5.  HOSPITAL REQUIREMENTS

6.  WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ELIGIBILITY AND SELECTION

Certain hospital / core generalist training experience is considered mandatory preparation for the AGPT program and must be completed before commencing GP placements

Doctors applying for the AGPT program must have • Australian or New Zealand Citizenship or permanent residency • General Registration at the time they enter the program • Not be enrolled in another training program at the time they enter the AGPT program *EV does not accept applicants on any temporary visa subclass TSS. RACGP AND ACRRM UNDERTAKE ELIGIBILITY CHECKS FOR ALL CANDIDATES. RACGP and ACRRM have different selection processes, full details are outlined on their websites. Only eligible applicants move through to College AGPT Assessment. Applicants must pay an application fee to the relevant college. All enquires about eligibility and assessments should be directed to the GP Colleges

AGPT ELIGIBILITY

Undertaken in an accredited Australian and/or New Zealand hospital

A minimum 8 week term in an Emergency Department (ED).

Preferably a general medicine rotation or, if unavailable, a rotation that offers broad medical experience.

General surgery is preferred or, if unavailable, a surgical rotation that covers the principles of basic surgical care

A paediatric rotation must be undertaken in an accredited hospital and include child and adolescent health experience, with a high proportion of paediatric emergency attendances. It is acknowledged that securing a paediatric rotation can be difficult and not always possible. An alternative is to complete two ED rotations. ED rotations need to be undertaken in a department with a high percentage of paediatric presentations and the placement duration will depend on whether you are enrolled with RACGP and/or ACRRM. There may be other alternatives so it is recommended that you check whether your paediatric experience meets the requirements for training with the relevant college. Registrars must obtain hospital disciplines in a variety of other areas to demonstrate a breadth of experience. It is recommended that disciplines offer skills relevant to general practice. For example: obstetrics and gynaecology (O&G), psychiatry, aged care or rehabilitation. Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) registrars must undertake anaesthetics and O&G experience during their training but this does not need to be done before starting a general practice rotation.

8.  WHAT DOCUMENTS DO YOU NEED

9.  PROFESSION-LED TRAINING

The two GP Colleges, Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and Australian College of Rural & Remote Medicine (ACRRM) will be taking over the delivery of the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) program from 1 February, 2023.

WHEN YOU APPLY:

There are a number of documents required at the time of application and these relate to your medical qualification, proof of identity and citizenship.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR 2023 AGPT APPLICANTS?

WHEN YOU ARE ACCEPTED:

A pply to one or both of the Colleges and select a region to train in. Eligible applicants will move through the selection process (see Section 7 How to Apply) If selecting Eastern Victoria as your training region, interviews will be managed as follows: - RACGP – EV conducts interviews for RACGP - ACRRM – Interviews are conducted by ACRRM with EV representation

If successful in your application, you will need to provide documents to verify your hospital experience. This is particularly important for those doctors applying for Recognition

Training offers will be made to successful applicants by the relevant College and/or EV

of Prior Learning (RPL). This is done once doctors have been accepted into the program. A current CV is also required.

Successful applicants to Eastern Victoria will either commence in hospital or enter the EV practice match for a general practice placement

Tip Keep all relevant documentation during your hospital experience including assessments. It is much easier to collect this as you go, rather than request the information later on.

On commencement of the 2023 AGPT program on 6 February 2023 registrar training will be managed by the relevant College
