CLIPPINGS &

FROM HELEN DUVAL 2021

Rather like an ugly divorce, trade disputes continue to pile up, as the UK and EU continue to argue both politically and diplomatically. Perhaps that was an inevitability? The EU certainly won’t want the return to making our own rules either easy or successful quickly. The antagonism regarding Brexit combined with continuing issues regarding vaccines and the pandemic seem to always drive and divide opinion on both sides of The Channel. The tensions have risen over the last 3 months since the new trade agreement was officially formalised at the beginning of the year. The fact that the UK refused to grant full diplomatic status to the European Union’s envoy to London, led to the bloc’s hostility with European leaders almost tearing up the trade agreement regarding Northern Ireland. Currently, third wave of infections is battering Europe, with a repeat of the situation that first began with lockdowns 12 months ago. In Italy, the first country to introduce a national lockdown last year, new restrictions were recently imposed. Cases have skyrocketed again throughout Europe with hospitalisations soaring once again. There has been further chaos after Germany, France and Italy stopped the AstraZeneca rollout due to a small number of people suffering from blood clots. Despite public health agencies including the WHO stating that millions have received the vaccine without blood clots occurring, with no viable link appearing, the rollout continued to be suspended. Although the EU stated that stopping rollout was only a temporary measure, there are immunologists who are concerned about the effect this will have in the race against time with this disease. Other things have been having a powerful influence in the UK recently - that infamous relationship. No, not the Royal one playing out across ‘the Pond’ but the economic and political one between the UK and the US. Both countries played essential roles in how global trade developed after World War II. The ‘special relationship’ has been somewhat fraught in recent times, with reports of an all time low between the two countries. However, Britain is still and will continue to be entwined with Europe’s security and will remain important in the continuing steadiness of the Euro-bloc. A huge positive when looking at developing trade agreements with the US.

MUSINGS

The commitment by the US to multilateral international order as well as the strength of Europe’s community, particularly in respect of Russia, will remain important. Mutual security and stability will remain essential to those on both sides of The Channel with many shared interests as well as challenges such as climate change and China. MY POINT? The construction industry faced unprecedented challenges during 2020 with Brexit and Covid, leading to construction output falling by nearly 36%….but things are improving. Thankfully, sites that were closed in England and Wales reopened faster than predicted which gave our sector room to breathe again. Predictions forecast that construction will experience gradual but continual recovery over the next 2 years. Consumer confidence is increasing now we have the vaccine rollout programme working so quickly and so well. A rise in domestic and commercial building projects is expected from this with some sort of ‘normal’ now possible regarding productivity and installation. Things are looking up!

VIRTUAL SHOWROOM AND FENEX VIRTU PROVE GREA

As online marketing continues to gather momentum many are keen to highlight the products and services they offer. During the Covid pandemic, 50 virtual showrooms have now been funded and created by Morley Glass with the help of Videoproduction4, National Fenestration awards and FENEX, each worth over £1500, which reflect the high standards offered by the showroom winners. Morley Glass have now funded and given away 50 Virtual Showrooms to installers in a bid to help them grow their business during these very challenging times. Created as focal selling points for online visitors to websites to see the diversity of products available, it is now possible to experience the quality of standards out there.

With the limitations imposed on so many businesses by the Covid-19 pandemic, the virtual showrooms have really helped installers to continue operating, by increasing website visits and gaining appointments from consumers, who may not visit a real-life showroom. Companies including McDermott Windows, Heath Windows, Droylsden Glass and Sapphire Windows are just a few who are now driving traffic to their showrooms with this fantastic technology. Thanks to the kind generosity of Morley Glass & Glazing, the production of these was absolutely free to the showroom winners. The feedback has been phenomenal with one company gaining over 4000 visits in just the first month online alone. The dozens of lucky winners have been sick to heap praise on Ian Short and Morley Glass & Glazing for helping the installer side of the industry in some of it’s most challenging and dark times. Lee Clarke - MD of Fenex and National Fenestration Awards said “Having spoken with Ian at the start of the Covid-19 outbreak we discussed how difficult it was going to be for installation companies especially with the challenge of showrooms closing down. We discussed a few ideas and after we discussed the virtual showroom give-away he said he wanted to help in seconds! Having known Ian and his Morley Glass team for many years I already knew how charitable he was but this was something else, he offered these showrooms with no limitations and many of these winners are not his customers, Ian and Morley Glass have done something truly incredible for this industry when it would have been easy to concentrate on his own company in these tough times, I am genuinely gobsmacked at this act of kindness.” Since creating the virtual showrooms we have heard from some very happy installers, but don’t just take our word for it - here are the thoughts of some of those who won:

MS - MORLEY GLASS UAL SHOWROOMS AT SUCCESS

Emma at Blackburn based McDermott Windows commented: “Lockdown has meant we have had to look at things differently, and the virtual showroom has enabled us to showcase our products in a really detailed way. Also, we are able to demonstrate that we do have an authentic base which is reassuring for many people to see.

