CELEBRATING OUR 15TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY WE’VE ACCOMPLISHED SO MUCH OVER THE YEARS

R

On Aug. 10, Jessica and I will celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. I remember our wedding like it was yesterday, and I’m grateful we got to celebrate with our closest friends and family. We didn’t have anything extravagant at our wedding ceremony because Jessica and I were still in college with very little money. But looking back, the money didn’t matter at all. The memories we created meant the most. Couples today, on average, spend a total of $26,000 on their ceremony, venue, catering, and attire. Jessica and I only spent about $3,000 for everything involved in our wedding. At the time, we wanted something extraordinary and at times felt a little disappointed we wouldn’t have the “dream” wedding. But looking back at our ceremony and everything we’ve accomplished since then — we wouldn’t change a thing. Jessica and I dated for one year before I proposed to her. The majority of our dating was long distance, but then she transferred to the college I was attending to see if we would seriously work out. The day I proposed was also the first time I told her I loved her. It was such a special moment. We got engaged during our spring break and wanted to get married before the fall term. That meant we only had four months to make the arrangements! We were married inside one of our religion’s beautiful temples, and that was free! But many of our friends and family couldn’t attend that ceremony, and we wanted to exchange rings in front of loved ones. We rented a venue for our reception and ring ceremony to surround ourselves with the people who mattered most to us. We found a florist that would rent out their store inexpensively for events, and it even came with a photographer

(not a great one, but it worked). The studio moved all the flowers to the walls, which we used as our decorations. Jessica’s young brother DJ’d, she and her mom made all the boutonnieres and bouquets except Jessica’s, and her family prepped food ahead of time to serve at the reception. While planning all the logistics was stressful, it ended up being perfect. I remember telling Jessica I never wanted our reception to end — we had so much fun! We had wanted something more expensive at that moment because we thought our wedding day would be the most important day of our lives. But now, looking at how much we accomplished over the past 15 years, the money we spent is irrelevant. While it’s still an important milestone, we’ve experienced other huge milestones like taking all of our kids home from the hospital after they were born, buying our first house (and others after that), traveling together, and starting our dental practice. Jessica and I will reach another milestone at the end of this month as we welcome our sixth child into the world! Now that I have a different perspective on the events of our lives, I realize that as meaningful and important as our wedding day was, we’ve been able to create many other equally fantastic days. Our wedding feels like one great memory among many. Now that I have a different perspective on the events of our lives, I realize that as meaningful and important as our wedding day was, we’ve been able to create many other equally fantastic days. Our wedding feels like one great memory among many.

Happy anniversary, Jessica. I can’t wait to see what our life looks like in another 15 years! I love you.

GET CRAFTY WITH MOTHER NATURE WITH HOMEMADE BIRD FEEDERS! Our feathered friends may need a hand when their food sources are scarce or when winter rolls around, which is where bird feeders come in! Making homemade bird feeders is a fun way for you and your family to be creative while learning about birds and other local fauna. You can create a bird feeder in many ways and encourage kids to get crafty! GATHER YOUR SUPPLIES. Most homemade bird feeders can be made with materials you can find in your own home! Recycled items such as toilet paper rolls, cereal boxes, egg cartons, milk jugs, paper plates and bowls, or even pine cones from the yard are perfect building blocks. Whatever you choose to build with, make sure the feeder is accessible to the birds! Cut holes so the birds can peck at the food and craft a place for them to perch on. If you’re hanging the feeder, cut holes for twine and ensure it won’t hang too low. For food, you can use regular bird seed from the store, or you can use items from your own fridge. (As part of the project, take a little time to look online for safe bird food suggestions if you don’t use seed.) You can adhere seeds and pieces of fruit and veggies to the side of the feeder with peanut butter — no glue required! JAZZ IT UP! This is where kids can personalize their own bird feeder. Using bird-safe paints (such as oil-based, latex, acrylic, or watercolor), your kids can design their own bird feeders with bright colors or designs that express their personalities or interests. Be sure not to paint the inside of the feeder, as birds may scratch and consume the paint while trying to reach the food.

