Yeovil College has been serving the community in and aroundYeovil formore than 130 years. The College was first formed in 1887 when Somerset County Council began formally organising Science and Art classes in Yeovil. In 1947, the first Principal was appointed to lead Yeovil Technical College and when secondary education in the Yeovil Borough was reorganised in 1974, Yeovil College became one of the early tertiary colleges to be formed in England.

About Yeovil

Known as Ivell in Thomas Hardy’s Wessex, Yeovil is mentioned in the Domesday Book as a thriving market community and is still a country town at heart surrounded by beautiful countryside. An important centre for the leather industry in the 19th century, the town is famous for its glove-making with its football club nick-named the Glovers and for making helicopters. It has numerous shops, a country park, theatre and entertainment centre. Settled in ancient times on a major Roman route through the West Country, Yeovil means ‘town on the river’. It’s south Somerset’s centre for entertainment and shopping, and is a centre for everything from top-league football to leather goods to military technology.

The name just means ‘town on the river’, which goes for most places round here, but no two Somerset towns are alike, and you’ll find that its character is unique. Yeovil is one of these towns which is much bigger than it appears. You can ramble for what seems like miles through the historic centre, built around the noble C14 church of St John the Baptist, passing many fine old buildings, and not passing up many shopping opportunities.

There’s a theatre, all sorts of arts and crafts, and the famous football club.

About the campus

Ambitious plans to capitalise on the governments T-Level and Further Education capital funding announcedby the Chancellor in the Autumn aremoving forward at Yeovil College. We are nearing completion on phase one, with over £2.2M already spent transforming 20 spaces in our campus to deliver sector leading provision in Engineering and Technology, Health, Computing Sciences and Creative Industries. Much needed technical education and training for the workforce in these sectors is now significantly enhanced with more than £1.7M in new state-of-the-art equipment providing apprentices and learners with training experiences to enhance their knowledge and skills, adding value to their CVs and in the businesses they work in. As part of phase two of our campus redevelopment plans, we have spent the past few weeks working with our scientists, health, social care and education colleagues to plan our new Health, Education and Science Centre. With our architects we have the blue-prints for a further £2.3m investment which will transform our current Ashdown Building into an incredible Health, Education and Science Centre, with four new ultra-modern specialist science laboratories, hospital ward, community health skills suite, dental nursing training lab, nursing and primary education simulation spaces, plus incredible flexible learning resource centre. It will offer students unrivalled facilities to build their knowledge and skills right up to degree level in these industries. This sector leading facility is being made possible by co- investment from the government with £1.15M of T-Level funding announced in recent weeks. To ensure that the health, science and education professionals in our region have the skills, knowledge and understanding to build successful careers, learning in environments that provide the very latest technology and equipment, we are adding a further £1.2m to transform the spaces by September 2021. In just a matter of months these facilities will receive the first T-Level learners who will be motivated by incredible surroundings and inspired by brilliant teaching.

The next bidding round of T-Level capital was announced this week and our plans for a successful submission are already well formed. New facilities for a variety of industries including Mechanical Building Services, Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Maintenance, Advanced Manufacturing and Digital Technologies will form the focus of our plans for a further investment of almost £4M. The plans are well informed by our industry partners, they are clear of their needs, the skills, knowledge and experience they need their future workforce to have. A big investment that will make a huge difference. The really big story is the final piece in the transformation jigsaw. With a clear rationale to provide our learners with the most incredible teaching, learning and assessment in spaces that deliver on every level, inspiring, facilitating, encouraging and supporting our plan to replace the buildings nearest the hospital roundabout, Kingston Building and our Learning Resource Centre are taking shape. With architects appointed in December to support us establish the blueprint for a further £25M investment to crown our campus, we plan to secure an estate which will deliver post-16 education and training to the businesses in Yeovil, South Somerset, North and West Dorset for decades to come. We will build on our success over the past six years to support the progress and aspirations of our people and to enable the prosperity of the businesses we work with.

Head of Estates Operations

The Head of Estates Operations is a new position created within the college. As part of the College Management Team, you will be tasked with taking strategic and operational responsibility for the estates and facilities function across the college site, including the design and implementation of an ambitious estate’s masterplan. You will lead and influence a team of dedicated professionals to ensure that a best-in-class service is delivered as well as ensuring that regulatory compliance is achieved across the board. You will use your commercial acumen to identify additional revenue streams for the college and use your outstanding communication and interpersonal skills to build high-profile relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Your eye for detail and excellent project management skills will enable to you take the lead on estates and facilities programmes, ensuring that key targets are hit, and deadlines are achieved.

Key Roles &Accountabilities

• To support the ongoing development of the college accommodation strategy that meets the needs of learners, staff and all other stakeholders and delivers our Strategic Plan, providing space needs assessment and space utilisation information to inform this • To provide general and specific advice on the development of new building projects and assist in the preparation of relevant capital and revenue bids for funds, working with and appointing relevant specialists. • Managing the college’s annual Premises Budget including planning, preparing and monitoring and achieving on-going efficiencies whilst maintaining an outstanding estate and delivery of all services • To conduct regular reviews of the condition of the College estate and relevant equipment and produce a comprehensive prioritised and costed maintenance and renewal plan. Implement the plan within agreed budgets by contracting work through in house labour force or contractors as required • To oversee and where appropriate, project manage new building works, extensions and refurbishments from conception, through feasibility, design, tendering and construction to commissioning and operation. Ensure projects. are completed within time and budget constraints. Selecting and overseeing work of specialists and contractors on site, monitoring such works and to be responsible for the health and safety, overseeing site works as the lead contractor as appropriate. Manage all staff within the scope of this role, ensuring their development and training is up to date • Where appropriate to prepare and apply for Planning & Building Control consents. Provide reports to assist the Finance team in making grant applications and claims • To liaise with external bodies such as Highways and Local Authorities on projects that have an impact on Campuses to ensure maximum benefit / minimum detriment to the College • To support curriculum areas in their growth and development and undertake regular College space utilisation surveys and observations to inform the accommodation strategy. • Produce regular written reports for College management and the Corporation on the progress of building projects and the condition of premises and equipment. • To manage the acquisition and disposal of leases where the College is Landlord or Tenant rent reviews and renewals including instruction of solicitors etc. • To manage in conjunction with external advisors, agents and solicitor’s documentation of sale and acquisition documents to include statutory records, land registry and title information, surveys and plans. • To support the Maintenance Team Leader with technical expertise on maintenance and minor works matters • To develop and maintain the Facilities Management system (CAFM) • Responsibility for managing the college vehicle fleet including the purchase, storage, maintenance and usage of all college motor vehicles. • Ensure that all college activities through the Property Services team are fully compliant with all relevant legislation. • Set out and implement plans for carbon reduction, energy and waste management, with responsibility for the Sustainability Plan. Lead the College Sustainability Group, sharing and developing these plans with stakeholders, encouraging engagement in sustainable initiatives across College • Responsible for, amongst others, the development, maintenance, implementation and renewal of the College Disaster Recovery Plan, , Green Travel Plan and Asset Management Plan. • To manage the outsourced contracts for cleaning and car parking.
