It’s Time To Change...

‘To Do’s are a huge part of most of our days and ensuring things don’t keep getting pushed to the bottom of that list can be hard. Nowadays the world of ‘must have right now’ takes over and it can be easy to lose sight of the things that are most valuable to us. Yet good old hard work pays off, along with the idea that mental well-being is important and getting that balance right is now a priority for everyone from production floor to CEO offices. Making changes for the better does require attention and energy, so refreshing that ‘to do’ list is important. While the past cannot be changed, things do get better with time and patience they say. We have seen change in the making a lot this month. Despite a slightly difficult birth there have been some very positive results from the digital expo that was FENEX, new incentives, NFA nominations and voting now underway are all giving the industry a much needed boost. Carrying on with the theme of change, it is interesting to see a new Cabinet now in place after Boris Johnson walked into No.10 with a scythe. That was quite a shake-up to his front bench since he took office and how it will affect voters and our lives in general remains to be seen but it certainly caused waves as it was far more extensive than anyone could have predicted. Clearly Mr Johnson’s revamp across the seats at the top table of his government

benches demonstrates a major To Do list, with a focus it would seem on bringing in domestic changes before another general election. I doubt it came as any surprise that Andrew Neil left hist position as chairman and anchor of GB News after it launched three months ago. Will this news avenue be able to survive now? - again a focus on change will be inevitable.

FROM HELEN DUVAL 2021

Will Christmas Be Cancelled Again? Fuel companies in crisis and the threat of extortionate rising costs don’t bode well for a happy Christmas season this year. Whilst everyone was accepting, albeit glumly, of families having to be separated due to Covid, it doesn’t look hopeful this year for anything that much better. The threat of food shortages combined with worries on deliveries in just about every sector along with a lack of drivers, seems to infer that we should all get planning now. Covid-19 is still wreaking havoc although things do appear to be looking brighter thanks to the vaccine programme that has been rolled out. Although the story of the global pandemic is still a work-in-progress, its effect has caused us all to take stock and evaluate the important issues such as, sustainability, mental health, climate change and business adaptability. As people in communities we are extremely fragile and need to evaluate environmental goals at every level. These considerations and the resulting changes will have dramatic effects on business moving forward into next year. Booming demand for builders and installers continues to force prices up. This alongside the shortage on essential products across construction continue to make companies evaluate how to cope. The UK’s construction sector is wonderfully busy but it desperately needs answers to stay healthy and make changes for the better for everyone. The UK government has greatly supported the construction sector in theory, with the resounding cry of“build back better” to help drive business forward and create growth. These ambitions are wonderful news in a bid to build more homes that are safer and to develop new transport initiatives all of which will bode well for commercial and retail projects….if deliveries and shortages improve. This all sounds wonderful, but as commendable as it seems, the impact of Brexit together with fuel cost implications for business and homeowners will need to see changes for the better and quickly.

Please join Masterframe Windows in supporting a wonderful cause in memory of Lewis Walters who sadly lost his five year battle with cancer a year ago on the 18th of September 2020. Carol Slade, Managing Director of Masterframe says “As our very valued customers and indeed as our friends, we came to know Lewis through our relationship with the Walters family. Lewis was an amazingly spirited young man who quietly braved the many challenges that this awful disease threw at him. He somehow found a truly remarkable strength to cope with the tireless rounds of invasive surgery, chemotherapy and daily battle of living with cancer. A devoted Nottingham Forest supporter along with his Dad and Grandfather, he loved the game, and all the ups, and the downs of supporting a championship team, aiming for the top. He also loved playing golf with his Dad Rob, Brother Reece and his Uncle Alister. Rachel his mum said of him that he was brilliant company, a fantastic listener and a wonderful son. As you can imagine, Lewis was an irreplaceable part of his family’s life, and they will always treasure the 19 years they had with this most admirable individual. The courage he displayed during his short life certainly taught us all that whatever the daily challenges we may encounter, we need to face them head on with dignity and resilience. In a tribute to his son, Rob said, “We could all learn a lot from Lewis”. Carol continues “In Lewis’s memory we wanted to support a charity close to the family’s heart. Rob and Alister have been valued long standing members of the Bygone Network since 2002 and as a company we want to support them and the charity of their choice which is Lauren’s Legacy.” ABOUT LAUREN’S LEGACY: The charity supports teenagers and young adults going through their cancer treatments by granting wishes. This may involve a family holiday, concert tickets to see their favourite band, sports events or a simple IPad. All funds raised go directly towards the teenagers and their families. ALUMINA: NOT JUST A BI- FOLDING DOOR…

