VOL 14, ISSUE 6

It’s that time again; hurricane season is now upon us. With the start of hurricane season, I need to remind everyone to get their plan in order and supplies purchased early. With all the logistics issues we are experiencing, start now, and don’t wait for any storm to get close. You will be having issues this year. Not only are we having supply issues, but we are also having insurance issues. It is looking like another carrier is either going under or shedding a truck load of policies just in time for the hurricane season. Hopefully, the special session happening at the end of May will be more productive than the regular legislative session was. Even if they do pass some new laws, we won’t see any immediate relief in terms of premiums. I will provide an update on the special session’s outcomes in next month’s article. With all the inflationary pressures we are experiencing, it is pretty safe to say that almost every homeowner is underinsured on their insurance policy. With building material costs increasing and supply chain issues causing long repair times, each homeowner should take a look and review their limits to make sure they are adequately protected in case of a loss. I don’t want anyone to only get a portion of their home rebuilt if they have a loss. Call our office now to review your policy. Not only is it hurricane season, but it’s also playoff hockey time and our beloved Tampa Bay Lightning is in the playoffs again. Hopefully next month, I can report that they have won their first two series and are playing for the Conference Championship and the right to compete for the Stanley Cup for the third time in a row! Let’s go Bolts! I can’t close this month without a quick word about the Rays and Bucs. First, the Buccaneers and their

draft. I think we can all agree that Jason Licht did a great job with this year’s draft. He started out with only six picks, but with some trading, he was able to get a few more picks to try to fill some the holes the team had. Time will tell if the picks that look good on paper can transfer to the field. The Rays are still grinding it out each and every game and doing well in the American League East. The playoffs are still a long way away, but so far, so good. Wander Franco is continuing to show why the Rays selected him and paid him the big money. He is fun to watch on the field and in the batter’s box. Until next month, –Darren

SUMMER MEANS STORMS AND RAIN Why It’s Important to Carry Flood Insurance in Florida As we enter warm, rainy summer months and hurricane season, check in on your current flood insurance policy — or consider carrying it if you don’t have any. At 1,350 miles, Florida’s coastline is the longest in the country. This means that while it certainly is the perfect place for enjoying the sun, beach, and tropical atmosphere, living in the Sunshine State also poses a great risk for floods. But the coastlines aren’t the only areas at risk! In Florida, we only sit about 6 feet above sea level, meaning the entire state could potentially suffer from flood damage. Flood insurance can potentially greatly reduce the risk of suffering significant financial loss after a major storm. But were you aware that your homeowners insurance policy does not include flood insurance protection? That’s right, it must be purchased separately. Flood insurance covers physical damage to both your property and possessions. The limits and amount it will cover depends on the limits you carry within your policy.

EXPLORING THE RISE AND FALL OF BOB BAFFERT While the Kentucky Derby may be the most famous race in the sport of horse racing, the Belmont Stakes, which takes place on June 11, is just as important. These are two of the three races that trainers need to win in order to complete the Triple Crown. Since 1978, there have only been two horses that have completed the Triple Crown, and they both were trained by Bob Baffert. Over the last 30 years, Baffert has catapulted to the peak of horse racing stardom. Baffert grew up on a cattle ranch in Arizona and got his first experience with horses when he was 10 after his father bought some quarter horses. He practiced with these horses before working as a jockey in his teens, then earned his first victory when he was 17. During Baffert’s time at the University of Arizona, he developed a reputation for training horses and was often hired by other stables. He would continue racing quarter horses until the early 1990s when he switched to thoroughbreds. Baffert would go on to win the Breeders’ Cup in 1992 and win two of the three Triple Crown races in 1997, 1998, and 2011. While he was still winning the occasional race, his biggest wins would come in 2015 when American Pharoah became the second horse to win the Triple Crown. But Baffert didn’t have to wait long to win it all again. In 2018, Justify claimed the Triple Crown, solidifying Baffert’s legacy. Unfortunately for Baffert, that legacy has come under fire in recent years. Baffert has had 30 horses that he’s personally trained fail drug tests. Under his care, 74 horses have died since 2000. In 2021, Baffert’s horse Medina Spirit took home victory in the Kentucky Derby, but a post-race drug test revealed the horse tested positive for a prohibited substance. This was Baffert’s fifth violation in a little over a year. Medina Spirit passed away suddenly later that year, causing even more controversy over the legitimacy of the horse’s win. Baffert is currently serving a suspension given by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission and Churchill Downs and can’t participate in the Kentucky Derby until 2024. When he returns, his sights will be set on his third Triple Crown win.

Flood insurance will cover the work you put in before and after a large storm, such as sandbagging your home, moving furniture, and cleaning up debris. If your home is within a 100-year flood plain, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) flood maps, flood insurance is mandatory to carry when you take out a mortgage. However, if you are outside of a high-risk zone or if your home is paid off, it is optional to carry flood insurance. Here at Vermost Insurance Agency, we offer free, competitive quotes on flood insurance from multiple insurance carriers. Give us a call today to discuss your options and see how much we can help you save!

School’s Out! What Can You Do?

4 Activities to Keep Your Kids Busy It’s summertime, which means your kids are out of school and at home during their break. This is an exciting time because you get to spend more time with your children, but it can also be stressful. Since your kids are not engaged in school every day with their peers, you may have to find ways to keep them entertained during the summer. Luckily, there are a few activities your children can do to stay busy and active while they’re on summer break. Visit your local library. Make a habit of visiting your local library once a week for your children to pick out books they can read. You can challenge them to see how many books they can complete over the summer. Although your child may read educational books for school, now is their time to pick out something they want to read just for fun. Some libraries offer summer reading programs and activities that your child can participate in. By going to the library over the summer, your child’s mind will stay engaged, and their love for reading can increase. Go to local attractions. In most states, there are history and science museums, art galleries, and zoos that you and your children can visit. If these attractions are state-funded, they often have free admission for visitors. These activities are great if your child is a visual learner. They can touch and interact with exhibits and learn more about history or science. Who said learning couldn’t be both fun and educational? Create a craft station. Do you have creative children? Then a craft station is a perfect activity to get their creative minds turning! You can either go to your big-box store and pick up some arts and crafts supplies, or you can use items from around your home, such as used printer paper, toilet paper rolls, old colored pencils or crayons, and items from nature. If you need inspiration on what to make, you can look online for different crafts your child can create. Visit parks and recreation areas. Summer camps can be expensive; luckily, some parks and recreation centers host day camps that are much cheaper than private camps. Sometimes they will have daily activities that your child can participate in to burn off some energy. If you’re looking for a place where your children can play outside and stay active, going to your local parks is a great resource. If they aren’t hosting day camps, you and your children can play outside by throwing a Frisbee, having a picnic, or going on a nature walk. Summer is an exciting time, and with these activities, you and your child can spend some quality time together!
