A Winding Path to the Law I May Have Wanted to Be a TV Litigator, But What I Became Was Much More Rewarding

There aren’t many areas of the law in which you get the chance to affect a person’s day-to-day existence. But when you’re dealing with families, you’re helping a child grow up in a stable environment, or securing support payments from a deadbeat spouse — things that directly influence the well-being of the people you’re serving. I have to admit, being a lawyer wasn’t always my plan, but it’s proven to be an incredibly

After graduating, I decided to pursue that other pervasive TV trope: the courtroom lawyer. I headed to law school devoid of any notion of which type of law to practice, other than that it had to include time spent giving emphatic, eloquent speeches in front of a judge. I’m obviously exaggerating here, but looking back, that’s how I see myself — utterly naive. I had no

idea how much writing would be involved in legal work, the hundreds of hours spent cranking out elaborate briefs or navigating labyrinths of paperwork. Despite going in with a mountain of misinformation, studying the law clicked with me almost immediately. I graduated and cut my teeth defending a large insurance company in Las Vegas. It was exciting and involved the in-courtroom experience I sought. My family and I moved down here to Phoenix in 2003, and I took a similar sort of job. However, with a growing family including three young kids to think about, the big firm life

rewarding path, every step of the way. I feel privileged to be a part of a profession that allows me to fight for those who need it most. As embarrassing as it is to admit, I am fairly sure my destiny was at least a little influenced by TV. When I was in the middle of my undergraduate studies, I was a double pre-med and history major. I had every intention of going to medical school and becoming the heroic, perpetually strapped-for-time physician. You know, the guy who has to make the tough

away tragically early on in our partnership — a story for another time.

Even if being a family lawyer is completely different than being an attorney on TV, it certainly doesn’t lack for drama. The people who come through our doors are often in desperate, difficult situations. Their lives have been turned upside down, and it’s our job to flip them back right-side up. Our clients entrust us with the fate of their families. They have real, tangible problems that we can work to alleviate. Nowadays, I can say with certainty that it’s a good thing I didn’t become a doctor. My job may not be any less stressful, but I can say without a doubt that I take pride in the impact we have on our clients’ daily lives. It’s why I come into work every morning.

calls in the operating room. Somewhere around my junior year, though, I began to feel fatigued by the constant barrage of chemical bonding maps and anatomy memorization, and I realized the medical field wasn’t for me.

grated on my goals. Basically, the work required way too many hours for me to live like a regular person, much less like a loving and involved father and husband. So my close friend and I struck out on our own, with this very law firm. He passed

Summer reading lists are always popular, but most families rarely have time to have dinner together, let alone sit still reading for hours. Luckily, the ever-growing popularity of audiobooks means you don’t have to wait for school to start again for your kids to get back into literature. Here are a few great audiobooks you can introduce to your family this summer.

Summer Reading for Busy Families

For the Long Road Trip “The Bad Beginning” (A Series of Unfortunate Events) by Lemony Snicket, read by Tim Curry

When a terrible fire destroys the Baudelaire mansion, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny find themselves orphans and are sent to live with the terrible Count Olaf. Convinced their awful new guardian is only after their fortune, the Baudelaires must use their intelligence and skills to stick together and (maybe) overcome their sad circumstances. Fans of the Netflix series will love to hear the story that started it all! Who knew such an unfortunate series could mean fun for the whole family?

a one of the hilarious misadventures this family must overcome together.

For Something Entirely New “The Wild Robot” by Peter Brown, read by Kate Atwater When lonely robot Roz opens her eyes for the first time, she finds she’s trapped on a wild island. Struggling to survive and befriend the island’s hostile animal inhabitants, Roz must eventually face her mysterious past, which threatens to tear her home apart. This brand-new book is a stunning tale about the environment, technology, and the wonder of being alive. These are just a few of the many titles your family can enjoy this summer. Do I Really Need a Divorce Attorney? SHORT ANSWER: YES

Nowadays, “do-it-yourself” is all the rage, and tutorials on everything from DIY home repair to DIY braces litter the internet. Some people, faced with a failing marriage, start to think that maybe they can have a DIY divorce — it’ll save a few bucks; how bad could it be? But, much like those DIY braces, your divorce is a process you should leave to the professionals.

The vast majority of do-it-yourself divorces end in disaster. There are many potential problems that you may not have considered. Courts will often take a long time with your case without a lawyer to speed it along. If you make any mistakes, you’ll need to move backward and painstakingly retrace your steps before continuing. In many instances the mistake may be very hard to change or even permanent. If you and your ex-spouse disagree

over child custody, property division, or alimony, it can be almost impossible to resolve properly without an experienced attorney who knows the law and what family court judges look for in resolving such disputes. An experienced lawyer will help demystify the complicated paperwork, negotiate key issues with you and your ex-spouse, be a vital advocate for you in regards to child custody issues, and, most importantly, present your side of the case effectively in court. Not only that, but they can assist in gaining a restraining order, aid in presenting any potential domestic abuse issues before the court, and help you expose those areas in which your ex-spouse has been dishonest. The fact is, the average American lacks the necessary intricate knowledge of local family courts. Divorce is already an emotionally taxing, complicated process. It’s best to trust an attorney who has spent years dedicated to the ins and outs of family law.

Yellowstone: Where the Wild Things Are Where the Wild Things Are

This summer, skip the expensive hustle and bustle of an overcrowded theme park. After a vacation like that, you’ll feel like you need another. As far as getaway destinations go, a great place to visit is Yellowstone National Park in my home state of Wyoming. The park actually sprawls across Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming, and gives a little more room on your vacation . More than 3 million visitors flock to its astonishing peaks, multicolored pools, and dramatic geothermal geysers each year, but as you travel across Yellowstone’s 2.2 million acres, it’s unlikely you’ll see much of them. And the sheer variety of unparalleled activities to explore means fun for the whole family. Make sure to check out Old Faithful, the most famous geothermal geyser in the world, with eruptions averaging a whopping 130 vertical feet. Or if it’s majesty and exploration you’re itching for, hike one of the many trails along the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River. The views, with clay cliff faces and tree-covered mountains in

every direction, are unlike any other. Also, be sure to investigate the Grand Prismatic Spring, which, besides its otherworldly rainbow waters, is known for being the largest hot spring in the U.S. For many, though, the biggest draw of the park is the wildlife. Yellowstone is home to the largest bison population on public land. It houses more mammals than anywhere else in the lower 48 states, 150 species of birds, and huge populations of native fish, to name a few. Just driving around

the park, you’re apt to see moose, deer, elk, mountain goats, and, if you’re lucky, grizzly bears, mountain lions, or wolves. Go boating, catch a fish, scale a mountain, ride a horse — the things to do vary as much as the breathtaking landscape. If you’re looking for an affordable, relaxed, and wide-open family vacation this summer, escape the scorching Arizona summer heat and head to Yellowstone — it’s a no-brainer.