Launched in April 2016, the Alumina door range from Liniar took the industry by storm. A fully aluminium door created by an industry-leading PVCu systems company that not only matched the sculptured design of its windows, but also provided superb thermal efficiency, exceptional security, low U-values and the ability to be foiled for a warm-touch exterior. Liniar customers around the UK are fabricating the Alumina system, with the reassurance of delivery from a stable UK supply chain. Bi-folds, French and Residential doors Alumina is best known for bi-folding doors. Each sash can be manufactured up to 2.5 metres high for stunning expanses of glass spanning up to 7 panes in width. A choice of five thresholds including a Part M compliant low threshold with no trench excavation required makes the Alumina bi-fold ideal for family living. The sleek, flush design of Alumina lends itself perfectly to French doors too. Paired with timber-alternative, flush sash windows such as the Resurgence range, a foiled set of Alumina French doors provides the ideal complement for a fully flush installation. For an entrance door with a difference, Alumina can also be made into residential doors. A huge choice of foiled or RAL powder-coated finishes result in a versatile product that offers a real alternative to composite or PVCu residential doors. All Alumina doors offer superb thermal efficiency, with U-values as low as 1.3 W/m²K thanks to a polyamide thermal lock – and of course they’re tested to the highest security standards, with PAS24 and Secured By Design compatibility. The evolution of Alumina Since its initial launch, the Alumina range has benefited from constant enhancements and updates from Liniar’s Design and Development team. Alumina was the first aluminium door to include a flexible bead for glazing – meaning no more wedge gaskets (or sore thumbs for installers!) and up to three times faster fitting than other aluminium bi-folding doors. More recently, frame connectors enable Alumina bi-folds to span up to 8.5 metres wide – ideal both for commercial usage and for homeowners looking for more expansive openings to blend indoor and outdoor living areas. This year, a brand new 40mm add-on head vent was launched to provide properties featuring deep plaster lines a sleek appearance with concealed ventilation. The airflow in the optional built-in trickle vent has been fully tested and the component can be fully foiled to match the rest of the Alumina door for a seamless, perfect finish. What’s ahead? Development of the Alumina range is far from finished – a radical new addition is in the pipeline and will be announced in the near future. We can’t say too much yet, but watch out for a new design style that homeowners are going to love! Learn more about Liniar’s Alumina flush aluminium door range by visiting www.alumina.liniar.co.uk.

AWARDS SUPER SIX FOR MORLEY GLASS IN 2021 NFAS

Uni-Blinds® integral blinds manufacturer Morley Glass has been nominated for more National Fenestration Awards (NFAs) than ever after being shortlisted for six awards in the 2021 programme. The company, which is the UK’s largest manufacturer of Screenline® blinds integrated within double glazed units, hopes to build on its 2020 NFAs success when it picked up four awards, including in the Covid Heroes category, as well as receiving a special mention. Three of the 2021 nominations for Morley Glass are for awards that the company won last year: Best Use of Video, IGU Manufacturer and Integral Blinds Company. This time around, Morley Glass is also in the running for Digital Marketing Campaign of the Year, New Product and Recycling Company, reflecting the depth of its proactive approach to sales and marketing, R&D and sustainability. And in addition to being a finalist in these corporate awards, two members of the Morley Glass team have also received nominations for individual awards. Marketing assistant Charlotte Gilbert has been named a finalist in the Social Networker and Young Person categories, along with Bryony Shaw, sales advisor, also on the shortlist for the Young Person award. The NFAs are awarded based on the number of votes received. Anyone working in the UK door and window industry can vote online at www.fenestrationawards.co.uk/nfa21 until 4th November at 9pm.