We have links to products to show the diversity of the range we offer and get very positive feedback from visitors to the virtual site about this. It helps us stand out from the crowd and we always promote it by tagging the link to any emails we send out. Website traffic has increased and with the links to download our product brochures, it helps people to evaluate their choices and the brands they prefer. We really do appreciate that this was given to us by Ian at Morley Glass - he is just a fantastic guy and so supportive of people in this industry. I can’t speak highly enough and we are very grateful to him. He sees work in this sector as collaborative and we will always support him because of his generosity.” MCDERMOTT WINDOWS SHOWROOM - www.mcdermottwindows.co.uk/showroom www.morleyglass.co.uk

VIRTUAL SHOWR

Miall at Heath Windows and Doors Ltd in Cardiff commented: During lockdown, the virtual showroom has been a Godsend. It really is brilliant. With people still wanting to visit the showroom to see products first hand, we have been able to point them in the direction of the website. For the business it has been a great marketing tool and we have received great feedback. We were thrilled to have won this, but even more so for what we have gained for our business.” HEATH WINDOWS SHOWROOM - www. heathwindowsltd.co.uk/virtual-shoSroom-tour-top.html

Family run Sapphire Windows in Camarthenshire consider the virtual showroom a great asset to their business. Shaun stated: “There have been various lockdowns in Wales and we have all had to adapt. Now we can point people to the virtual showroom, which has been a big feature to our business this last 12 months. Increasingly, people are turning to this virtual route when making investments and we don’t see that this will change now. We have had more online enquiries than ever and it would seem visitors really like this way of seeing our products. The virtual showrooms are really helping the industry and we are very happy with ours - it’s a great feature to our business” SAPPHIRE WINDOWS SHOWROOM www.sapphirewindows.info/virtual-showroom/

Kevin Thackery at Droyslden Glass in Manchester said: “What a brilliant tool this has been, particularly during current restricted climates - the virtual showroom has really supported our business. We do now always try to promote it and we gain such positive feedback from visitors to the site. This business has remained strong and we feel that the virtual site has greatly influenced that. In addition to the virtual

showroom, we added extra hotspots so that we could include our entire product range. These are definitely worth any investment made but we really do appreciate Ian’s support in getting this off the ground for us.” DROYLSDEN GLASS SHOWROOM - https://my.matterport.com/show/?m=LaXHZfmG9EG

Aire Valley Glass in Keighley have been using the virtual showroom for around 12 months. Lyndon feels it has been a good addition to the business particularly with restrictions from the pandemic. “The virtual showroom has been our showroom during the lockdowns. It has helped us to highlight our business with so many people going online currently. It has been a good substitute and I am sure it will be a great reference point and support tool in the future, particularly for those who can’t get down here during the times when we are shut.”

AIRE VALLEY GLASS SHOWROOM www.airevaleyglass.co.uk/virtual-showroom-tour/ Window Plus Home Improvements were also one of the winners of the virtual showroom competition run by FENEX and Morley Glass. Craig MacKenzie, owner of the Glasgow-based company comments:

“Video production 4 gave us a very professional and personal service to all of our requests. The finished product has exceeded all of our expectations and has helped in promoting our facility to those who cannot visit in person. The feedback from our potential retail customers and also the commercial clients we work with is very positive. Since Covid-19 has impacted so many business in the fenestration industry as well as other sectors, combined with ongoing regulations that have forced us to close our showroom, this virtual showroom has made all the difference to us and is second to none. It has allowed anyone who would usually ask to pop in to see our products in person, to be able to enjoy a walk through video representation of our showroom and also enjoy a behind the scenes factory tour .We feel this really helps put new and potential customers at ease when looking for a company to do business with and to trust. Video Production 4 is a very easy company to work with and we will have no hesitation in using their services to promote our future facilities in the very near future. Video Production 4 offer a fantastic, friendly service and we would recommend them to anyone thinking of having a virtual tour created.” WINDOW PLUS HOME IMPROVEMENTS SHOWROOM -https://my.matterport.com/ show/?m=hRK73FCJSvS&fbclid=IwAR2qeZvx- BCagwt1OYGDkeAm2VJsGlAdm-7CY8aBM0u_ VWyCF6hF7QrL5bcg

LINIAR INTRODUCES PAS24 SECURE MODLOK™ SLIDING PATIO DOORS Innovation can take many forms. For Liniar, this means launching new, cutting-edge products and continually improving its existing product range to be more efficient in terms of security, safety or energy efficiency. The latest new development has now been launched and relates to Liniar’s ModLok™ Patio Door system – providing fabricators with the ability to manufacture the system to the exacting standards of the PAS24 Security accreditation. This is excellent news for fabricators and installers supplying to the new build market, who need to install a product that achieves the required security accreditations but is also ergonomic, stylish and environmentally friendly. As part of achieving the PAS24 accreditation, the updated Liniar ModLok™ patio door is fully tested to BS 6375 (parts 1, 2 and 3) for weather performance. STRONG AND SECURE Liniar’s ModLok™ patio door system has always been highly secure, featuring four bi-directional lock clusters incorporating eight mushroom head locking points housed within its existing aluminium box section, which provides additional rigidity and strength. By adding a 3-star rated; anti-snap; cylinder, the new lock extensions, and the PAS24 kit to internally sliding doors, a Part Q Building Regulation product can be achieved. All these new parts are retro-fit, thus making for an easy fabrication process – no additional routing preps are required to achieve PAS24 and Part Q compliance. THE LINIAR DIFFERENCE The ModLok™ patio door from Liniar does more than look the part. It boasts a sturdy eight-wheel acetal roller for an effortless ‘light as air’ gliding motion. This revolutionary roller also allows for superb load- bearing capacity of up to 120kg per sash, giving peace of mind with the additional weight associated with IGUs for PAS24 whilst maintaining the options for maximum size doors where required. Built-in deceleration means homeowners won’t see any unsightly crash stops, and ergonomic handles are simple to operate. Designed with installers in mind, the Liniar ModLok™ patio door offers a low threshold option with no trench excavation required. Additionally, the outer frame can

be mechanically jointed for easier access to those installations in tighter spaces. For homeowners, the ModLok™ patio door is an ideal choice. Available in a wide range of colours and finishes, it offers ultra-personalisation and exceptional usability for a variety of property styles.
