PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE It is an honor to serve as President of the Board for our wonderful Club and I look forward to working with the Executive Committee and Board to assure that our Club continues to prosper and grow. I would like to start this message with a tremendous thank you to our outgoing President, Joseph Hacker, M.D. Joe has served us for the past three years with an unwavering commitment to improving service and meeting the ever changing needs of our members. When he began his term, we had just opened the enlarged and renovated Clubhouse. Now, three years later, look how we all use and enjoy our facilities.Who would have thought we would be expanding The Pub! Thank you Joe. 2018 will be an exciting year. Not only will we be completing The Pub Project, but in the near future your Board will be considering a proposal to expand and modernize the indoor tennis facility. The key to the feasibility of projects like these is a strong, active membership. Our highest priority needs to be membership development and retention. All members share equally in that responsibility. I hope you had a wonderful holiday season and wish you a very happy and healthy NewYear. Gary Ferguson President

A MESSAGE FROM MEMBERSHIP Happy NewYear! Winter 2018 is a good time to propose a new member! Spring season is only weeks away! Did you know: 1. A NOTE FROM PHIL Winter Greetings! Let me begin the NewYear by providing a brief recap of the one just past and offering a glimpse at what lies ahead. From a Club leadership perspective, 2017 was a year of planning and adjustments - both of an operational and strategic nature. Early in the year, the Board recognized a shift in the demographic needs of our younger legacy members and amended the By-Laws to better fit their profile. This adjustment

only be maintained by a membership willing and able to use and support the Club’s facilities. In turn, we, as your staff, are committed to providing you the best possible experience each time you are here. So, the recipe for 2018 is as simple as “use and enjoy”. Now that we are in January, the Club’s operating schedule shifts into a “winter mode”. Each department has listed the various hours of operation that will be observed. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the schedules so that you are not inconvenienced. Just as last year, we will employ a realistic winter operating schedule that attempts to match our hours of operation with your use. Athletic facilities will remain available seven days a week, with full class offerings in Fitness. Golf services will remain closed on Mondays; bag storage and carts will open on Tuesdays with full operations offered Wednesday through Sunday. Clubhouse Food and Beverage outlets will remain closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Wednesday through Sunday, regular food service will be offered but there will be an adjusted schedule for lunch. OnWednesday,Thursday and Friday, lunch will only be served in theTavern/Grille.The Hut will open daily at 3:00 pm and Café 1901 at 4:00 pm. Saturday and Sunday will be regular hours. Confused? Give us a call and we’ll help. This month,The Pub closes for about three months to get re- worked. During this period,The Hut will enjoy a return to action. With the relocated firepit and the opportunity to have menu items delivered from Café 1901 we will do our best to minimize the inconvenience of having your favorite watering hole closed. Victor is counting on you to stop by. There is another winter topic to deal with as well. We have already had enough snow at just the wrong times to be a nuisance and our weather guru says there will be more. When that happens, we are fortunate to have an excellent Grounds crew who have the responsibility of snow/ice removal. Regardless of how vigilant their efforts, the risk of an icy spot always exist. I urge you to always use caution when walking to and from the Clubhouse. My final item for the month is to once again thank those members who so generously contributed to the Employee Christmas Gift Fund.Your appreciation of the year-long efforts of our staff is greatly appreciated. The Christmas Gift is received by each member of staff and helps to create the positive working environment that is required to maintain a dedicated, loyal staff in an always difficult labor market. That’s all for now. As always, thanks for reading. Let’s have a safe, healthy winter and I’ll see you at the Club! Phil Iannelli General Manager

not only delays their stock purchase and increases their future stock purchase discount, but creates a new interim member classification to ease the transition from junior dues rates to that of a full Senior member. There has also been advancement on the planning of the Club’s future capital investment. Three significant projects have risen to priority; The Pub Renovation, the potential expansion of the Indoor Tennis Facility and the renovation of the main Clubhouse Kitchen. The Pub Project was approved in September and is now underway (more on that later). The other two projects remain in planning mode, but are nearing the point of presentation to the full Board for consideration. From a member perspective, your use and support of your Club remained very strong. Your Club has displayed a willingness to address the different demands of a changing membership demographic and you have responded. It is evident that as a membership, you desire a more casual, healthy, family environment than ever before. While we are constantly focused on providing those programs and services that satisfy that need, it is important to remember that your Club is also a business. I’m happy to report that as a business, your Club remains on a very stable footing. Once again, we were able to achieve or exceed all of the most important financial objectives for 2018.We not only funded almost $1.5 million in capital improvements, we successfully began building reserves for the future. Now it’s time to pull out the crystal ball and gaze into 2018. To achieve the same successes we enjoyed in 2017, two simple but very important things have to happen. Every member can help. First, continue to search for the “next good member”.This statement doesn’t mean to suggest that the Club’s membership levels are in trouble. Far from it. In fact, in 2017 we realized one of the lowest turnover rates of membership in a decade. Still, there will always be a natural attrition of members that must be overcome. Your role in identifying individuals who you’ll enjoy having a drink with at the bar is fundamental in the continued success of your Club. Second . . . use your Club. Eat, Play, Entertain - the more, the better. The continued strength of your Club can

