I Didn’t Bawl at My Daughter’s Wedding

THANKS TO THIS TRICK

When I walked my younger daughter, Malory, down the aisle at her wedding last July, I bawled like a baby the whole way. I couldn’t help it! I was so proud of her, and I couldn’t believe how grown up she looked standing in front of West Lake Okoboji in her pretty white dress. At the time, I was sure I’d do the same thing when my older daughter, Madisen, got married. I love both of my girls so much. But amazingly, I managed to avoid the tears for one reason: Madisen gave me a job to do.

The course was very easy and very short. I didn’t need to know anything fancy. The state just wanted to make sure I’m a responsible person and I know how serious marriage is. I finished the whole thing up in about half an hour. Just like that, I had a certificate! Now, I’m a bonafide officiant. (Side note: This doesn’t mean I’m a pastor with a congregation and all that hoopla. I’m just qualified to officiate weddings and turn that into a side hustle if I want.) On Madisen’s big day, knowing I had to officiate was the only thing that helped me keep it together. I got really emotional walking her down the aisle in front of our little group of family. My heart was full of about 95% joy, happiness, and pride and 5% nerves for what came next. I was starting to tear up, but when we got to the end of the aisle, I took a deep breath and set all of my emotion aside. I wanted to do a good job as an officiant and marry Madisen and Brandon like a pro. I couldn’t break down while I asked them to say their vows! So, I handed Madisen over, turned around to face the two of them and the guests, got focused, and made it through the whole ceremony without a hiccup. I have to say, I was pretty dang proud of myself. The rest of the wedding was beautiful. The photographer took a bunch of pictures of our family and the happy couple against the rustic stone background at the venue. Then we all took off a block down the street for a nice dinner. After the fiasco at Mal’s wedding reception (a caterer had a seizure, but that’s a story for another day — thankfully, he was okay), I was glad the night was uneventful! If one of your kids has a wedding coming up and you want to be a tough guy/ gal through the whole thing, try this trick. Offer to officiate the wedding. It’s the best way to avoid bawling like a baby. –Darin Garman

Madisen and her husband, Brandon, got married this March at the Park Place Banquet Hall in Marion. It’s a nice rustic place with hardwood floors, stone walls, and old pictures of what the building looked like in the late 1800s all

around. Because the ceremony wasn’t in a church, one of the last details the happy couple had to work out was who would officiate the wedding. Madisen and Gina talked on and on about their plans. Then, one day Madisen came by our place with a question. “Hey, Dad,” she said, “will you officiate my wedding?” She’d looked into the requirements, and it turns out in the state of Iowa, all you have to do is pass an online course.

“Heck yes,” I told her, “you bet I will!”

4 COMMON FINANCIAL SCAMS TO AVOID Something’s Phishy

From dating swindles to Bitcoin and cryptocurrency hoaxes, it’s hard to tell the difference between honest offers and scams. Even worse, scams are becoming more creative every day. Here’s a list of some of the most common financial scams to be aware of. CRYPTOCURRENCY SCAMS Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have taken the world by storm. Because many don’t understand how they operate, it’s easy for cybercriminals to pull a fast one — or attempt to, anyway. To trick unsuspecting victims, scammers set up fake websites that mimic legitimate cryptocurrency platforms. These sites then either urge you to make investments or they will steal your information outright. FRAUDULENT RETAILERS On social media websites, you may have noticed suspicious online stores featuring deals that are too good to be true. At checkout, instead of being directed to a trusted third-party payment process, these merchants may ask for wire transfers or gift cards. Some of these online stores might not even provide contact information! FAKE DEBT COLLECTORS Criminals will claim to be government representatives and urge you to settle a debt putting you at risk of being arrested, losing your home, or

forfeiting your Social Security benefits. These scammers will ask you to pay the fake balance upfront to avoid any serious repercussions. Remember, government entities do not cold call, so you know to hang up or hit “delete.”

