Right now student behavior is front and center in education. From unruly students in the classroom to illegal activity on and off-campus, student behavior is an increasing problem across the nation. To understand student behavior, we have to understand parent behavior . In most cases, students are a reflection of those who raise them. When children see parents rebelling against rules and policies they do not agree with and ignore them, the child starts to mirror those same behaviors in school. It is imperative parents are intentional in their actions and know the results of their negative behavior may directly and/or indirectly impact their student's behavior. Adults have to realize, bad behavior never helps anyone especially their children. Parents are a child's first role model! Parent: anyone who is the legal guardian of a child- Students are not always raised by a biological parent.

Student Loan Update

Student loan repayment has been a debate for many years. In 2007 the Department of Education introduced The Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. This program was supposed to be the light at the end of the tunnel for loan borrowers but for many, the light was only a glimmer that borrowers saw diminish after being denied forgiveness.

Click for full article

In 2017, ten years after the inception of PSLF, it was time for loans to be forgiven. Many borrowers who made consecutive payments for the ten years were denied forgiveness for various reasons. About 98% of borrowers who paid their payments were denied forgiveness. Fast forward to October 2021, the Department of Education announced changes to the PSLF program. For a limited period of time, borrowers may receive credit for past periods of repayment that would otherwise not qualify for PSLF and the process has been simplified. The basics of the PSLF program is very simple: - Employment in public service (includes teaching) - Consolidate all loans into a Direct Consolidation Loan - Make 120 consecutive payments for 10 years, * After all requirements are met, the remaining amount owed on the the loan would be forgiven. ** For more specific information, please refer to the links below **

California Law-Female Products Politics are Everywhere....even in the restroom What's going on:

Official Bill ClickHere

The California Legislature has passed a new law that requires student bathroom in public high schools be equipped with female menstrual cycle products.

Why should I care?

To be able to learn effectively, students must feel their most comfortable. For females, this can prove difficult if they are not equipped with the products needed during their menstrual cycles. Sometimes the students do not have the finances to purchase the products and other times it is because of an unexpected emergency. Either way, it is important that students have access to these products so they can focus on learning! Thinking Outside of the Box... Snacks? No! BOOKS? Yes! Book Vending In the age of phones and ipads, parents and teachers are always looking for ways to get students reading. Machine Motivates Students to Read

Since most reading programs are online and media specialists are more than librarians, getting physical books in the hands of students can be difficult. Book vending machines are popping up in schools all over the country to try and bring access and excitement back to reading! Spread the word and check it out for schools in your area! We stopped fighting and people started going to class - Student at Southwood High School

The statement above is something all teachers would love to hear. When students can see their own improvements it motivates them to keep improving. Since the program has been implemented, the school went from multiple fights and student arrests to none at all according to the latest reports. The drastic results are credited to the Dad's on Duty program and how much impact the men have made in the school.

Petersburg School District creates alternative to out-of-school suspensions

to just being sent home. The goal is to ensure the "suspended" students get time to focus and recover from the actions that resulted in them being suspended. While in the program, students will have access to trained professionals to help them work through problems, as well as, still have the opportunity to learn at school. For more information click the picture of arrows.

Many times when students are suspended, they are sent home to no supervision during the day and some students view suspension as a holiday from school. The Petersburg School District has created the "3.0" program to try and combat the problems created from out-of-school suspension. The program calls to end out- of-school suspensions and give students an alternative .

Until Next time...

As we approach the holiday season it is important to be sure to be checking in with your student as well as spend time with them. Talk, listen and be sure to give them an opportunity to talk about things that are going on in their lives. Many students today are struggling emotionally and mentally and it is important to make sure lines of communication are always open. Teachers need to take this time to rejuvenate as well as focus on how to make it to the end of the year. Teachers need to be supported and appreciated now more than ever. It is inevitable that there will be challenges to face, and decisions made that are out of your control, but what you can control is how you react to it. In the end parents, teachers and students have one common goal..student success! It's like the old quote, "Attitude determines altitude!" Let's keep flying high!