This month’s wines hail from the Terra Alta region of Spain. Keith VanYahres Assistant General Manager

Herencia Altes Garnatxa Blanca 2015 Glass $7.50/ Bottle $27.50

Very aromatic with notes of melon and white fruits on the nose. On the palate it is balanced displaying medium body and a nice crisp freshness. Pairs well with simple tapas and grilled squid. Herencia Altes looks for a range of Garnatxa vines, some very old, others younger, to achieve complexity and balance. Of key importance is picking the grapes before the natural acidity is lost (the white wines have no acidity added!). A short maceration on the skins is followed by pressing and fermentation. The wines spend two months on fine lees to gain texture and complexity. 92 Points Gilbert & Gaillard (Fr) Robert Parker 88 Points

Herencia Altes Garnztxa Negra 2015 Glass $7.50 / Bottle $28.00

The Garnacha Nehra is bright crimson in color and is very expressive with notes of red fruits and minerals that leap from the glass. Plenty of fruit on the palate, a touch of complexity and sweet tannins. Pairs well with grilled meats and lamb. The winemakers look for a range of Garnatxa vines, making certain to pick grapes with a good level of ripeness while avoiding excessive alcohol.

'Santa Claus is Coming to Town' Holiday Brunch

Our reimagined combined kids party with Santa and Holiday Brunch was a success! We enjoyed photos with Santa, arts & crafts, and a delicious holiday brunch.

We celerbated our 20th Anniversary of the Candlelight Dinners this December! We enjoyed an intimate candlelit evening with an exquisite menu. Thank you for making this event so special over the years.

BOOK CLUB The devastating Maine fires of 1947 which wiped out 9 towns, left 2,500 homeless and killed 16 people is the backdrop for our Tuesday, January 2nd selection, Anita Shreve’s gripping novel The Stars Are Fire .Twenty-four year old Grace is the mother of two toddlers and pregnant with another child. Her marriage to Gene, a highway surveyor, is dutiful but loveless. A summer-long drought has left her coastal town at Hunts Beach a tinderbox and now in October fires are reported in several Maine towns. Gene goes off to join others creating a breakfront to fight the blaze, which leaves Grace and the children to flee their home when the fire advances. Grace saves them by burrowing in the surf and sand as flames lick the beaches. After a terrifying night on the beach watching her house burn to the ground, she and the children are rescued. Homeless, penniless and weak, she is unable to find her husband who has never come back and she is faced with an uncertain future in a town that no longer exists. Grace is in a constant state of alert and Shreve keeps a low level of dread running through her pages to increase the tension. Grace is tested again and again and emerges stronger by surviving the ravages of life and even finding beauty at times. Join us on the 2nd at 4:00 pm in the Ladies’ Lounge as Christine Barker leads the discussion of this riveting, historical novel. Our February novel, The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane by Lisa See is a stirring coming of age novel of a young Chinese woman who has had to give her baby daughter away because of the rigid customs and traditions of her family’s ethic minority tribe, the Akha. She deals with her sorrow at losing her daughter by finding purpose, passion and the key to a new life by getting involved again in the tea growing traditions of her ancestors. This is a beautiful story of the growing of tea in China and the strong bonds between mothers and daughters especially when a child is given up for adoption.