WORK-FROM-HOME SCAMS As working from home has recently become the norm for many, this hoax has become even easier for criminals to pull off. Cybercriminals will contact you, stating you can make hundreds of dollars a week doing nothing more than shopping online as a mystery shopper or another enticing task. They will then tell you that to get started, you’ll need to pay upfront for training materials — but once you do, you’ll never hear from them again. As a general rule of thumb, stay clear of any offers that seem too good to be true. Likewise, avoid transactions that don’t use a trusted third-party merchant, and always do your research! If something seems off, trust your instincts! In today’s world, you never know what hoaxes exist!

DON’T FALL INTO THE PIGGY BANK TRAP! My Grandfather’s Big Investment Mistake

When I was growing up, there was a lot of discussion in the house about money. Usually, it was about how much we did NOT have! I lived with my mom, grandparents, and uncle in a two-bedroom house … which didn’t qualify me for the lifestyle of the rich and famous.

hardly had anything to show for it. It’s a shame because he deserved a lot better, and I’m sure he thought he was investing the right way.

Many investors fall into the same piggy bank trap. They feel that if they JUST put some money away each month and keep doing it for 20–30 years, they’ll end up with a huge pile of cash. But it’s a big lie. I know many people who invested like this with discipline only to find out that because of the violent turns in the financial markets, they had a fraction of what they deserved. Worse, they couldn’t get back the time they lost. Now, I am NOT against monthly investing, but I know it’s not the most efficient path to financial freedom. That would be like using a horse and buggy when you have a car at your disposal. The sooner you find those “car” investments, the sooner you can start living the life you want. Take the bull by the horns before more time slips by you. Call or text me at 319-350-5378 and tell me you want to quit piggy bank investing. I’ll get you on the course to the best financial rewards. –Darin

One of my strongest memories is of the big, fat piggy bank that sat in my grandfather’s bedroom. Actually, it wasn’t shaped like a pig but like a football. I guess I could call it a “football bank.”

My grandfather dutifully put money in this bank and filled it up on many, many occasions. When the bank was full, he pulled out the “alternate piggy bank.” What was it? Well, an empty Folgers coffee can, of course! He deposited those cans in his savings account for years. I figured he had a nice sum stashed away. But when he died, I was shocked!

It ended up being such a small amount — only around $9,000. After years of discipline, he

Nestled near the Iowa town of Urbandale is a little piece of the 1800s: Living History Farms, an interactive outdoor history museum! When you visit Living History Farms, it truly feels like stepping back in time. You can eat a family- style dinner, watch an old-fashioned baseball game (played with rules from 1876), and even attend a pioneer wedding. The wedding is one of our favorite events at 1850 Farm, one of several working farm sites and building replicas throughout the museum. Because Darin just shared details of his daughters’ modern Iowa weddings, we thought it would be fun to explore these old-school traditions.

Here are just a few surprising facts about 1800s-era pioneer weddings:

• THE BRIDE DIDN’T USUALLY WEAR A WHITE DRESS. In one photoshoot from Living History Farms, you can see a bride dressed in blue with a sun bonnet and bouquet of wildflowers. • MOST WEDDINGS WEREN’T HELD IN CHURCHES. Instead, couples celebrate their union outdoors or in the bride’s home. According to Living History Farms, “Weddings could be performed either by a minister or a justice of the peace, and the date of the wedding was often determined by their availability.” • DINNER WAS … UNUSUAL. In addition to typical dishes like beef, pork, and chicken, you could find venison and roast bear on the menu. The meal was typically served in wooden bowls and eaten with pewter and horn silverware. • THE COUPLE DIDN’T GET A PEACEFUL WEDDING NIGHT. In the 1800s, “shivaree” tradition demanded guests show up to the house at dusk and bother the couple with loud music until the groom agreed to either be carried around on a fence rail or push his wife through the farm in a wheelbarrow. Afterward, the couple had to offer the whole group snacks. Living History Farms usually holds at least one Pioneer Wedding each summer. Every wedding includes a ceremony and hearth cooking demonstration. According to the Living History Farms website, when you attend a wedding, you’ll “discover the most popular gifts for a pioneer bride, and help the couple decide what to pack in their wagon for travel to their new home.”