The winners will be announced at a presentation event at Doncaster Racecourse two days later. Ian Short, MD of Morley Glass said: “We’re really excited to be nominated for so many awards and look forward to the 2021 NFAs presentation on November 6th. Congratulations to everyone who has been shortlisted and the very best of luck! “Being shortlisted matters hugely because it provides important external recognition that we are on track with our business. The whole Morley Glass team works hard every day to create the highest quality products backed with outstanding service, but the best way to gauge how well we are doing is through industry awards – that’s why the NFAs are key to the fenestration industry.” In the past 12 months, Morley Glass has experienced an upsurge in demand for its range of integral Venetian and pleated Uni-Blinds®, all of which are produced in its state-of-the-art factory near Leeds using the world-renowned Screenline® blinds systems from Italian manufacturer Pellini S.p.A. In tandem with increased production volumes for its established integral blinds range in 2021, Morley Glass has launched several new products and developed its glass recycling operation, which takes the post-consumer glass back from installers working on replacement projects to be recycled – raising funds for good causes in the process. Window and door fastener specialist Rapierstar has helped golfers who are set to compete in GM Fundraising’s upcoming GMF Cup to prepare for the challenge by hosting a practice day at the prestigious Astbury Golf Club in South Cheshire. Following the success of a previous similar event back in 2018, the Rapierstar team wanted to make a special contribution to GM Fundraising’s efforts during this Covid-affected year by arranging a day for GMF Cup competitors to finally get together and reach their A game in time for the big forthcoming event in Portugal. Competitors for the postponed 2020 GMF Cup bring together representatives from some of the UK door and window industry’s best known companies, including software companies, extruders, hardware and machinery suppliers, as well as many leading fabricators. All are participating in the Ryder Cup style challenge, which takes place at the world-class international Golf resort of Quinta do Lago in Portugal on 14th to the 16th of September, as part of GM Fundraising’s ongoing programme to raise funds for Hope House Children’s Hospices. The golfers gathered prior to their warm-up competition at Rapierstar’s new learning & development and conference centre, an extensive new building at its Star Business Park Head Office site near Macclesfield. This gave the players a sneak preview of this high specification new facility ahead of its formal opening in early 2022. GM Fundraising Chairman Gary Morton, said “On behalf of everyone who took part in the Astbury practice event, I’d like to share our great appreciation for everything that ‘Team Rapierstar’ did for us. I doubt you could have done any more to have made it better – including organising the weather! Rapierstar is a lovely business which fully reflects the individuals who have worked so hard to make the business the success it is today.“For anyone who hasn’t been lucky enough to visit Rapierstar to this point, they will certainly look at them in a different light after doing so; such is the scale and quality of their superb new conference facilities, Innovation Centre showroom, and extensive 100,000 square foot modern warehouse operation.” The practice day was an important part of the preparations ahead of what is set to be good natured, but fiercely competitive fundraising event according to David Furness, Managing Director of Rapierstar, who organised the practice day at his local golf club. David added: “GM Fundraising has done a tremendous job of raising money at a time when charities need our support more than ever, so we are delighted to support them by taking part in the GMF Cup. As with previous years, however, we will certainly all be giving the challenge our best shot, so getting together as we did at Astbury was the ideal preparation. Thank you to everyone who was able to participate.” RAPIERSTAR HOSTSWARM-UP FOR GM FUNDRAISING’S GMF CUPGOLF CHALLENGERS

The mission of Hope House Children’s Hospices is to ensure that no one should face the death of a child alone. It costs £6.5 million every year to run its services and 86% of this is spent on care. Over 95% of Hope House’s annual costs are met through charitable donations and GM Fundraising is its largest single donor. Since it was established in 1995, GM Fundraising has raised over £2 million for Hope House Children’s Hospices. GREEN ROOM FABRICATION SEES CONTINUED GROWTH WITH LEKA SYSTEMS

Trade fabricator Green Room Fabrication has reported strong business growth since manufacturing the Leka Systems range. Having previously bought-in Leka products, the shrewd Berkshire-based business decided to go into fabrication to manufacture the complete product range in 2020, and it hasn’t looked back. Ryan Harrison, Sales Account Manager at Green Room Fabrication, comments: “Having previously fitted the Leka product range, we knew the quality of the products first hand. It therefore made good business sense for us to start manufacturing the products ourselves to support our trade customers.” Green Room Fabrication manufactures the Leka Warm Roof, the Leka Orangery Roof and the Leka Xi garden buildings from its Berkshire headquarters. While sales for all three products are increasing, the trend is clear when it comes to the Leka Orangery Roof and the Leka Xi garden building. Ryan says: “We can

