drupa has launched of the touchpoint packaging initiative for drupa 2020, which will take place from June 16-26, 2020. The ambitions of drupa touchpoint packaging are to provide insights into packaging design and pro- duction based on consumer needs and use, display the latest solutions and applications, and show how future packaging and design will deliver additional value, stimuli and growth opportunities. Bobst has signed on to be an active contributor to the project. The company believes that the role of packaging is evolving, and the way brands design, pack and distribute products is changing. Showcasing the trends of packaging will help con- verters visualize the directions packaging production are taking. Bobst serves the labels, flexible packaging, folding carton and corrugated boards markets, and the company will provide samples from ideation to finish, working in close cooperation with packaging design- ers and students to implement these innovations. In other news, European packaging solutions com- pany CPC has invested in four machines from Bobst. CPC Packaging was founded in 1986 and has 650 employees across nine factories in France and Ger- many. With sales of 140 million Euros across Europe, CPC has provided a one-stop-shop offer of cartons, flexibles and labels for many years. AWA Unveils Latest Market Study AWA Alexander Watson Associates has published a new in-depth study of the sleeve labeling market. The research report, AWA Global Sleeve Label Market Study 2018 , is an update on the current status in this market, and it confirms that sleeve labeling technolo- gy has established itself in a relatively shor t timescale. Today, sleeve labeling claims around 18 percent of the overall global label market. It is a ma- turing technology but growth is still strong at an an- nual 5.5 percent rate. As the study documents, most of the volumes are in heat shrink sleeves, represent- ing around 88 percent of usage, and with the Asian region claiming the highest volumes. Across all the sleeve label formats — heat shrink, stretch sleeve, ROSO MD sleeve, and RFS MD sleeve — the major end use market sector is beverages at 66 percent of volumes, with food-related applications today in second place at 19 percent. AWA is also hosting an Introduction to Heat Shrink Labeling Technologies Workshop in Minneapolis, Min- nesota, on November 13-14.

Records — Tom loved Bruce Springsteen — in New York City before going to work for NV Publications and his father, corrugated industry legend Ted Vilardi. Jim Curley, the first Editor-in Chief of Board Con- verting News and long-time family friend, remem- bered that he and Tom started at NV Publications at about the same time. “The company was little more than a year old — a four-person operation in two locations,” recalled Cur- ley. “Ted probably felt that the start-up could exhale at least a bit, so he added a salesman and a writer to their fledgling staff. Tom and I began with Recycling Markets, NV’s first acquisition. It was a good fit with Board Converting News in that both publications dealt with paper and it wasn’t a hard industry to learn. So, Tom and I would attend paper recycling dinners on the lower East Side of New York City and in New Jersey and eat some superb Italian food. “In the late 1980s, Tom married Jeneane Crawford and moved down to the Jersey Shore. I remember vis- iting his family and barely getting into his house when Tom said ‘here’ and quickly placed the infant T.J. in my arms. Some introduction! “Tom was, above all, a family man. He didn’t brag about his kids, but he was so proud of T.J. and Tyler and it showed. I remember the time he showed me an essay by one of them, who had written about how fortunate they had been to be born into Jeneane and Tom’s family. And, though he died much too early, Tom did enjoy the blessings of being a grandparent. “He was similarly caring towards his parents when they encountered the restricted world of old age. It’s not easy to assume the role of caregiver to your par- ents, but Tom and Jeneane did it. How he and I cried when Ted passed away! “In 1990, our New Jersey office moved down the shore. The company grew and its network of alliances, particularly that with the Brunton family, made NV a global publisher. But the last decade of the 20th centu- ry and the first of the new one were also times of in- tense consolidation of converters and their suppliers. Tom played a major role in keeping customers, adver- tisers and readers alike, signed up and happy and NV growing. That was a major achievement. “Talk about ‘relationship selling,’ a phrase that be- came popular several years ago. Both Tom and Ted practiced it throughout their entire careers. They sold to friends and had the interest of the industry they served front and center. Both were superb matchmakers, teaming up skilled workers looking for new opportunities with good employers eager for talent to help their companies grow.

“It was a pleasure to work at NV Publications and I will remember Tom fondly,” said Curley.

Family, Family, Family Michael Brunton, CEO of Brunton Business Publica- tions Ltd, recalled, “It was more than 35 years ago that I first met the Vilardi family. Our two family pub- lishing businesses had agreed to represent each other in Europe and the U.S. In those early days I spent much time with the family and when young Tom joined his father in business, I couldn’t be more excited. Initially selling advertising for Board Convert- ing News and International Paper Board Industry, Tom’s youthful enthusiasm quickly endeared him to suppliers and box makers alike. “I have so many happy memories as we travelled and exhibited together at TAPPI, AICC and FEFCO Conventions, drupa and corrugated exhibitions in Eu- rope. Never one to miss a ‘Convention Party’ and al- ways so supportive of his adoring family, Tom’s total commitment to NV Publications saw him take over the business as Ted moved into semi-retirement. “While NV Publications continued to expand under Tom’s guiding hand, my own son Dan had joined the Brunton Group and together they were a formidable