OUR FIRST ANNUAL WCC CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT

On behalf of our WCC Team we want to thank you and Kim & Anthony for being our CBC-Mentors for our 1st Annual WCC-CBC. It was great fun and we couldn't have had a more perfect day for our first ever WCC-CBC. I remained at the Club for an early lunch and when I came out at 12:30 pm there were flocks of birds all over our grounds. Many more than we saw from 10:00 am - 11:15 am, go figure. Also a special thanks and shout-out to Zack in the Golf Shop for getting our carts, as well as Dan Pierson for having the paths & service roads cleared for our ease of access. We really appreciate your help & support! As for the rest of our WCC Bird Team it was a very special event and I strongly recommend signing up for the 2018 WCC-CBC. Happy NewYear! Best regards, Leigh Johnstone

A NOTE FROM GROUNDS

ANATOMY OF A BUNKER REHABILITATION During the off-season each year, beginning as soon as the official calendar of golf events is completed, our seasoned and very talented bunker crews initiate the work of bunker restoration. This program is somewhat tedious in nature and requires experience, dexterity, and a very keen eye to do well. Our bunker teams, captained on the South Course by Hipolito “Poli” Aguilar, and on the North Course by Juan Mendez, possess tremendous talent.

The reason this activity is ongoing every year is due to the very nature of almost any bunker design that results in a consistent rate of decline occurring around the edge. This includes the particular challenges of growing grass on vertical profiles and in close proximity to dry sand, the daily maintenance requirements that add traffic wear in the same edge areas, uneven contours that make nutrient and moisture management inconsistent, and pest management programs for insects and disease control problematic. Daily play from the sand

surfaces also deposits small amounts of sand on the slopes, changing the contours over time. As result, bunker edges break down and as they are re-edged to remove dead grass, the shape and integrity of design are compromised. Repair can only be done by hand and is very time consuming. When renovation work is done in house, in a good year we may average three to five holes per course completed. Our priorities are based on individual bunker condition and appearance. The process of renovation begins by pulling all the sand down from the edge of the grass to the center of the bunker. Next we strip away the old grass in affected areas around a given bunker to expose the soil underneath. In many cases, shovel excavation of the soil is required to locate the original edge of the bunker. This process is typically a bit more straightforward on the South Course as protective liners were installed under the sand during the original construction. The North Course is more open to interpretation due to the lack of lining material, though we have been installing lining on the bunker faces of the North Course as we rebuild them. In either case, the next step involving reconstruction of the exposed edge is the same. Thin, flexible boards are put into place to build a wall and secured with stakes so as they do not move. Soil is then compacted on the exterior side of the boards and shaped to tie into the neighboring grades of the green surround. Once this soil is firmly tamped, the boards are removed exposing the new bunker edge. The soil will then be “prepared” with a light raking and covered over in sod. Large staples are used to pin the sod to the surface so that it does not move until the roots have time to grow and hold the new grass in place. Finally, the sand is pushed back into place around the bunker edge so that it blends right up to the grass edge. Care is taken during this last process to ensure the proper depth of sand covers the bottom of the bunker. We are fortunate to have Poli and Juan to guide these tedious tasks as they are second to none in their ability to visualize the finished product from the very beginning. Their creativity in sculpting the land into a pristine playing ground and maintaining the spirit and feeling of the original bunker construction is never short of astonishing. Dan Pierson Director of Grounds

‘TIS THE SEASON - PRE-SEASON!

The season to get ready for golf and tennis is now! It is also the best time to prepare the kids for the rigors of the upcoming spring sports season! Pre-season by definition is the 8-12 weeks prior to the start of the competition season. It is the time for all athletes to take their hard work gained in the gym in the offseason and start to transition their strength gains into strength- speed (strength expressed quickly) and power (explosive movements) exercises that address the movements of your sport. Even if you didn’t get as much time in the gym as you wanted since it got cold out, there’s still time to improve your fitness. Since tennis and golf are such powerful rotational sports we are trying to reduce your risk of back problems this coming season by giving you fitness advice to be prepared for the upcoming season. • You do not need to be exceptionally strong, but you do need to control your movements with enough strength. •You need the requisite range of motion about your shoulders, hips, and other joints to swing within your body structure efficiently. •You still need a cardiovascular base, but your training should also include High-Intensity- Interval-Training, to help increase aerobic endurance AND aerobic power. • You need to also consider the muscles on the opposite side of your body (golf is practically all one-side dominant). All muscle groups and both sides of your body need to be trained. • You should examine the movement patterns of your sport to help prescribe in which direction(s) you should focus. For example, several studies indicate that tennis is up to 70% lateral movement. If you have a movement deficiency it will be revealed on the course or the court. Correct it now! Now is the perfect time to take advantage of preseason training for your golf, tennis, or fitness program! Please call the Fitness Desk X2113 for more information or if you would like us to help you with program design in a personal training, group training, or workshop setting. Here are some fundamental sports fitness items that should be addressed:
