalign. Guess what? You can do that! Did you know we actually have a scanner in our office that gives you before and after images of your smile before you even get braces? It’s a really cool piece of technology called the iTero scanner. If you were one of the first people waiting in line when the new iPhone came out, we know how you feel. We’re always on the lookout for technology that will not only improve the work we do, but that will also make your experience at our office better. That’s why we knew we needed an iTero scanner. iTero is an intraoral scanner that can take images of your mouth before braces or Invisalign, and actually project what your results will be like after those orthodontic treatments. "You may need to see what your smile could look like after braces or Invisalign. Guess what? You can do that!" Using a wand — it looks a bit like a large toothbrush and has a camera at the end — our staff scan your teeth to take images of your smile. On a built-in screen right in front of you, you can see 360-degree images of what your teeth look like now. Then the system projects what they could look like after braces or Invisalign. Not only is iTero incredible for its powerful images, it ensures a better fit for Invisalign users. We’re able to use iTero’s digital impressions system to create molds, so you no longer have to deal with the bulky molds that make your mouth feel like it’s full of glue. With the precise wand and state-of-the-art technology, you get a better fit that can help give you better results. If you’re contemplating braces, but not quite ready to make the commitment, come check out iTero for yourself and see why we’re so excited about it. You’ll be able to see the before-and-after images from a quick scan. You might even discover a whole new smile waiting for you.
When I was in dental school in Illinois, I chose to be one of the few students to specialize in pediatric dentistry. Afterwards, I practiced for two years before going to orthodontics school. Early in my practice, I noticed two groups of people who were being underserved: children and adults who’d never had orthodontic care. I thought, “I want to help show these two groups of people the confidence orthodontic treatment can give them.” I knew it was my calling to share that with the world.
It still is, and it’s why I love this work.
Sometimes, parents ask me whether orthodontic treatment for their child is necessary. Is it a functional fix, something they need, or is it just a cosmetic fix? The answer is almost always both. I’ve shared with you the overwhelming transformations people experience when they have orthodontic treatment. You may have seen that transformation in yourself or in a loved one. But if you’re still thinking about treatment, still looking at your smile and wondering if it’s worth the investment, you might need a clearer picture. You may

THE IMPORTANCE OF SPRING CLEANING YOUR UTILITY ROOM
DON’T FORGET TO CLEAN THE HEART OF YOUR HOME
HOWOFTEN SHOULD YOU REPLACE YOUR AIR FILTER?
• Homes with minimal foot traffic (single or double occupancy) and no pets or allergies: 6 to 12 months.
• Family homes (three or more occupants) with no pets or allergies: 3 to 6 months.
• Family homes with at least one pet or minor allergies: 2 to 3 months.
• Family homes with multiple pets or allergies: 1 to 2 months.
The start of spring brings everyone’s favorite seasonal chore — spring cleaning! As you dust, vacuum, organize, and declutter, don’t forget about the one room that often gets neglected. This year, give special attention to the utility closet. The utility closet houses your furnace, boiler, water heater, A/C junction, and other similar large appliances. Homeowners often forget about these appliances because they are out of sight and out of mind, and this can cost a lot in the long run. Like all the other rooms in your home, this space needs to be kept clean. Dust, for instance, can be hard on HVAC systems. Over time, it accumulates in the HVAC intake and clogs the air filter, reducing its effectiveness and efficiency. This results in a short lifespan for your system, higher power bills, and a poorly heated or cooled home. Chewing on hard foods can be tough on your braces, and your orthodontist will probably tell you to avoid doing so. Don’t eat popcorn, caramel, anything sticky and chewy ... the list goes on. Before you know it, they’ve restricted all your favorite snacks! Jerky is likely on that list of no-nos. Between its tough skin and your delicate wires, typical jerky isn’t exactly braces-friendly, and it can be hard on your teeth. Luckily, Mister B’s Jerky Co. has found a solution with their Easy Chew jerky. Mister B’s has been making jerky for the past 20 years, and they’ve perfected a number of tasty and unique recipes, from Easy Chew and Old Fashioned to seasonal varieties. Located right here in Southington, Mister B’s makes all their jerky from high-quality ingredients. The company states, “Our Easy Chew jerkies are very flavorful and not your typical ‘rip-your-teeth-out’ jerky. They're made freshly by hand, with only the finest cuts of meat.” Because it’s so fresh, Mister B’s jerky is best enjoyed within a few weeks of purchase. It’s not full of preservatives, so it won’t last for months in your pantry, but that’s what makes it so great. The tender, tasty treats make a great snack, even for those who are unsure about dried meat. One customer explains, “I do not eat jerky, but I will eat Mr. B’s!”
