WELCOME TO EDU by PURPOSE EDUCAt iON

Welcome to EDU- Education Demands Understanding. EDU is a publication created by Purpose Education dedicated to all things education. The goal of EDU is to bring news, ideas, and awareness in the area of education and politics, focusing on K-12 education. As a lifelong educator, it is a personal and professional belief that if more people understand the realities of education, and how public schools affect society, then more change can be made. Education is what has built this country and teachers are the forgotten foundation. My hope is with every issue you read something new that sparks an idea to use in supporting education. My only request is you share EDU and any knowledge gained with the next person in an effort to support educators everywhere. Education Demands Understanding. Enjoy!

FEATURE

The focus of this issue is two fold: the importance of the political and educational connection

and Black History/ Women's History.

Keeping Safe at school

A major debate in education right now is the return of in-person learning. Some schools have been in-person all year, while some on hybrid schedules, and others completely virtual. It is important to note not all schools are equipped financially, physically, and/or strategically to handle safety measures in protecting TEACHERS and students. The CDC is the guiding force behind reopening schools and the following are the CDC's recommendations for schools to implement.

CDC SCHOOL RECOMMENDATIONS Click each checkmark for more details

MASKS

KEY mitigation strategies are essential to safe delivery of in- person instruction and help mitigate COVID-19 transmission in schools.

HANDWASHING

Low transmission

CLEANING

PHYISCAL DISTANCING

CONTACT TRACING

Please understand If the focus of the debate could turn from in-person and/or remote learning to ensuring the SAFETY and PROTECTION of not only students but TEACHERS as well, more could be accomplished in getting all schools back to in-person learning. Teachers WANT to return to in- person learning...SAFELY!

Standardized testing has again reared its ugly head. There are not many areas that students, teachers, administrators, and parents find common ground but standardized testing is one of those areas. As teachers and students are still adjusting to in-person learning, as well as many still remote learning, states should have the option to waive testing this school year in the best interest of teachers and students. The Confusion of Standardized Testing

In January it seemed the Biden administration was encouraging the waiving of standardized testing but in February the tide changed.

Letter from Ian Rosenblum Click Above Picture

Although Miguel Cordona has now been confirmed as the Secretary of Education, a letter from Ian Rosenblum, Acting Assistant Secretary of the Department of Education, stated that standardized tests WILL occur and states can apply for a waiver on how and when tests will be given and how the results will be used.

Note to Parents...

For the sake of your student, it is important to pay attention as there are changes consistently occuring

Stay up to date with news coming from the Department of Education as well as State Boards of Education for your specific state Check to see if there is a testing opt-out choice in your state (many times there is but schools do not inform parents)

Stay up to date on the weight percentage of standardized tests results on students overall grades Remember that the decision to have to waive standardized tests is a federal and state lawmaker decision- not the local school boards or school administration

Education Public schools are one the most powerful entity that influences American society. The underlying issue of public education, simply put is the lack of emphasis on the political-educational connection. Politics and education are directly related to each however, most people do not understand the importance of this connection. Politics play the most integral role in the interworking of K-12 education. From standardized testing to teacher certifications, to the number of days in a school year, politicians make those decisions. Politics

What's in the HOUSE?

Currently, in the House of Representatives, there is a bill, H.R. 899, that has been introduced to dismantle the Federal Department of Education. The type of bill has been introduced multiple times in the past and failed multiple times. The Department of Education is invaluable to the functioning of American education and as a result the functioning of this country.

It's more than just politics

As political fatigue starts to set in for many people, nowmore than ever is the time to be paying attention to politics. In everyday conversations comments, such as "it's just politics" or "canwe talk about anything but politics" are often said, but the fact remains focusing on politics is amust. For many citizens of this country, the results of political legislation have been a lifeline of opportunity for people to achieve success. It is a scary thought to think of what American life would be if the attitude of "it's just politics" prevailed.

1946

In 1954 the Supreme Court ruled, it was unconstitutional for schools to remain segregated. In 1964 a decade after the ruling, 98%of schools in the South remained segregated. When Congress passed and President Lyndon Johnson signed, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, it gave the federal government the power to enforce school desegregation. The Justice Department could sue schools and/or withhold funding if integration was refused by the schools. In 1965 President Lyndon Johnson signed the ESEA. The new legislation represented a new commitment by the federal government to education. The aimwas to provide “quality and equality” in educating students. The ESEA provided additional resources to provide textbooks, library book, special education centers andmore to districts serving low-income students. ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION ACT (ESEA) TITLE IXwas signed into law by President Richard Nixon in 1972. The legislation prohibits sex discrimination in any education programor activity receiving federal financial assistance.
