FINAT, Labelexpo Drive Label Agenda reported by Greg Kishbaugh

Jerry Shields, Flexo Leader, Passes Away The flexo industry lost a leader, ad- vocate and friend with the recent passing of Gerald Shields, 80, of Lake Forest, Illinois. Shields was the past

F INAT, the international label association, and Labelexpo Eu- rope founders Tarsus Ltd., are celebrating the 25th anniver- sary of their partnership this year at the Labelexpo show, taking place at the Brussels Expo, Brussels, Belgium, September 25-28. At the heart of their present co-operation is the establish- ment of the Labelexpo Advisory Board (‘LAB’), composed of representatives from Labelexpo organizers Tarsus, FINAT board

of Emma and Scott DeNoble. He is also survived by his brother, Forrest (Ruth), his brother-in-law John “Butch” Bosselli (Marsha), as well as loving nieces, nephews and cousins. Jerry was born and raised on the north side of Chicago, Illinois. He re- ceived his undergraduate degree from North Park College and MBA from Roo- sevelt University. Jerry was Chairman Emeritus of Graymills Corporation, a manufacturing company owned by he and Linda. He was a mentor to many. Jerry held board positions, including

members, and show exhibitors. In an industry that is continual- ly growing and changing, the LAB’s key mission has been, and continues to be, to expand the event’s profile to include all the ‘new technologies’ that now form part of the definition of a ‘label’.Their efforts, coupled with the first results of long-term investment by the event venue, will reportedly deliver im- provements in logistics, facility management, and visitor conve- nience for this year’s show, which features a total of 700-plus exhibitors from more than 40 countries around the world. The show itself is enhanced by an agenda of on-site work- shops, seminars, and the presentation dinner at which this year’s Global Label Industry Awards will be presented. FINAT will be welcoming members, as well as potential asso- ciation members, to its stand, 11A31, to preview the new base

Driven By Demand According to the report, one driver in the market is high demand from the packaging industry. The growth of the packaging industry contributes to the increased demand for flexible packaging. Due to the thriving consumer goods industry and technological advances in the packaging industry, the global packaging market is expected to reach $1.12 trillion by 2021 from $897 billion in 2016, growing at a CAGR of 4.56 percent. The growth of the global packaging industry had a significant impact on the development and expan- sion of the global packaging inks market; especially, the waterborne flexographic printing inks. The report states that one challenge in the market is volatility in raw material prices.

A special feature on FINAT’s stand will, once again, be the Recycling Desk, at which visitors can obtain information about the various recycling solutions for spent release liner, and where a special video will be launched to promote awareness among both users and manufacturers of labels concerning the necessi- ty, and benefits of, secondary uses for spent liners. Award Winners On display on the FINAT stand will be the winning entries in this year’s FINAT Label Competition. Not only are these labels the best in their class, but what is equally interesting are the stories behind their suc- cess. FINAT will present a series of video-recorded in- terviews with the winning companies in the main category groupings, to provide a source of inspira- tion for continuous improvement and innovation, which will be rewarded in future editions of the competition. FINAT will also be encouraging participation in Tar- sus’ growing Label Academy initiative, providing label and packaging industry technical training online in topic-specific modules, with the opportunity for stu- dents to acquire technical certification for each suc- cessfully completed module.

This includes a series of webinars; FINAT’s biennial Technical Seminar next March, updating members on the self-adhesive technology along the supply chain; its major annual opinion-leading event for senior managers, the European Label Forum in June; and, for young managers in the label industry’s many and varied disciplines, the Young Managers Club Congress, taking place later in 2018. Digital Studies Labelexpo Europe will also be the launch platform for FINAT’s Digital Label Study, which will offer a crit- ical analysis of the current digital label printing tech- nology landscape in Europe, as well as identifying trends and future projections relevant to digital label print across different regions and sectors. FINAT will also present an update on the important topic of attracting ‘young talent’ to the labels and pack- age printing industry. Absolute Upgrades Multiple Bobst Presses

Absolute have just completed the conversion to 2G Carbon Fibre chambers of two Bobst Bielefeld flexo presses for East Riding Sacks (ERS), a manufacturer of paper sacks in the UK. Functional, Industrial Printing To Surge To $114.8B By 2022 The Functional and Industrial Print market is cur- rently valued at $76.9 billion, up from $37.2 billion in 2012, but with further growth forecasted to $114.8 billion by 2022, according to a new report from Smithers Pira. “Suppliers have developed new equipment that widens the applications, with new inks, coatings and functional fluids providing new properties of flexibil- ity, adhesion and durability, together with novel capa- bilities in electronics and biomedical to provide specific actions,” said Sean Smyth, author of the re- port. “While analogue printing methods — gravure, flexo, litho, screen, pad printing and foiling — are widely used, there is very strong growth in digital methods, with new inkjet inks and fluids opening many new opportunities.” “These markets do not use paper or paperboard substrates,” he continued, “but rather plastic, film, glass, wood, metal, ceramics, textiles, laminates and composite materials are involved. In the case of 3D printing there are plastics and metals, with some composites.” Asia is the largest region, reflecting the concentra- tion of manufacturing there, with large printing com- panies supplying electronics and environment materials, films and interior décor materials; and it is home to many giant electronic companies using printing as part of the manufacture of membrane switches, tags, circuitry, displays and photovoltaics. There is also strong growth in North America and Western Europe for high-value items and as improve- ments to many manufacturing processes. New technologies are being developed in these re- gions, with inkjet textile bringing high-value, short- run textile printing closer to the end user; while 3D printing is enabling changes to some manufacturing while potentially changing business models and whole supply chains through distributed 3D print- ing on-demand. Printing may be used as part of a wider manufactur- ing process or, in the case of 3D additive printing, it can be the manufacturing.

The SCIENCE of flexo rollers and sleeves Skilled flexo printers know any variation in temperature, humidity, substrates and a host of other conditions will affect the quality of their work. Cleanliness of lines, accuracy of colors and softness of shades can make or break a job. But if you want to maximize profits, you need to optimize uptime, speed and quality. The anilox rollers and sleeves in your presses are only as good as the science behind them— the technology of precision . ARC rollers and sleeves are built to exacting OEM dimensions, with cell geometries engineered for efficient ink usage and precise volumes. Contact ARC today or visit our website to learn more about what the science of flexography from ARC International can do to enhance your graphics.