see the change in buying patterns reflected in our order book. Sales of the Leka Orangery Roof remain strong as consumers seek light-filled extensions for their homes. Similarly, the Leka Xi garden building growth reflects the fact they create perfect home working spaces and free-standing garden rooms which have grown in popularity.” Green Room Fabrication was set up by installers for installers. The Green Room team has nearly 30 years’ combined experience in building, property and glazing industries and their head fabricator Darren has a background in aviation engineering delivering the highest level of expertise. Having carefully assessed the market for conservatory roof replacement systems, they chose Leka Systems as their primary product partner. It means they now offer the best in warm roofs, modular extensions and standalone garden buildings for their growing trade customer base. Ryan says the versatility and intelligence of the Leka products set them apart. “Take the Leka Xi, for example,” he says. “Because it’s a hybrid solution between a standard glass conservatory and a full brick extension, it offers our customers great versatility. It can be used as a single storey extension or a garden room and is strong enough to take 3.2m bifold doors without the need for any steels. As such, it allows installers to deliver more for their customers in a much quicker timeframe.” The Leka range is clearly a powerful selling point for Green Room Fabrication, but the quality of the company’s service is also a key differentiator. The company includes on-site training for up to four people in an installers’ first order to give new customers the confidence to install the product range correctly and efficiently. Once completed, the installers also become an accredited Leka Systems installer and are able to offer the industry-leading warranties. Every Leka product is constructed in the Berkshire factory before being disassembled and delivered to the customer’s site. Ryan comments: “It’s a valuable check that means installers won’t get any nasty surprises when they’re constructing on site as the products have already been technically checked for accuracy.” Green Room Fabrication values the quality of the Leka Systems range. However, what’s also clear is that the company adds its own quality in its service and attention to detail. Overall, it shows exactly why Green Room Fabrication is seeing such success with Leka.

When it comes to coloured frames, knowing how to colour match these with roofline and composite doors can be a minefield. Spray-coated colour finishes and foils are two very different processes and come in two very different colour ranges. While Kolorseal can produce window frames, composite doors and roofline products in virtually any colour, when it comes to matching foils it is important to note the differences in colour code numbers. Foil finishes are a type of laminate which can replicate timber and they imitate the traditional grainy look of wooden windows. The different foil colours are heat bonded to the surface of uPVC and provide consumers with attractive coloured alternatives to white. When colour matching these with roofline products, such as soffits and guttering, it is important not to get confused between the different colour chart, as once coloured they can appear very different when placed alongside each other. This can also be a costly lesson to learn. Colour Coating At It’s Best Colour coating windows and doors is a completely different process in which Kolorseal excels. Using any colour chart, the team can colour-match uPVC, aluminium or glass products that have been chosen or specified. The company has developed a process which provides maximum adhesion to the surface of a window, door or composite, where the colour becomes a part of the product. While any colours can be matched the main thing to remember is that RAL colours and Foil colours are different. Debbie Hendry, Managing Director comments, “It is important for both fabricators and installers to understand that Foils are not RAL colours. Anthracite Grey 9016 for example, is very different in a Foil than in a RAL colour. There are many other colours where this would be the case. It is important to understand that if you want something to match a foil colour then you must use the foil code or name when ordering and not a near RAL colour.” Outsourcing the paint spraying process to Kolorseal saves so much time, with a simple and quick 5 day turnaround. Kolorseal is attending FENEX, so Debbie and the team will be available online during the exhibition if you want to discuss anything. KnowYour RALColours FromYour Foils, KolorsealAdvises

LASER UP ADDING V STANDARD

Thanks to laser technology, the glass industry can do something that would be almost inconceivable in any other sector. Laser finishing treatment enables manufacturers to enhance the value of largely standardised products and increase their functionality. With prices for traditional IG units and facade cladding coming under increasing pressure, using laser upgrades to create bird protection glass, RF-transparent glass and anti-bacterial glass gives manufacturers the chance to tap into new target markets and increase their profit margins. HEGLA boraident of Halle/Saale, Germany, is a company that specialises in these types of laser applications. The HEGLA Laserbird is a system that can manipulate the top layer of a pane of glass or use laser printing to alter its properties, thus providing the glass with an additional benefit for the customer. “The high degree of flexibility and precision that laser technology offers is what sets it apart from other processes. You can switch between different finishing treatments without wasting time retooling, and the system can be used to work on both individual panes and finished IG units,” explains Dr Thomas Rainer, Head of Development at HEGLA boraident. Bird protection and RF-transparent glass RF-transparent glass is created by removing a layer of the coating in a dodecagonal pattern with extremely thin lines.
