CELEBRATE PHYSICAL THERAPY MONTH!
For a fresh perspective on why Physical Therapy, and why choose PT first, we asked Dr. Emina Alicusic- Karic, PT, DPT, on staff here at ZPT. She reported the following information, obtained partly from our American Physical Therapy Association website: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): • “Experts agreed that opioids should not be considered firstline or routine therapy for chronic pain.” • The CDC released new opioid prescription guidelines due to the growing opioid epidemic • These guidelines recognize opioids are appropriate in particular cases • For other pain management, the CDC recommends approaches like physical therapy More and more evidence is coming out regarding the benefits of receiving physical therapy; one study, published in Health Services Research, refers directly to low back pain. Going to physical therapy first may save the patient money and “dramatically reduce the chance of receiving an opioid prescription down the road.” The results of the study also provided support that patients with low back pain who went to physical therapy first had “lower out-of-pocket, pharmacy, and outpatient costs after 1 year and reduced their likelihood of receiving an opioid prescription by 87% compared with patients who never visited a PT.” Furthermore, “the PT-first group also was associated with a 28% lower probability of having imaging services and 15% lower odds of making a visit to an emergency department.” Sources: Moveforwardpt.com, APTA.org, GetPT1st.com Dr. Marissa (Wilding) Barbee, also of ZPT, points to the following definitions from the APTA website: Who Are Physical Therapists? Physical therapists can teach patients how to prevent or manage their condition so that they will achieve long-term health benefits. PTs examine each individual and develop a plan, using treatment techniques to promote the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent disability. In addition, PTs work with individuals to prevent the loss of mobility before it occurs by developing fitness- and wellness-oriented programs for healthier and more active lifestyles. The house was designed by architect Robert Harvey Oshatz, and has the appearance of a ship looking over the village and water. Its curved concrete, curved wood, and curved steel present constant challenges for the crews. When I travelled out to Seattle for a recent meeting, I wanted desperately to go up to see the project and have Aaron tell me more about it. So, we did it. He pointed out the massive engineering feat of stabilizing thehomewithsuchanunusualdesign, the extensive craftsmanship of the interior and exterior. I truly have never seen anything like it, so I hope it is featured in an architectural magazine orTV show so that I can appreciate the finished product! Similarly, each of us has a body with unique composition,curvedareasandstructuralchallenges. We simply must take good care of what the good Lord has given us and do things each day to feed our systems with nutritious meals and to strengthen and maintain our musculoskeletal system. And just like we would want to protect our homes from the invasion of pests or robbers, don’t we need to pay attention to avoid harmful substances that can damage our bodies and deplete our energy? We know that our homes must be built on a solid rock foundation, so also our bodies must have solid core

WHAT IS DIRECT ACCESS? Direct access is exactly what it sounds like: patients having direct access to physical therapy services. This means that they do not need a physician referral or prescription in order to receive the services of physical therapists.
Not long ago, this type of open market was simply a dream for both private practice and hospital-based PTs. But today, some form of direct access exists in every state plus the District of Columbia (the most recent additions being Oklahoma and Michigan), and at the very least, a patient can receive an “evaluation and some form of treatment without physician referral,” explains the APTA.

The month of October has been declared “National Physical Therapy Month.” One of our favorite themes for this month-long celebration was in 2007: Physical Therapy: The Science of Healing. The Art of Caring. This year, the emphasis is on Move Forward PT – and staying connected through Facebook and Twitter, and #ChoosePT with its emphasis on avoiding addictive opioids. What Is National Physical Therapy Month All About? For almost 40 years, physical therapy has been celebrated by official proclamation. And since 1992, October is the month for honoring physical therapists and the important role they play in healing people in pain. In the modern era of social media, hashtags like #UsePhysicalTherapy and #ChoosePT have helped spread the word. Physical Therapy Month allows patients to share their stories about how PT has changed their lives for the better. It also gives physical therapists a forum for spreading the word about the different kinds of treatment patients can receive. Many members of the general public don’t realize that aside from specialized exercises that build strength and flexibility, PT also offers pain management through massage, heat and cold applications, and specialized electronic-pulse devices. What Symptoms and Conditions Does PT Help? Physical therapy tends to be associated with sports injuries, along with chronic problems such as back pain, surgery recovery,andbalance issues.Yet,youmaynot realize the rangeofproblems whichphysical therapycanhelp --both forpainmanagementand tohelpeaseother symptoms. Do you have hand pain and stiffness? Physical therapists treat hand and wrist conditions ranging from carpal tunnel to “trigger finger.” Tennis elbow and rotator cuff injuries can also be aided through PT. So how can you tell if physical therapy is a better choice than prescription opioids? The CDC suggests that if you fall into any of these categories, physical therapy can be beneficial: • Pain comes from fibromyalgia, low back pain, kneearthritis or hip arthritis.These conditions in particular are known for responding well to physical therapy when it comes to pain management. • The pain has lasted more than 90 days, meaning that it has gone from “acute” to “chronic.” • The benefits of prescription opioids don’t outweigh their risks. In the early days after an injury or an operation, painkillers help patients function without crippling pain.Butwitheachday thatpasses, the risksopioidsposeoutweigh the rewards. • If you’ve become afraid of the pain. Obviously, nobody welcomes physical discomfort.Butsomepeoplebecomeoverlydependentonapill’sability to remove allachesand twinges. Inphysical therapy,pain isaway todetermineexactlywhat needs to be worked on, in order to reduce discomfort down the road. Does an official month really matter, given that physical therapists are out there making a difference every day? In many ways, yes!