When it comes to oral health, most people know brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing at least once a day are essential. But did you know you should also use mouthwash with your oral hygiene routine? Although brushing and flossing help kill the bacteria lingering on your teeth, brushing can’t get all the surfaces in your mouth. This is where mouthwash comes in handy. WHY IS MOUTHWASH IMPORTANT? Your oral health is about more than just your teeth. Of course, you want to kill all the bacteria, but a toothbrush can only do so much. You can’t brush/ floss all the areas of your tongue, gums, folds in your mouth, and cheeks. But mouthwash will kill the germs in these areas and freshen your breath, reduce plaque and gingivitis, and fight cavities and tooth decay. HOW DO YOU USE MOUTHWASH? Some dentists have different views on when you should use mouthwash in your oral routine. Dr. Brooks suggests this order: 1) floss, 2) mouthwash, and 3) brush. There’s more fluoride in toothpaste, and you want to leave as much fluoride in your mouth as possible to further protect your teeth. If you rinse with mouthwash after brushing, you won’t get all the benefits fluoride provides for your teeth. But if you decide to use mouthwash after brushing, wait at least 30 minutes. You can even use mouth rinse between meals to keep your breath fresh. Brushing your teeth after every meal is suggested, but mouthwash is a great substitute. In addition, using a mouth rinse every night before bed will neutralize bacteria. Swish the liquid in your mouth for at least 30 seconds before spitting it out. WHAT MOUTHWASH SHOULD YOU USE? As long as the mouth rinse has the American Dental Association accepted label on the bottle, it’s good to use. If you’re prone to tooth decay, suffering from oral diseases, or tooth pain, it’s recommended to use a dentist-prescribed mouthwash such as OraCare. You can still use this mouth rinse even if you don’t suffer from tooth decay, pain, or diseases. When you visit our office, we’ll make sure to recommend the best mouthwash for you. YES! HERE’S WHY Should You Use Mouthwash Daily?

Then all you have left is to find the perfect spot. Try to find a space where you can see the birds but with enough distance so you don’t scare them away. After that, hang it up and watch the flocks come to you! Homemade bird feeders can be a great way to get your kids involved with Mother Nature and teach them how to care for and observe wild animals, all while being good to the environment.

If you have any questions or concerns about how effective your mouthwash is, or if you’re interested in trying OraCare, just give us a call and we’ll help!

International Geocaching Day takes place on the third Saturday of the month of August. It’s a chance to experience an adventure-filled day that will get you out of the house and into nature. People of all ages gather to commemorate the placement and discovery of geocaches across the world, and there’s no telling what kind of surprise you might discover if you participate! WHAT IS GEOCACHING? Geocaching is basically a high-tech version of a treasure or scavenger hunt. It is inspired by the older treasure hunt called letterbox, where you plant clues in various locations that lead to the letterbox. For geocaching nowadays, you use a GPS to track down caches. These are typically waterproof containers — and inside there is a logbook for you to sign. These caches can be filled with trinkets such as coins, pins, or even miniature figurines, but if you take anything, be sure that you replace it with something else. It doesn’t have to be anything expensive, just a token of sorts for someone else to discover. IT’S TIME TO GET STARTED. To begin your geocaching journey, first visit Geocaching.com and sign up for a new account. From this, you will be able to create a unique geocacher name that people in the geocache community can call you by! This will also come in handy when you sign the logbook. GET OUTSIDE WITH GEOCACHING Tracking Down Treasures IN THE DISNEY MOVIE ‘THE LITTLE MERMAID,’ IS URSULA ARIEL’S AUNT? A deleted and extended scene at the beginning of the first movie starts with a song that explains Ursula is King Triton’s “witch of a sister.” This makes Ursula Ariel’s aunt as well as making her the first Disney villain who is related to the protagonist — predating Scar from “The Lion King.” WHO MADE THE FIRST PHONE CALL TO THE MOON? When Apollo 11 astronauts landed on the moon, President Richard Nixon called Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin from the Oval Office at the White House. The president stated that this is one of the most historic phone calls ever made from the White House. YOUR MONTHLY NEED-TO-KNOW Our office remodel is under way, and we’re very excited! It is messy though, so if you’re heading our way this month, know that there will be some extra noise and our lobby will be closed. Starting mid-September, our office will close for several weeks in order to complete the renovation as quickly as possible. We’ll still be available by phone and have capabilities to treat emergencies, so don’t think we’re just deserting you. Watch your email and text communication from us for more information as the renovation progresses. Our Renovations Have Begun!

You can also download the Geocaching app to your smartphone and use it as a GPS receiver. Once you open the map on your phone, it will show a map of your location with bubble icons to see all the geocaches near you. There will be an arrow icon that you can click on that will find the specific geocache you are searching for. It will then open a compass that shows you which direction to go in and how many feet you are away from the final location. This treasure hunt brings an entire community together from all around the world. It encourages people to challenge themselves and get outside. The act of hiding and finding a geocache is thrilling, and you never know what you might find next.
