TUNE UP ON YOUR PROSTHETIC If you have recently received a prosthetic or have been using one for many years, there are several reasons you may need to have some adjustments made. Keeping your device tuned up is necessary to maintain maximum comfort and mobility. There are 5 reasons your prosthetic may need a tune up. 1. If Your Prosthetic is Relatively New If you received your prosthetic device within the last few months you’ll most likely need to have it readjusted. Making sure it fits and functions as effectively as possible will likely mean having it adjusted several times after you are initially fitted. It will take a few months to get accustomed to the prosthetic and know if you have a good fit or not. 2. If You’ve Lost or Gained Weight If you’ve lost or gained even a few pounds it may change the way your prosthetic fits. You’ll definitely need to come in for a tune up to make sure it is not too loose or too tight. A change in weight could happen at different times throughout your life. This could likely happen if you hadn’t completely finished growing when the prosthetic was initially fitted. (continued inside)

3. If You’re Experiencing Poor Balance If you’re finding it difficult to find your balance or are suffering from other types of instability, you will need to go in for an adjustment. This could be due to a change in weight or muscle density. The part of the prothesis that is attached to the limb can be damaged or worn out over time. This in turn can cause issues with balance and stability. Whatever the underlying cause, poor balance is a sign that your prosthetic needs a tune up. 4. If You’re Experiencing Pain or Skin Irritation Any pain or irritation associated with your prosthetic should immediately be addressed by a professional. Itching and chafing are common skin irritations that can normally be corrected with a tune up. You may need different spacer socks or an adjustment to the socket to eliminate the irritation. Pain could indicate a need for an adjustment or possibly a new device. 5. If You’re Becoming Tired More Easily This could be a clear sign that your prosthetic is not working as effectively as it should. This could happen if you’re involved in a new activity that you weren’t doing when your prosthetic was first fitted. How active you are and specific movements you make can affect the fit and feel of your prosthetic. If you’re experiencing any of the previous signs it’s important to have your prosthetic examined by a trained professional. Once you get your prosthetic tuned up it will dramatically affect your ability to move and function as efficiently as possible. TUNE UP ON YOUR PROSTHETIC