In addition to changing the air filter, it’s important to schedule a routine inspection of your home’s HVAC system. This includes an inspection of the appliances themselves and any connecting ducts. Dust, dander, and mold can accumulate in the ducts and spread throughout the home, which can lead to health issues, including respiratory problems. A routine inspection will identify potential problems in your HVAC system. On top of that, you can get these systems professionally cleaned and maintained. These are simple steps that will keep your home’s air systems running smoothly for years to come. Plus, you’ll be ready for the summer months ahead!
JERKY THAT’S BETTER FOR BRACES?
You might just find your new favorite snack when you stop by Mr. B’s shop. Check out their Easy Chew for a tender, tooth-friendly version.
It’s always good to talk with your orthodontist to find out which foods will help maintain your braces, because broken wires and brackets are no fun and can delay your treatment. Remember, your orthodontist is your friend when it comes to keeping that smile strong and gorgeous. If you do feel a wire out of place, contact their office and they’ll help you take care of it.
fill in the cavity. This can take much longer. That’s why it’s so important to practice good oral care when you have orthodontic treatment. IF I HAVE FILLINGS? Your orthodontist will talk with you about how to care for your teeth when you get braces. It may be different at first, but part of getting the most you can out of braces or Invisalign is to practice good oral hygiene. Brushing and flossing have never been so important. As always, the best treatment starts with prevention. If you’re ready to learn more about getting braces, call Team Demas today for your consultation and take the first steps toward a brighter, straighter smile and a more confident you!
CAN I GET BRACES If your teeth are crowded or not properly aligned, it can be hard to keep them clean. But with any lapse in adequate oral care, cavities erupt. When your dentist finds a cavity, they seal it with a filling to stop the progression of decay and to protect your tooth. The good news is you can! Before putting braces on, your orthodontist will do a thorough exam of your teeth. If they notice any cavities, they will fill them before placing your braces on your teeth. Once your orthodontist determines your teeth are ready for braces, they’ll be able to place them over any existing fillings. The type of braces that are right for you may depend on the size and type of fillings you have. Fillings are either made up of silver amalgam, gold, composite, ceramic, or glass isomers. Large fillings might require spacers to be placed between your teeth before braces can be affixed to them. Your orthodontist may determine that clear braces, like Invisalign, are a good option because they are removable. If you develop a new cavity with Invisalign, your orthodontist can simply remove the tray and fill the cavity. You might wonder, “Can I still get braces if I have fillings?”
If you develop a cavity with bracketed metal or ceramic braces, your orthodontist may need to remove part of your bracket or braces so they can

EARTH’S MOST BEAUTIFUL FLOWER DISPLAYS Spring is here, which means flora will soon be in full bloom. Flowers can be an easy pick-me-up or a great way to add color to your home, but some people take their flower obsession to the next level by planning botanical-themed vacations. Here are some of the most impressive gardens and flower displays in the world. NETHERLANDS Holland, most famous for its tulips, always draws visitors at the first sign of spring. One of its most famous destinations, Keukenhof, located in Lisse, is among the world’s largest flower gardens. The park is 79 acres and boasts approximately 7 million flowers each year. This colorful garden is open annually from mid-March to mid-May, but mid-April is the ideal time to see the tulips.
WASHINGTON, D.C. Besides the monuments and historic buildings, one of the biggest attractions in Washington, D.C. is the cherry tree blossoms. Travelers who visit the Tidal Basin during the spring can witness 3,000 trees, which were a gift from Tokyo in 1912, flaunt their beautiful pink blossoms. The best time to see the spectacle is from the end of March through the end of April. ANZA-BORREGO DESERT STATE PARK Desert lavender, flowering cacti, pygmy poppies, and rock daisies are just a few of the many wildflowers decorating Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. The various native species are often seen weaved together to form a colorful carpet over any barren patch in the park, which is located just two hours from San Diego. In addition to flowers, visitors often spot bighorn sheep. Wildflower blossoms vary in intensity each year, but they typically begin to bloom in late February or early March. Next time you’re planning a spring trip, consider visiting one of the world’s most beautiful flower displays. No green thumb required.
